This is a disease I had never heard of until it happened to my sweet kitten; she's about 9 months old today, so probably 7 months when SHE adopted us. We had no information on her history; she happened upon us mid-September and never left the yard. Definitely slept a lot, but did have occasional active periods and had a good appetite. It had been a good 20 years since I had a cat, so I was a bit rusty on their behaviors, but I figured it was just because all cats are different. For those wondering, we did post on multiple social media pages looking for an owner and we were following with the the SPCA. Eventually, mid-October, we were able to have her spayed. For reference, prior to being spayed, she ate a total of 1 can of wet and nibbled on a good bit of dry cat food each day. After she was spayed, her appetite decreased to 1/2 can a day and barely any dry. Chalked that up to recovery after surgery. A week after she was spayed, we went out of town for a few days on a previously planned trip. Bought and set up cameras to keep an eye on her in the house, and a family member checked in on her and made sure she was ok, fed, etc. Cameras showed she was sleeping almost always, depressed maybe? And she was still eating her preferred reduced-appetite diet while we were gone. No red flags about her appetite not rebounding from pre-surgery because we figured it continued because we were out of town and she was having trouble adjusting. All of this was subtle changes and easily explained away. Within one month, she went from a feral kitten who wouldn't dare set foot in an attached garage, let alone a house, to a garage cat because it was raining and getting chilly, to an indoor cat, because even the garage was getting cold. Then she gets spayed, and then her "owners" go out of town for 4 days. Arrived home and she wanted nothing to do with us. We figured she was mad at us, or perhaps forgot us? So easy to rationalize things, it was late, and we were tired. In the morning, it was evident something was wrong. Lethargic, cold, wobbly when standing. Off to the SPCA she goes. Hearing the words, "severely anemic" with critically low hemoglobin, "jaundice", "we'll do supportive care". Prepared for the worst! After 3 nights and 4 days of IV meds and monitoring, she recovered enough to come home on Halloween. Came home with doxycycline antibiotic and prednisone tapering doses. After a week, she couldn't tolerate the antibiotic due to severe vomiting. Upon instruction from the SPCA infirmary, we discontinued it. Prednisone continues to this day [mid-November]. Today she had her check up with the SPCA. Her red blood cells are back to normal, her appetite is back to normal and she has gained a pound. She is more active than she has ever been. I was told she may relapse at any time, but if we monitor and report any symptoms, it may not get as severe. She may even need a longer prednisone taper, so we are to monitor her closely after this current dosing is complete. We have been instructed to monitor the whites of the eyes. We were also told we can check the gums and even inside the ears! As we get to know her better, we will be able to notice these subtle changes and seek veterinary attention asap. Sorry for rambling, but wanted to stress that, as the video mentions, there are such subtle changes. Not sure what her future holds, but for today, she is ok. At least I now have a reason for spoiling her...............

I just lost my 2 year old kitten to this. He was perfectly fine Tuesday. Wednesday he was lethargic. Threw up a little. Another cat threw up to that day. Thought a bad batch of cat food threw it away. I checked on him overnight. Was out with others laying like a bread loaf. Thursday am found he'd thrown up, lifeless, urine on leg. Rushed to vet. Low liver & wbc, low alburin. Vet said fri still low liver levels, not eating wanted to keep all weekend. All tests negative except bladder infection. Still had energy & moving Fri & Sat. Sat eating and pooped. This am not moving & cold. Vet did everything & he didn't make it. Was autoimmune. He tested negative for everything secondary. I'd never heard of this & been beating myself up I did something wrong. He was my baby I'm devastated. He didn't have any of these signs before this. He was a healthy naughty kitten. Had a healthy/chunky weight thought in our favor.

I just lost my beautiful 9 yr old Pomeranian 2 weeks ago to this. He was totally fine then out of nowhere he stopped eating and was very lethargic and had to rush him to emergency since it was a Sunday and my vet was closed. We had to put him down it was awful we are totally crushed and blindsighted by this. Just horrible. Thank you for this informative video.

@@mirandathetempestartist oh my goodness I’m so very sorry 😞 it’s absolutely heart wrenching I completely understand. Give yourself time and grace dealing with your grief. 13 months old is tragic the pain is immense. Stick to talking with other animal lovers who understand and can validate what you’re feeling. I found many who aren’t animal lovers do not understand that our cats, dogs etc are our beloved family members. God bless you during this time.

Thank you for this informative video. Lethargy and high heart rate were noticed in my cat. We took him to ER. He received a blood transfusion and has been on immunosuppressants (steroids) and doxycycline. I am praying he can recover. His first blood check of red blood cells went up. But it was only a first check.

Sending prayers your way and kudos to you for taking your cat promptly to the vet. Blood transfusion and steroids would immensely help. Keep him hydrated as this much blood work can cause a lot of dehydration. He will bounce back, GOD willing.

@@CatsSunhi. First check was 18%, second was 20% and 3rd stayed at 20%. He’s been on pred for 15 days. I want to be positive but I’m worried he may only have partial response. Mycoplasma came back negative. FeLV/FIV negative. They said FIP could be hidden in bone marrow but unlikely.. and/or have a bone marrow issue. Idk what to do now.
