  • The Nature of Fishing is about the Why’s that underlie the What’s and How’s of fishing. This Video Fishing Journal demonstrates the role that heat -in particular heat gradients- plays in motivating fish to migrate and move, allowing us to predict where those fish may end up, revealing some of the very best places to cast.

    Thank you Paul for all that you do! My dad passed two years ago and I found myself falling deeply in love with fishing again as a way to connect. I quickly found out much of my fishing success was due to the wise angler with me. Your videos helped equip me not only with knowledge of bass behavior but also technique selection and locating bass.

      Hi, Jay. Sorry to hear about your dad's passing. My dad is turning 91 next week and now lives with us. He introduced me to fishing nearing 60yrs ago now; Or maybe it was the rock bass he helped me catch! :) And, thanks! What you've described is what I've geared my channel toward, making and deepening our connections with the natural world. Great to hear you are able to dive right in. It just gets better and better. Hopefully there will be more to come for my channel. For the time being I've been occupied with other more pressing priorities. Thanks again for the spot on comment. All the best, Paul

      Yeah, I miss CO. There's beauty everywhere though and I'm surrounded in it here. Oh yes, and CO can grow some big bass too. In fact, there are some right in your home town (hint). They do take some commitment though. Not bc they are so much smarter. They are mostly just rarer, even in good waters. And... generally deeper. Hope you find some. Hi, MS. Cool having M salmoides respond! :)) Yeah, heat plays such aa role in cold blooded lives. Yes, it's "variable" in behavior seen against environment. And LMB, esp, have been described as "thermally labile", meaning they can operate at a wide range of temps. They work with what they've got, and LMB are particularly good at that. Really cool critter, that keeps us fishers guessing, and the fish nerds... having to consider some pretty deep stuff around how it all works.

      Yeah, a lot of the commercial side of bass fishing here is centered around waters that can hold the most people and the big tournaments. LMB can make good livings on lotsa very different prey types. "Master of all trades" they've been called. Sure keeps us busy! Glad to hear my approach is helpful.

      And it is very interesting - i would have thought that stunted fish were a result of lack of food - but you show there is an abundance of food, so is this the result of a tight small gene pool? We ran into this in the high arctic in land locked lakes, the trout were very strange with giant heads and small bodies, locked in lakes for ......XXXXXXX years. What are your thoughts?

    • @thenatureoffishing7591
      @thenatureoffishing7591  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Rolling Up. Hope all's well with you. Paul

    • @thenatureoffishing7591
      @thenatureoffishing7591  ปีที่แล้ว

      The stunted fish are indeed due to lack of appropriate food. I didn't flesh that out well, actually removed that explanation from the VFJ to keep the talking head parts of my video in check. Depending on a few factors, bluegills can outgrow bass, getting too big for small bass to eat. Small bass are relegate to competing for insect food with hordes of mid-size sunfishes. However, all those mid-sized sunfish can feed large bass. So far, the population of larger bass in the pond is small. I could be wrong, and have yet to find them. But... I feel should have caught more of them during the spring binge if they were there. Hope I'm wrong.
      The mountain lakes you describe also tend to be very infertile, producing little food, and have such short growing seasons that trout in many of them become stunted. It's possible that some waters can select for small fish "genetically" but this is often bc of a lack of food and in mountain lakes, heat. Many if not most high mountain lakes rely on stocking, from airplanes, though as they cannot support successful reproduction.
      Hope this helps.
      Paul

And as it happens, this very morning I was fishing a large pond (55 acres) that reminds me quite a bit of B. No boats of any kind, though, so she's been slow to give up her secrets to me: but my experience is like yours: a large majority of fish under 1 lb, with several 3s and 4s, a couple of 5s and a 6, if you know where (and when) to look. My wife just retired as an elementary school teacher, and has told me there are kids that just can't sit through a documentary or other non-entertainment based stuff. Then there are those that just eat it up. Curiosity catches bass. But then, so does constant chuck-n-wind! To each their own I say.

    • @thenatureoffishing7591
      @thenatureoffishing7591  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Matthew. Interesting subject. I have little direct experience with the FL species/subspecies. There's a fair amount of research out there on it, some of it I've perused. And there's stuff there to be talked about. My interest would be wider, looking at the differences between all stocks: northerns, FL, hybrids, hatchery stocks... Someday perhaps...

    • @collector_effectors
      @collector_effectors ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thenatureoffishing7591 North Carolina DNR is doing some really interesting stuff with the F1 hybrid stocking program this year, and I think at the very least, even if you're not able to do an in-depth on the water study, it would be a fun topic for discussion because as a fisheries biologist I think you'd have a lot of interesting points on the subject. I for one don't believe that stocking F1 hybrids is going to bring largemouth back in a big way to Lake Norman or any of the other big lakes that are loaded with spotted bass. I think that in order for largemouth bass to thrive, people would need to start regularly keeping spotted bass that are caught almost like an invasive species.

    • @thenatureoffishing7591
      @thenatureoffishing7591  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dunno exactly, butF1 hybrids aren't a magic cure, esp as you move north. Spotted bass fish-n-chips sounds like a good plan. Tough to catch enough on such big water though.
