The wedge is a strange place. It is almost impossible to get caught inside because the water sucks out so hard on a big wave that is pulls you past the impact zone. It's the people who commit that get hurt.
After a closer inspection, and a more in-depth slow-motion review of the footage, many experts have agreed that the reason this surfer was not able to remain standing was mostly due to the downward pull of force caused by his humongous giant balls of steel.
At the wedge you arent slammed into the water, you are slammed into the ground. Its shallow as hell and getting sucked over the falls means your hitting the bottom with all that water on top of you. And yes it is like a washing machine. Tore a ligament in my neck once there on a giant day. Didn't even know it.
the best part is seeing him pop helpless out the backside, still clutched in the grinding hungry jaws of the suction...a glimpse at light...before going down into the belly of the monster...been watching the Wedge eat them up for 30 years. It never gets old:)
You can go too Disneyland and have a 16 year old pull the lever that sends you up to a controlled type of simulated spin cycle, or you can do it the natural way and let Neptune pull the lever. I loved the wedge, never felt more alive when riding those waves or vise versa?
@aspca226 Was that the guy paddling out? I thought it was the guy who fell who got pulled up through the back and thrown over the falls by the wave's momentum.
When Waimea breaks large not in a foot of water not really a shore break like this its larger but this breaking on the sand in from of beach goers in like a foot of water
@jerseyRJ I think it looks a lot worse than it is. It all depends on how deep the water is where you land-- or you can break bones including your neck and beck-- and whether you are in position to handle the next wave coming in, otherwise you can drown. But I've been in waves this big and they actually look scarier than they are.
@chumdinger3 You are incorrect my friend...hold down there at that size is pretty long. The wave is so heavy it beats the life out of you, which makes it seem even longer. Also, there's so much water rushing back out you end up taking the entire set on the head. That's how wiping out when it's huge there goes.
He gets that miraculous moment where he can get that big gulp of air before he descends towards oblivion...otherwise his last words would have been "Oh Sh...."
Thw wedge is so gnarly, 20 30 foot faces and every wave is a close out yet these dudes are all committed to their waves like theyre going to make it. Straight fucking gnar, nothing but respect to these guys.
I'm going to search Newport Wedge deaths and injuries to see if 0:33 made it out alive. actually he went back into lots of water depth, it's the unlucky pile driver spot, top down to sand that breaks bones.
now honestly, im from jersey and with a good storm welll get overhead swell easily but honestly what do you do in a situation like that, in all seriousness just cause my preference is waist to head high maybe a ft or 2 over but ive never been through something like that. that just looks like death to me
@Ibprius i agree, my buddy surfs there a lot when its big, he also goes to the north shore every winter. he says that the hold down is similar to that at pipe.you can be down there for a while after a massive wave crashes on top of you in a foot of water. its bad times forsure. people who havent surfed/bodyboarded there dont understand how much power is in that wave and how close you come to dying everytime you ride its mountains
shit's so intense. You might not think having to hold your breath for 10 seconds is a big deal, but try doing it after you slam into the water and are being put through the equivalent of a giant washing machine
@F3502000 Yeah Im from Hawaii and we dont have any crazy spots that are wedgy like that, just massive shorebreaks. I really want to go to the wedge and have a go at it.
you live or die, thats about it. thats why people should know their limitations before they paddle out. ive taken some serious hits and i think before i paddle out
@kylethompson4 I know thats the best part how he comes up again, i always like to think about the waves certain turbulance once it crashes, i think maybe i would want to study this when i get older a new kind of science!
When I used to body surf the Wedge I thought being tossed in the soup was more like a vigorous massage, and the longer it held me down the longer was my stay in aqua-heaven, not hell. bbbboB
get banged up pretty badly. been in waves up to 15 feet and took a fucking beating and actually couldnt walk straight for about 10 minutes after. had to sit down and gather myself. could possibly drown, could break/crack something and get a concussion.
Backwash threw me ten ft out in a 12 ft day.. Wind knocked out of me as I went over the falls. Got slammed on the bar which caused me to suck in a bunch of water. That was the last time I paddled out there. Fuck that wave.

BEAST WAVE ... Great slow-mo mooooooing on replay. Perhaps best mooing ever.
I love the kid at 0:33. he has an amazing sense of observation
0:30 you don't say.
After a closer inspection, and a more in-depth slow-motion review of the footage, many experts have agreed that the reason this surfer was not able to remain standing was mostly due to the downward pull of force caused by his humongous giant balls of steel.
Those balls is heavier than all my bodyweight together
Holy crap I can't even hold my breath that long while sitting in bed staring at the computer

"YEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!... OHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
32 seconds 'he fell off' wow man good observation, didn't even notice!
@sonofcreator1 it's actually in really shallow water so there really isn't a hold down but you get pounded by the wave into very little water
@theNVMEproject I have been out there a couple times. Not when its that huge for sure. That place is also shallow...thats a massive wipeout.
You can go too Disneyland and have a 16 year old pull the lever that sends you up to a controlled type of simulated spin cycle, or you can do it the natural way and let Neptune pull the lever. I loved the wedge, never felt more alive when riding those waves or vise versa?

Biggest shore-break in the world I think...
Mr. Aek wrong< Waimea Bay is bigger.
When Waimea breaks large not in a foot of water not really a shore break like this its larger but this breaking on the sand in from of beach goers in like a foot of water
@@allensaunders449 so true the pics don't do it justice, when seen in person it is humbling
@jerseyRJ I think it looks a lot worse than it is. Have u ever thinked of why when the wave crashes the water turns white? 0.0
Great video. Poor bastard. The best bit is the slowed down "oh".

how do you duck dive that?
I wonder that aswell 😂
The boogy boarder at the end going 'over the falls' is priceless!
He gets that miraculous moment where he can get that big gulp of air before he descends towards oblivion...otherwise his last words would have been "Oh Sh...."

man gotta give him props for dropping in
@tomnshanna that was actually the surfer u saw bail. there was no body boarder.
I'm going to search Newport Wedge deaths and injuries to see if 0:33 made it out alive. actually he went back into lots of water depth, it's the unlucky pile driver spot, top down to sand that breaks bones.

how could he survive this?
@Ibprius i agree, my buddy surfs there a lot when its big, he also goes to the north shore every winter. he says that the hold down is similar to that at pipe.you can be down there for a while after a massive wave crashes on top of you in a foot of water. its bad times forsure. people who havent surfed/bodyboarded there dont understand how much power is in that wave and how close you come to dying everytime you ride its mountains
man That has to hurt but what is he doing riding a wedge..??
That wipeout was probably more hardcore than one at jaws. He got sucked over and then went into the washer for at least a 15 second or more hold down.
@MFGProductions
pretty much, it breaks in only a couple feet of water. straight shorepound.
How did the guy in 0:33 get pulled over? Are they THAT big at The Wedge?? (Never been there so I dont know.)
0:31, that kid's a genius
What's the biggest wave at wedge
did they survive after that?
shit's so intense. You might not think having to hold your breath for 10 seconds is a big deal, but try doing it after you slam into the water and are being put through the equivalent of a giant washing machine
Also, you're usually a bit out of breath from paddling hard before catching the wave.
@F3502000 Yeah Im from Hawaii and we dont have any crazy spots that are wedgy like that, just massive shorebreaks. I really want to go to the wedge and have a go at it.
@MrOutlawaussie tht always happens if the wave is sucking u back in, but i do get ur point
Hell yeah and the panic is the worst part. I can even stand a 5 sec hold down without flipping out.
what's that move called?
is he okay?
you live or die, thats about it. thats why people should know their limitations before they paddle out. ive taken some serious hits and i think before i paddle out
Its the same guy who fell off, He got taken round underneath and then popped out the top to go round again. :P
did anyone notice the guy get sucked over the falls at 0:32 ???
why you didnt keep recording until he came out?
OHHH...I dont think I was thinking straight last night. Its happened to me before too. lol thanks!
Going over the falls at the wedge.......That last breath will help! Alot!
That's is the absolute worst feeling going over the falls. Poor guy
what happened to him after? did he died?
Sucked back over! That is a tragic pounding.
"YEEEEAAAHHHH-OAWWWWWWW" little kid in the back ground..... "Hey, he fell off!"
0:31 Oh really! He did?
0:41 is he alive? in the background
I've seen this place big before but this...unreal!!
at 0:32 thats always good when that happens on a big wave u get a chance for another breath before u go back down again
He fell off you say? Did he now?
@aspca226 that was the guy that fell
its hard to surf on backside (back is facing the wave). You cannot control your takeoff.
That what doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger. If he lived, he is one strong guy right now!
@kylethompson4
I know thats the best part how he comes up again, i always like to think about the waves certain turbulance once it crashes, i think maybe i would want to study this when i get older
a new kind of science!
31 seconds...look at the peak of the wave...dude is about to get ROLLEDD!
Those waves look hella scary.
When I used to body surf the Wedge I thought being tossed in the soup was more like a vigorous massage, and the longer it held me down the longer was my stay in aqua-heaven, not hell. bbbboB
the wedge its a nightmare such an unstable wave
6ft Hawaiian
@iluvgreenday43 thats the same guy! just getting sucked over the falls really hard
0:33 you can see the guy going over the falls, he must be thinking "shitsshitshitshit"
this video is freaking hilarious!
This looks absolutely horrifying
this wave looks like a monster!
did this guy actually end up surviving?
yes
I've taken a wipeout at this place broke my shoulder and my leg it's the sand that gets u
@bdysurf thats the dude who fell
Very good summers. Even Malibu pumped for weeks. Lots of hurricanes in 72.
this vid is epic because tha crowds slo mo voices
man newport beach is so fun to surf,
sick quality
one of my mates is a pro surfer. he told me that sometimes you get stucked for 2 minutes under water
the wedge is for bodyboarders, not kook surfers
0:30 did he? actually?
His board was never found. The wedge ate it
"Yeaaaahhhhhhhhh!!...AAWWWWW!!..." "he fell off" - LMFAO!!!
get banged up pretty badly. been in waves up to 15 feet and took a fucking beating and actually couldnt walk straight for about 10 minutes after. had to sit down and gather myself. could possibly drown, could break/crack something and get a concussion.
fake
@gaspajr a person had died there the day before i believe
Backwash threw me ten ft out in a 12 ft day.. Wind knocked out of me as I went over the falls. Got slammed on the bar which caused me to suck in a bunch of water. That was the last time I paddled out there. Fuck that wave.
0:30 is not the OHHHH... is is 0:32...lmfao did anyone else see him go over the falls?
I like the slowmo! It's like a bunch of cows cheering over this surfer dude! Go surferdude moooohh!!
my god, thats the heart of the storm.
Over the Falls we go
0:31 NOPE! He's trying to lay on the wave
0:52 the guy paddling out gets sucked over the falls.
Did anyone notice at 0:33 the guy getting takin over the falls hahaha
i think it was the surfer wasnt it hahah?
thats like triple overhead almost
clearly you don't surf if you're asking this question.
Props for going
0:33 that guy had to be thinking oh shit
kids got balls, hope he made it out to try again
