    Guys, after winning the GG for best comedy pic, and getting 11 BAFTA and Oscar noms (2nd only to Oppenheimer) it’s time to put Poor Things in the #2 slot.

    How many members of the Academy are in the director’s branch that nominated the directors? They seem to not like to nominate blockbuster directors with Joseph Kosinski getting snubbed last year despite the DGA nom, and Denis Villeneuve the year before despite the DGA nom. Also no James Cameron last year for the highest grossing movie.

    I really do not understand these cries of bs from punters and ‘critics’ alike. Tome the word ‘ implies a wilful, intentional, artificial omission. There are just under 11k voting members in theAcademy. To be wilfully, intentionally, artificially denied a om by under1k people?? Wow. They must reaydislike the candidates.

    The idea that Barbie is owed best director and actress just bc it made a billion dollars is laughable. Celine Song was more worthy of the 5th spot than Greta Gerwig. I always thought of Barbie as a formidable player, but not a serious contender to actually win

      i mean it’s still my #1 at this point for Best Pic. I still wanna see what PGA, SAG, and Bafta does tho… like I can see Poor Things or Anatomy of a Fall winning maybe even Holdovers just based on their strong presence and that they’ve all been slowly gaining momentum within the last couple of weeks at the right timing. Oppenheimer could be peaking too early like we’ve seen before or it could just juggernaut and sweep. We’ll see, i’m just saying keep ur eyes peeled.

    The discussion of the directing nominations was patchy. As usual, Daniel makes very strong points - I think it's highly likely that (unfortunately) a lot of people thought, "I must have a woman in my five", and given the observable preferences of this branch some will have settled on Triet over Gerwig. But, beyond that, "Barbie" is not the sort of film that makes the cut with this branch, rightly or wrongly. The only film in recent memory I can comp to Barbie that made it in for directing (even with a DGA snub) was "Joker". And "Joker" was led by a best actor frontrunner, which probably created a halo effect. Long story short, I think the principal reason why Greta missed was due to the tastes and preferences of this branch more-so than anything else. Thus Marcus', "if she were Greg Gerwig, would she have made it in," is pithy but misses the mark.

    • @gule55
      @gule55 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      But Joker won the Golden Lion in Venice, and that film has a lot of influence of Scorcesse filmography, it has more appealing for "highbrow" directors. Barbie is seeing more as a comercial movie.

    • @saurabhvashist4051
      @saurabhvashist4051 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think in the case of Triet's film, her speech at Cannes criticizing Macron and the government's attitude towards protests led to the Minister of Culture in Macron's government attacking her and calling her out over the fact that her film was funded partially through a state funded model and yet she was critiquing the government. The committee itself has government appointed members such as the National Film Board president. It seems many French industry producers and insiders were turned off by her political views.
