We just set our coop and enclosure, and the ground is already dirt - since I had to level it all out first. This is clearly the stuff to get. Thank you!
I like the pelletized bedding, too. But for less than half the cost, wood mulch or wood chips work about as well and will last months instead of breaking down rapidly like the pelletized bedding. I do use the pelletized bedding in the coop, where water won't break it down so quickly
If you spray a 50 - 50 solution of white vinegar and water inside the coop it will make the water percolate into the ground faster and help neutralize any odor, too. 05/12/2021
I have been spreading out pine shavings where the chickens and ducks feed and drink. A good layer works for quite a number of days. Six dollars and some change for a big sized bag (like a bale of hay) is a great value. The rest of the run I have been pulling up weeds and spreading that out. They peck that like they are foraging. It will be a good layer to cover the dirt. Thinking of asking around if anyone wants to give me more grass.
I got washed sand for 20 bucks for a pickup truck load & put that down & then cut a drain edge ditch to stop the water running under my hens run, Problem solved, Ill probably get 2 truck loads in the spring & should give me a clean run the whole spring summer & fall. I do have a covered run but the way the grade is the water apparently flowed right under my coop into my chicken run.
Pelletized bedding is compressed saw dust and not edible...yet it looks just like pelletized chicken feed, which encourages the chickens to eat the bedding. Raise the floor of the run with deep natural bedding, by layering mulch, shavings, leaves, grass cuttings over and over until the floor is nice and deep. Maintain the deep flooring just like a compost pile. Adding/layering and use a fork to turn the flooring as often as needed.
This is only a temporary fix for some people. If your pen repeatedly gets wet and stays that way for extended periods of time, the best thing to do before putting the pellets out is to use a broadfork to breakup the compaction in the coop. Some people will roto-till it and be fine, but if compaction is deep that will not work. A broadfork can get down 10 inches and will breakup the compaction so the water has a place to go. After using the broadfork, level the ground, and then spread the horse bedding pellets. Works like magic.
Works like a charm but my chickens hated it and wouldn’t walk on it!! They refused to go in the run to go in the coop at nightfall. I couldn’t figure out why until I chased them in the dark all around the coop. I had to go get straw and cover the pellets up. Man. They are picky!
Beautiful chicken run. The ladies look very happy. Do they ever try to eat the pellets? I'm concerned mine will try to eat it since I feed them pellet food.
I live in the high desert of Southern California so I don’t have that issue because we barely get rain but I used wood chips in my chicken area which traps water when it does happen to rain and controls the odors🥰
I use a pitch for and lift them and flip them over to get fresh stuff to the top. When they are saturated with poo when you flip I just put them on compost pile and add more when needed.
Yeah fixes it for the moment once rainy season starts and it rains every single day for like an hour El turn into mud and then they'll turn into mold and then he'll get your chicken sick I don't know why so many people use this I did one time worst thing I could do it turns into mud

I've watched several videos on this subject today. You are the second person to address the issue this way. Thanks for your video.
This was very helpful. Thank you for sharing this. I’m new at keeping chickens, I have 6.
You smart man. I’m so happy I seen your video. I’ll go to tractor supply tomorrow. I just hope I don’t buy any more chicks!
😂 THATS THAT CHICKEN MATH FOR YA!🤣❤️❤️❤️❤️🐓🐓+🐓+++
An additional help- raise the soil level in the middle so the water runs off to the sides creating channels
Nice job I'm impressed it dries up very quickly with the pellets
We just set our coop and enclosure, and the ground is already dirt - since I had to level it all out first.
This is clearly the stuff to get.
Thank you!
Love your coop! I use the same pine pellets in my coop. First time I put down way too many!

Wood chips don't last once pine pellets get rid of water you can spread it last sand
Total lifechanger!
Oh man that was a lot of water!! Great idea with the pellets. We use just old hay but I've never had ours that wet, will keep this in mind for sure!!
I really needed this tip. I’m headed into town tomorrow to get some pellets. THANKS!!!!

Thanks I have to try this !
I will try that.
👍THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE GREAT TIP! I WILL DEFINITELY BE TRYING THAT ONCE I GET MY CHICKENS!!!❤❤❤
Identical to my coop , great video, greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
Thank you
I've been debating on trying these in my chicken run. Thank you for this video. I'm going to get some this weekend. 😊
howd you make out?
Preciate the advice. Now I can keep my emu safe and dry 👍🏼

Hope you don't mind me asking, but how is the sand working out for you ? Almost done building our new coop & I'm thinking about using sand also

Thanks for this! We are in NJ and neighbors are close so the smell is a no no! LoL
Thank you for watching
Great video and advice.
Do they not try and eat it? Is it ok for them if they do?
I’m with you! I love the pellets
New follower here from FB Small homesteaders, We love the Pelletized bedding TFS!

Great tips - welcome to the YT homesteaders as well as the Small YT group on fb
Great tips, thank you.
New sub from the FB group. Best of luck with your channel.
Oh man we used these too and they're a game changer for sure. Life time users from now on.
Thank you for this info Sir
Will be doing this
wow thank you so much that changed everything on my farm thank you
Use some large industrial tarps to cover your coop. It will help until you put a metal or wood roof.
That’s awesome. Thanks for the idea
Nice coop bro!!
Works like a charm but my chickens hated it and wouldn’t walk on it!! They refused to go in the run to go in the coop at nightfall. I couldn’t figure out why until I chased them in the dark all around the coop. I had to go get straw and cover the pellets up. Man. They are picky!
Just subscribed, found you from the Facebook group.
Beautiful chicken run. The ladies look very happy. Do they ever try to eat the pellets? I'm concerned mine will try to eat it since I feed them pellet food.
Have you had any problems with the hens consuming the dry pellets?
No they know the difference. You will see them pick some up and try it but spit them right back out
Thank you, Sir. I'm going to get some.
I live in the high desert of Southern California so I don’t have that issue because we barely get rain but I used wood chips in my chicken area which traps water when it does happen to rain and controls the odors🥰
Nice woods chips does work very well!
Wood based cat litter works too.
That's what I used for where my dog goes to the bathroom, but I also pick up the poop & throw it in garbage.
How often do you have to clean out the coop after using the pellets?
I use a pitch for and lift them and flip them over to get fresh stuff to the top. When they are saturated with poo when you flip I just put them on compost pile and add more when needed.
Excellent idea!
The girls seem very content. Good video. Thank you for your help. 🙋
Do you take it out after a while to clean ??
Thank you for sharing....I thought hay was the solution...but that keeps everything smelling horrible and it's still soggy...
Thank you sir...great idea!
Do you take it out to clean it ?
I used the free Wood chips from Chip Drop. Amazing results
What happens when it rains again? How often do you have to do this?
you can use wood pellets, a little cheaper .does work great .will use again.
I expect the mud oozed up through the stone, chooks kicked everywhere too
But how long does it last 🤔
Do you keep changing out the pellets?
Great content, make us more videos.
Yeah fixes it for the moment once rainy season starts and it rains every single day for like an hour El turn into mud and then they'll turn into mold and then he'll get your chicken sick I don't know why so many people use this I did one time worst thing I could do it turns into mud
Won't the chickens eat that geletized stuff and get sick or even die ?
Try using sand first to fill up the low spots.
Why don't you take our the water and cover up those holes with sand first and then put those pellets out?
I like the result. Now You probably want to cart in some fall leaves and let your chickens scatter them all over.

Thank you so much , works great 👍
I put this in my run today........the girls were trying to eat it........Is that ok?
I love the pellets but they are pricey!
They are a bit pricey!
👍🏻
love it ❤
You need a roof that will just go mouldy
Great job! 😉
👍👍👍
It helped a lot
How long does it last till you have to put more down again
Good video….
