These pictures were taken in Reykjavik and surrounding areas on 7-9 July, 1926. Mr. Burton Holmes and his assistant Franklin Lavarre were among the passangers of SS Carinthia which made a call at the port of Reykjavik during a sub-Arctic cruise subsequiently taking them to Hammerfest and Nordkap in Norway. I was in Iceland on holidays last month. Loved it. Loved Reykjavik and the Golden Circle Route. Wonderful country, friendly people. I even had one of those Bonus supermarkets near my hotel. Lots of strange and cool stuff there.
It's funny that the Icelandic HORSE was called a pony in this video when it is actually... a HORSE

Kar W. I was thinking the same thing myself--but, of course, that would be true of any documentary footage from 1926. In any case, I find it fascinating to see past images of this country I like so much.
Kar W. Perhaps one or two of these young kids could be in deep old age today but it's difficult.
I am sure someone who was a child back in those days is still alive and is able to see this.

Iceland alone has bin one of the biggest contributors to research of European history. They were also the first Europeans to discover America 500 years before Kolombus. Fun fact the elf language in Lord of the Rings is based on the Icelandic language and runes.
There's also the staggering advancements the vikings made in technology in Scandinavia. The viking boats alone were considered a masterpeace.

@13craj There are more places on the northern hemisphere than Alaska, but the song the Land of the midnight sun refers to Iceland. But Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and parts of Russia all have midnight sun during the summers due to their placement on the globe.
At 1:45, after the text about tourists--that's in front of the culture house (Safnahúsið). You can just barely see the statue in the park of Ingolfur Arnarson!

This was a special occasion so people allowed their kids to stay up late, foreign digintaries being something of a novely a tthe time, but it is only a small part of the film, but if you go to modern Iceland during the summer weekends you would be surprised ....
Very nice! Does anyone know the occasion in the beginning of the reel where everyone's dressed up and parading? Maybe we could establish a narrower timeline than just "the twenties". :)

Brilliant! I purchased a film (not quite as interesting) of a similar date of a ship landing at Heimaey and then Reykjavík a few years back which I had transferred to DVD and then donated the original to the Icelandic Film Archive. I must get around to uploading it!
there is no 24 hours sun in reykjavik. because iceland is south of the polar circle. norway ist the land of midnightsun. the sun is gone for a liitle bit more than 3 hours in reykjavik,in the summer. only the icelandic island grimsey is north of the polar circle....
@MiaMountainLover They may be strong but they are still rather small and therefore are called the "Icelandic pony". That's the formal name. Read about it in wikipedia.
It's not an insul to call it a pony, it's just a name.

People who call my horses "ponies" are in for a long lecture, but the no-word-for-pony issue was something I heard recently and needed to check. So thanks again :)

Just a slight correction to your title, "travelfilmarchive": Reykjavik was/is the *capital" Iceland--not the "capitol." :)
It is because in the summertime Reykjavik has 24 hour sunlight, it is the land of the midnight sun.

The icelandic HORSE is a horse because it has the bone structure of a horse, not a pony, there is a physical difference which classifies him as a horse, Wikipedia isn't always right.

@MiaMountainLover Yes they are indeed strong, but they still are ponies. Only us Icelanders call them horses but internationally they are ponies. Small, but very strong. Nothing to be ashamed about that.

I thought this might be the reason, rugreb83, but there's still something wrong. Look at all those people, especially children. If it's midnight shouldn't they be sleeping in their beds? Everybody seems to be performing daytime activities: people walk the streets, drive cars, ride bicycles and horse-ride. Quite odd for the middle of the night even if it's a bright night. I'd rather expect the city to be less crowded at midnight.
@Markohoppis Finland is not often considered as a part of scandinavia (just some times because some parts of Finland was once owned by Sweden.) and iceland (once owned by Norway) almost never considered a part of scandinavia but the faroe islands (færø øyene still owned by Denmark) are quite often considered a part of Scandinavia. you still know way to little about Scandinavia to talk about it like this.

Wow, i have to say this is really mindfucking, i live in reykjavik myself.
I've always been told they're horses because Icelandic has no word for pony and people kind of stuck with that. Of course I could be wrong, my grasp of Icelandic is extremely little haha :)

Times when people appreciated little good things in life and didn't whine for small things, like people do now. Back then, people worked hard and grew to a tough people. Reykjavík is two words put together. reykja and vík and vík means creek and not bay. Bay in icelandic is flói. And RVK is correct.
