Great review! Based on some other review videos I was thinking of getting this game. However some of the folks in my group (especially me) are prone to analysis paralysis. And most of my group will lose interest if we can't keep things moving. So, I'm able to remove this from my ever-growing wish list. Thanks for the review- keep 'em coming!
Thanks for putting together such a great review. I'm glad that you hit on the amount of time and brainpower it takes to play; I've been specifically looking for a lighter game that I can play with my younger daughter and believe this would be too much for the both of us.
Another great review! I really enjoy your format and production quality. I think you could benefit from a light pastel (or burgundy?) color in the background for some contrast / "pop" (maybe some fabric + wall tacks?). You're one of my favorite reviewers. Keep it up! Luckily, our group doesn't experience your neutral observations that much. As it is, faction cards are disproportionately powerful and common cards feel underrepresented; a balance would be nice. SIDENOTE: I'd love to see your top 100.
Christopher Linkhart The white table and white walls have definitely been on my mind. My table is so reflective it makes positioning the filming lights hard too, maybe I need a nice even colored table cloth. Thanks for praise, i'm glad you've enjoyed my opinions :)
Thanks for the great review Jon, I flagged it as 'try before buy' due to your comments and was actually disappointed once I got a chance to play it. Like you said, the decision trees become utterly sprawling later on and I ended up taking the Five Tribes go-with-the-gut approach to keep the game length reasonable. I had hoped this would be a meaty-but-manageable game to play with my SO, but despite how attractive the game looks I know she wouldn't enjoy the extent of options the game throws at you. As Romans I also found the vast majority of buildings were really generic (get X, spend X to get Y) although maybe the other factions are different. Not a bad game by any means, but not one I'll be getting.
thank you for taking the time to explain how this game works. i subbed. this made more sense than portal's videos. im excited to give this game a go on solo.
Interesting player count analysis. I've only played twice and they were w/ 3 and 5(! w/ Atlanteans) players. I'd like to try the 2-player set up. I personally didn't think 3 players was that bad. Even w/ 5 players, it took us maybe 1.5 hours to complete. At some point, I need to try the solo play.
I've only played it 2-player once, but I was concerned that luck can be too powerful in that game. If you get your super cards out early and first, you pretty much win the game. This is because punching back-and-forth is much more heavy in a 2-player game; in a 3-player game, sure you could target a player, but that also ends up helping the third player as well. In a 2-player game you can just go for the smack-down without really any repercussions.
