about half a month before his injury, Jamal was top 5 in the nba's dpoy race, not only was he an elite post defender for his size and position, when he closed out on 3 point shooters from within 16 feet, they shot on average 10% worse than expected. and he was averaging something like 6.8 close outs a game
Saying the Nuggets are bad on defense is such an old ass and outdated take. They were bad at the start of the season when Jamal and MPJ were still in and out of the lineup, plus they were figuring out how to integrate their new players at the same time. They've only been healthy the last 20 games or so, and in that time they have played like a top 5 defense and are among the best defense when it comes to clutch time.
Their offense is not even at 100% yet... If you watched them recently, You gonna notice that even other players like Gordon and Murray are starting to make passes... And of course MPJ and Murray are not 100% also... A 100% Murray and MPJ + Playoff Jokic 30/10/5 + Aaron Gordon... Good Luck defending that offense bro....

It's not just points allowed that matters, it's points allowed per 100 possessions as well (or, defensive efficiency that is so often discussed in other words). Points per 100 normalizes for pace which makes it better. Anyway. The Nuggets since December 7 are top 6 in that metric too which is important, and so have risen from 28th in defensive efficiency to close to 15th recently.
Since December 7th the Nuggets have a top 6 defense. That's more than half the year at this point. Of course, yes - the Nuggets are still the team that had the bad defense of the first 20ish games. But they're also this team with a top 10 defense too. As the year progresses, we'll see where they finish up. Given that they had a lot of road games to start and a lot of new faces, it seems likely that they'll finish closer to top 10 than bottom 10. (they also had some bad luck in the first 20ish games with teams shooting higher percentages than expected from 3 and midrange)
I also think that with the scoring outbursts this season offense is going to be more valuable in the playoffs than ever before. You still need a great or at least above average defense to win it all but being the #1 offense is going to go a long way in today’s NBA
Lack of cohesion is also why the Nuggets defense struggled to start the year - had a bunch of new rotation players and players coming back from injuries, as well as a schedule with 13 of the first 19 games on the road (they only just this week finally have played more home games than road games). It's hard to work out defensive issues on the road because communication is extremely important, and new guys need that to build cohesion and familiarity with the scheme and their new teammates. It's not a coincidence that as the year has progressed, chemistry has grown, and they've had more home games so the defense has improved as well.
They just need a Javale McGee style back up centre. Someone defensive minded but can be a good vertical threat that can form a good report with Bones off the bench.
