  • This video is about HEQ5 Pro Refurbish. (I noticed near the end of the video the Dec belt was a little loose so I have tightened it to remove slack. Otherwise it will exhibit backlash.)
You can find an HEQ5 dismantling guide here: www.astro-baby....
This is the belt drive upgrade kit: www.rowanastron...

Very good and thoughtful report, thanks so much. Was about to remark on the loose DEC belt but that's covered indeed. Well done, nice home-tuning!

Thanks but I would have loved to see how you adjust the various bearings and the worm... There are already too many videos of people showing and slewing their belt modifiicaton on TH-cam.

Hi Tempus Fugit, yes I did a video for that here: th-cam.com/video/DhrcXtsJy8c/w-d-xo.html

Great video and nice closeups! I have a Orion EQ-G and recently started PHD2 guiding. My DEC backlash measured at 4169 ms. Just curious if you had any values for your mount (or your friends) before and after adjusting the gear mesh and/or before and after the belt kit install. I'm not big on tearing down my mount but would really like to get better guiding performance. What is a reasonable DEC backlash value for this mount? I don't know if I should be hoping/striving to see 10 ms, 100 ms, or 1,000 ms at this point? I do know from the PHD2 help information that anything over 3,000 ms is too much.

Sorry, no values, but later video show guiding very well on DEC - RA drift due to PE I think

Interesting to see inside these expensive heads 👍
Are the taper roller bearings on the RA axis?
Did not see if worms are on plain bearings?

    • @astrobuddy7895

yes, the bottom side of the RA is a taper bearing and the worm bearings are simple BB bearings.

What did you use for the bearing re-grease (the sealed bearings that you unsealed and stripped from old grease) and did it actually work for you?

Sorry for the delay, I was logged out for a while. I use automotive degreaser that was supposedly biodegradable. Worked very well. I re-greased with high temperature range lithium grease. Worked very well too.

@@astrobuddy7895 Thanks. I did the DEC and used an ABS safe break cleaner (not healthy) that dissolved anything I could throw at it and used SuperLube grease (food grade). It worked very well. End result is extremely smooth DEC. I don't have solid results yet but I can clearly hear, feel and see difference in movement.

Hi Astro buddy, I'm just putting my mount back togther after doing what you did. I have two red washers but only seem to see where one came from on astro babys guide, any ideas at all? Many thanks

Daniel Mills hi Daniel. My memory is pretty foggy now but if you look at the spread of parts in my video, you can see at least one red washer on a bearing near the tapered bearing. The other I’m not sure but they are used to offset the housing that presses agains the inside ring of the bearing. When you put it back together, make sure the two halves of the housing don’t rub. If they do it’s because the red washer is supposed to provide clearance there. Hope this helps - cheers!

Daniel Mills same position, other axis is all I can think of - I don’t have the mount anymore, so I can’t check - sold it to a happy customer. Good luck!
