Scott is a top notch guy for sure.
I've the same mower. Small tip: Putting it on quiet mode whenever possible really extends the battery range. It will go through some thick stuff still but will not ramp up the speed. It seems like when it ramps up and you're mulching the clippings, the clippings are forever being moved around inside the deck and drawing power down. Not allowing the motor to ramp lets tall clippings fall back to the ground.
Just FYI, it’s better for your lawn than if you mulch the clippings. It’s not carrying the grass clippings around. They do fall to the ground.
@@SpeakEasy2 this isn’t true. Considering his lawn is full of clover and other weeds all you’d be doing is spreading the weeds. Until he gets it to a stage where the weeds are under control then mulching makes more sense
@@PLGardenCare i heard that mulching creates thatch? i put in a new lawn last year and whilst it looks good. i am wondering if it needs de thatching? what are your thoughts on de thatching and how often does it need doing?
@@TaylerMade would depend on the type of grass and when you are cutting it how much is left on it. Plus other environmental conditions will determine how fast it breaks down
I can't believe his battery life was so poor tbh. My Ryobi mower does 200sqm of long grass on a single 5.0Ah 36V battery and that's collecting all the clippings not just letting them fall to the ground on a 'quiet mode'. That said I'm suspicious of the usable capacity of Makita 40V batteries - the Ryobi 5.0Ah 36V battery is twice the physical size of a Makita 5.0Ah and very hefty.

Tip for the chipper, Wheelie bins are great for capturing the chip then you can move it about quickly and put it where you want.
I think I noticed a pollen offender at 6.06 Orange flower from Lantana here is a study found Clinical and immuno-proteomic approach on Lantana camara pollen allergy-a major health hazard - and 8.44 you whacked it back. Good to see those battery lawnmowers in action wasn't sure how they would cope

I've been using 18v mower, line and hedge trimmers for a few years now. Wouldn't say no to more power but despite the claims of many they work just fine. Also agree With Jess's dad, you can't rate things a 10.
I bought a 2nd hand Victa 82V whipper snipper been using it for a year very impressed way more power than a cheap 2 stroke

We’ve been really impressed with the Makita brush cutter (so light, and one 18v battery lasts 30 mins) and the multi tool with the hedge trimmer etc. They make it much easier to maintain the 5 acres we’re on. Lovely to see you settling in. Must be amazing to have all that space after living in an apartment.

This is one of my faves. More in laws & more of you doing things that you have no idea about.
I got the DeWalt 60V chainsaw, and it's a really good saw. 9AH battery under constant use trimming , cutting logs etc makes it about 2 hours. Which is about the time I need to refill the bar oil. The bar/blade on it is thinner than more classic gas powered saws but gets the job done. Also every batter change I pop the cover off and clean up around the drive sprocket. Only downside i have is the plate around the drive sprocket is plastic and after about 12 hours of use, wood had jammed in there forcing the blade into it and cutting a grove. But replacement parts are cheap, Aksi the blade tensioner is really nice, I actually check the blade now every battery where with my older gas one I was more like, not jumped off yet. My only other issue is the anti kickback could stand to give me another inch for my hand, with gloves and everything i seem to trigger it when ever it rocks as i set it down. 5/5 would buy again

We recently moved into a newly built home in a newly built neighborhood. Lawn care is included in the monthly common fees. Our lawn never looked good. I paid a company to fertilize but it still looked horrible. I started watching The lawn Car Nut on YT. I bought a set of EGO lawn tools. Learned how to fertilize and take care of problems. I now have the nicest yard here. Watch some Lawn Care Nut vids and you will be thankful. A couple battery operated sprayers too will help. One dedicated just for weeds the other for everything else. I am the only one out of 600 homes that cuts his own lawn while still paying for it. :)

I have an acre of Blue/Rye out in the country and I'm the only house in several square miles that even waters their lawn.
This spring I'm digging trenches and installing in-ground irrigation though. No more moving sprinklers around.
I got my grass seed from Ryan Knorr.

I've got the same Makita lawnmower and the hedgetrimmer and i am realy pleased with them. 2 rows of batteries will get you easily through your garden.

Little tip when trimming hedges. Put a tarp down on the surface below. saves a shed load of tidying up. Also a bonus tip, lay several pieces of rope underneath the tarp. You can then tie wrap the whole lot and bundle in the trailer/van ;) I learned the hard way lol Hope you're enjoying your new adventure. Watched your vids from the start, keep up the good work. I’ve recently brought a Stihl battery mower and chainsaw, awesomest tools ever. We’ve got to change the mindset with battery tools. No more petrol, mixing 50/1, and the noise reduction is fantastic. We also brought a Hansa C7 chipper. This machine is NZ made and the best on the market. Really easy to use and the mulch is really handy around the fruit trees.
I was probably the first person in my neighbourhood to buy a battery mower. 6 or so years later every second house has one. The change is coming. Fuck mixing fuels and dealing with the noise and fumes.
I’m not sure what you mean about changing the mindset on battery tools. I remember my father having a lawnmower powered by a car 12v battery. It was okay but didn’t have enough power to cut grass that was slightly wet and/or long.
We’ve got a battery strimmer. The issues are much the same as the old battery lawnmower - it lacks power to cut longer grass or wet grass. With current battery technology, it seems to be fine if you’ve got the time to cut everything up to twice a week in peak growing season. If, however, you can’t cut that often or you want to tame a new area, then we’ve not found a battery powered garden tool that will cope. No doubt that it will come but, until then, we will keep the petrol machines.
Same: Father bought a blower and was given another weed-whacker... which he gave to me. Now my collection includes: Mower, chainsaw, hedge-trimmer, weed-whacker, blower. Mower had issues after 3 years of HARD abuse; bought another instantly to finish my job. Fixed the old one and gave that to bro... The spread continues.

You confirmed my decision to buy Makita lawn mower - the heavier model, not the much lighter plastic model. It looked likes a real lawn killer. Yes, we want to see more of Patrick, he's a man to be feared with a tool in his hand, and the brevity and brutal honesty of his tool reviews are to be admired. Happy New Year from the Big Island.
I bought makita mower (same one)And it definitely does a good job on my lawn. Check the blade when you get it to make sure that it’s sharp… for some odd reason mine was very dull(had factory gray paint on it).
DLM434 or DLM531 are good models
@@PLGardenCare I have the old DLM460, and thinking of upgrading to a bigger and heavy duty mower..the dlm 531 is discontiued and the DLM432? is the plastic version.

It's very simple Scott.Battery life depends solely on length and dryness of grass.I have used a 12 volt battery powered mower for last 20 years.Just mow very regularly for complete success.Brilliant piece of kit you have there with 40 volts.
Mowers are still 36v but your right around the dryness and length of the grass effecting run time though more so with Scott’s unit will be the self propelled motor

A little tip. The highest setting will keep your grass the greenest. But you have to mow it more. Thats the caveat, it helps it withstand the sun though.
Also for allergies you two should try and find a local bee farmer and use the honey frequently. Can really help with allergies (it helps me)

I remember when I bought my first House, we spent 3 weekend's cutting back all the overgrown bushes and one annoying tree . Also I like Jess's Dad, bring him back for more product reviews and commentary, a true wordsmith.

If you mow high and take care of the initial mass of weeds your grass will look tidy but also block light from getting the new weeds trying to get established 👌 I do mine on second to highest setting on an AEG mower
I used to have the smallest of the Makita lawn mowers and tackled quite a sizeable communal area before we moved a couple years ago.
It's lightweight and easy to navigate. My wife can use it.
I also have a petrol Honda that obviously is loads more powerful but is also way heavier and I only keep it for nostalgic reasons really.
It used to be unthinkable to be able to do your garden with a battery powered tool. Nowadays, it's just way more practical. Nice weather over there! Enjoy yourselves!

I used a plug-in mower for years and finally upgraded to that Makita one, it's amazing.
That hedge trimmer brought back a memory from 1978 I was working for a small town and they had just hired a new fellow and they put him on the parks crew. First day, first job, trimming a hedge. Less than 1 hour into his first shift and he is on his way to hospital with a partially severed thumb. Keep hands on the handles!!! They rescued the thumb and he eventually managed to retire a few years back as a foreman. Also of note mid winter here in Canada and I just got in from shoveling almost a meter of snow out of the drive.
I bought those same loppers, totally fell apart! was very pleased once I replaced with nicer ones
We switched to Makita battery mower and weedeater a while back its very very good so easy that you mow more often thus easier when you do mow. I suspect if you mow weekly you can do the whole lawn on 2 batteries. and all in less than an hour so its an after work job rather than weekend chore. Just got a hedge trimmer too, that one, only used it once but WOW its as good as my old corded one but so much safer without a cord. I think its also cheap gear for what it is. Also its easy to operate and light for women and kids to do some of these chores gone are the days where half the job was servicing and starting the mower before you even start.
Best purchase though was a cage trailer we and all our neighbors take regular trips to the transfer station with that.
I might not know carpentry but I do know landscaping. Make sure you age that mulch before throwing it around the garden bed as it leeches nitrogen from the soil and can turn it pretty acidic. Cheers for the video scotty🤙

@@dressjess I usually just make a pile on a tarp and let it sit in the sun for roughly two months minimum that said I’ve known guys who leave it up too a year
If you need to take all the bushes to a tip ,go to Green waste to Zero on 18 Cargill Place, Richmond - Nelson, NZ, they are FAR cheaper than the tip
Battery powered garden equipment has come along way. My grandparents love them due to the fact you don’t have to mix fuels or use a pull cord to start. I’m currently waiting for Milwaukee to get of their butt and make a mower so I can finally be fully electric.
We have a corded mower which is great for us because its light and the cord is able to reach the end of the garden (just) but batteries would save alot of energy knowing where the cord is. BUT my fiance would be very annoyed if the batteries were not fully charged or if they ran out part way through and having 4 6ah batteries for a mower is expensive. The bosch mower (secondhand) cost us about £25

i like battery powered mowers, hedgers, line trimmers etc for some applications but they can't quite cope with really overgrown yards yet. that's not always important for a homeowner if you keep on top of the yard but as a professional gardener it can be a limitation. i think the next generation of them are going to be really excellent

If you are open to a bit of allergy advice, I am pretty sensitive during allergy season by me on Long Island, New York. What works wonders for me is having a teaspoon of local honey from a local farm stand. Emphasis on local honey. It works wonders having a spoon a day. Even in a cup of tea. Congrats again on the move. Keep up the good work

I did chuckle when Jess said "You might need to redo this part" and then later when dad was asked what mark he would give the hedge trimmer he said ten, and when he was queried as to why not ten, he said "I can't rate anything 10 out of 10". Seems Jess may have inherited that gene. :-) Really enjoying you two making a new life in Nelson. My wife and I left Auckland for Havelock North 36 years ago and we have not regretted that move. My parents ended up following us 10 years later.

December 27th in the Vancouver BC suburbs we got down to -14C. Today during the day it was 2 to 4C and about 0C at about 9pm.
It can be hard for people outside NZ to appreciate just how bad the summer sun can get in terms of UV exposure. Some years ago I was visiting a friend in Arizona and before a several hour desert hike he gave me some SPF30 to put on. I asked "what is this, an undercoat or something?" but apparently it was all you needed.

Same experience here with my battery lawn mower and hedge trimmer. I was a bit scared at first that I wouldn't be able to charge my batteries fast enough while working, but that was not needed. Batteries (18V, 5 Ah and 6 Ah) don't even have to be fully charged and I am still more than fine.
Batteries are excellent we can run a full day of lawns with these no problems

Wow, I didn't think the video about gardening was happening so fast. Thanks to makita for showing the items, I wish they can send you the smallest chainsaw which is extremely useful for day to day pruning and maybe the multi tool with wtih grass trimmer head and pruner!
