You really captured the magic. My wife and I took a gamble buying an old house with wooded acreage before we managed to sell our home at the time (housing crash of 2008). Luckily our house finally sold. I’m not a gambler, but I’m sure glad we did it. A walk in the woods is magical medicine. Even better when you’re it’s caretaker. I use that term loosely.

We also bought our slice of heaven before our house sold. We had two years of headache with renting it out and having it on the market. That's all history now, though. Now we are just glad to be where we are.

My favorite native trees: dogwood, redbud, sycamore, black walnut

I've also noticed a few very old, gnarly oak trees in Western Hills recently, and they are absolutely enchanting.

that was a beautiful walk, and as always, very informative. I do like a light snowfall in the woods. It also makes it really easy to spot the invasive barberry, and with the ground soft, makes it easy to pull :)

Pulling barberry! You must have good gloves!

@@TheWoodlandSteward double gloves for the older ones, single gloves for the young 'uns if you grab them by the base . (Having said that I just moments ago removed a barberry thorn splinter from my finger that wasn't looking too good :) )

The first two you mentioned are my favorites for finding caterpillars...Spicebush Swallowtails on Spicebushes and Red-spotted Purples & Promethea on Black Cherry (and occasionally Tiger Swallowtails).

I have yet to find a Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar, but we have lots of Spicebush and Sassafras, so that is my new goal for this summer!

@@TheWoodlandSteward when I find them on Sassafras it's mostly on young seedlings that sprout up everywhere. Good luck!

Jim - thanks for the walk in the woods. I think another snow event is headed your way later this week. I am also reminded of a Robert Frost poem, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" that was set to music by Randall Thompson. I always enjoy your videos.

You don’t HAVE to let your black cherries fade away thru succession. You can be their benefactor, like the natives were!

I really appreciate the videos you produce. A couple of points: 1.) Beech trees are like weeds on my farm. Although they're a domestic species, they are not desirable next to a black walnut, or other high value tree. Removing them is like emptying an ocean with a tea spoon. 2.) The grape vines are undesirable because they can deform a high value tree. On a side note: Did your forest receive any damage from the December 2021 tornados? I'm in Southern Indiana, and found a lot of trees that were girdled in the last 3 years ago came down from high winds produced from that weather system. A friend of mine and I found mail and other paper items blown in from Western Kentucky, as far as 125 miles away. Thanks again for the informative videos.

I can appreciate that Beech trees can compete with cash-crop trees. I like beeches and am not as concerned about maximizing the high-value trees. With that said, I have cut the grapes out of the high-value trees, but left them to grow up the Sycamores, Hackberries, and other less valuable trees. We have a lot of standing dead Ashes that are starting to fall, so the winds in December quickened that process, but no serious damage.
