Personally I think enemies to lovers only really works well in fantasy/scifi /dystopia/ non reality basically… cause it’s writhing the realms of possibility to be enemies but not in a totally toxic way. Reality based enemies to lovers is so often toxic and/or abuse it’s just like … they should not be together??? Rivals to lovers on the other hand, 100% works!

It’s hard to find good enough reasons to hate each other nowadays. Makes more sense when it’s rival kingdoms, rival species, that kind of thing. But human /human? Can’t find a good plot to justify the initial “hate”, that’s why I avoid enemies to lovers books 🫤

Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder is a great enemies to lovers fantasy boo. I was so obsessed with it when I was in high school. I feel like Poison Study is the main book of hers that everyone talks about, but Touch of Power was my favourite. I think you'd like it, it's very action packed with such a great cast of characters, and the romance so very slow burn.

My favorite genre tooo!! I was actually presently surprised by Songbirds and Snakes too. It ended up being so much better than I thought it would be.

they're not enemies very long it's enemies to friends to lovers Graceling by Kristin Cashore. Also Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young ( vikings inspired universe, a girl warrior is kidnapped by opposite side of a feud between two tribes ) but I don't remember much about it, also Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh I think ( Japanese inspired world, don't remember much from this one either but it's a duology and it's pretty good i think i gave it like three or four stars ). Hope you enjoy reading these !

I am very glad you were able to love the ballad of songbirds and snakes but to me it was a huge disappointment. I was very excited for the villain origin story and I thought the romance plot just didn't make any sense and it was just a very toxic possessive situation confused with love 😢
It def was a mixed bag!!
Please please please read Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto, it is a secret identity friends to lovers and also a lgbt rivals to lovers romance, but it is very character and plot driven, the romance is a tiny subplot that is a big slow burn, like takes 600pgs before they in denial abt their love is such an amazing ya fantasy book!
