      @@dklee.01No you don't, you need to buy food, clothes, gas for your car, rent, you make it sound so trivial when our whole way of life is at stake. Don't laugh, it is true! China is destroying our economy with their crap, you may be to young to understand that, but it doesn't make any less true.
      They want to control our country, and they will kill as many of us as they can to get it! Please look at some of what they are talking about on the news. If they're allowed to cover it. Some of our own representatives are working against us with China. They have given Biden and his son and others in our government millions to betray their own people and country! Don't help them by using companies from China.
      Do you still need that $4.00 pillow?
      Learn to sew, you could redo your entire room, It isn't hard.

    "Someone pays the price when you do things like this"
    List of reasons why these items are unreasonably cheap from the end of the video:
    - Not paying people
    - Sketchy shortcuts
    - Contaminating water
    - Extracting goods (especially from disadvantaged communities)
    - Breaking regulations
    - Stealing & copying

    • @Mczzin
      @Mczzin ปีที่แล้ว +23

      That's so naive. The problem is not wether you buy it or not. These things are THAT cheap because of all the things you listed, yeah. But those things if not sold in Temu, they're going to be sold somewhere else like Target, Walgreens etc, but with a HUGE mark up. So, the final outsome would be: you still bought such item, but payed more for it and the producer will keep it's production practices and the intermediary will make a profit of it. Temu, or you buying from it, is not the problem, the problem is that the country were these things are produced allows its industries to operate under non-ethical practices and that's a much bigger problem to solve, thay will not be solved by you not buying from Temu.

    • @kelly55
      @kelly55 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@Mczzin I guess you didn't really watch the video then, since I literally just typed out what Shelby listed. The video (and thus my comment) does not argue that not buying from Temu will solve anything. And when it comes to a situation where you really need a specific item from the same manufacturer which happens to be sold at Temu at a lower price there's probably none or very little difference in environmental cost.
      However, the main reason why shopping at Temu should be discouraged is that the majority of these items are things no one really needs (tiny plastic hands were an example in the video) or extremely low quality (an example was a copy of a designer wedding dress). So these are purchases that otherwise might've been prevented by those American retail prices, and thus artificially low prices increase demand and supply. But I'm willing to bet you already know that that's the case. People that try to defend this kind of overconsumption in any way are often wilfully ignorant I find.
      I probably typed this whole reaction for nothing, since someone responding to people trying to do better for the environment etc. claiming "naivety" is obviously commenting in bad faith. Ah whatever, might as well post it now anyway.

    • @Mczzin
      @Mczzin ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kelly55 There's a big problem when you discourage the exchange of ideas (by saying that my comment is in bad faith or that I'm ignorant), when debate happens to be a crucial aspect of living in a society. Nevertheless, the video (and you) say that people should not buy in Temu because of consumerism and that they sell items no one really needs. However that's a very simplistic analysis. Temu sells more things than that, and again it's incorrect to say "Don't buy in Temu because of the environmenttttt 😭". In any case, the problem is superfluous shopping, and not buying items in Temu.

    • @kelly55
      @kelly55 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@Mczzin You display exactly what I said though. You started your first comment with an accusation of naivety and now again try to establish some sort of superiority by calling the point simplistic and mocking the "caring about the environment" part of this whole discourse. All the while you know that "superfluous consumption" is the problem and are deliberately not acknowledging that the video and I have both already made that the main point from the very beginning. How is that not bad faith?

      how do you judge, or know if a company is trash? Do you use an Iphone? made by same people that makes Temu products. How about a big screen tv, almost all made in China, by the same people. Should the US be required to have a label put on all products that are made with slave labor? If so, a lot of people would be very surprised. The US farmers kill chickens, ship them to China to have them butchered and packaged, then sent to US and sold cheaper than if they were butchered and packaged in the US. Do you eat chickens packaged in China (a tremendous percentage of US chickens are.).

      I've shopped from AliExpress as a clueless teenager and genuinely didn't see the problem with it or even think if there is one. I knew it's a scam company but thought that the worst they do is sell a clothing item that's so cheaply made it's a 50/50 on whether it's gonna be like the picture or not. Now, years later, after several documentaries on the state and origin of pollution and an adult view over labor, it feels like I'm yelling into empty space when trying to convince other adults they should care about this. Everyone seems to think things will just work out because some smart person will come up with an idea that saves the planet, yet do nothing to create the environment which at the very least doesn't exploit smart people. Someone else will do it, right? And then "you and I can't do anything about it" followed by absolute disregard towards me explaining how talking about it and spreading the correct information will make a dent.

      @@jessicav2031I think the main reasons shein clothing ends up in thrift stores is
      1. Buyers get their item and realize it's garbage so they donate it
      2. It's a novelty item or micro trend so they wear it a couple times then donate it.
      As someone who buys most of what I need from thrift stores, it's very annoying when every few items there's shitty shein clothes or an otherwise poorly made garment that you can tell was bought cheaply from Amazon. But you learn to gloss over them I guess. I'm mostly just annoyed that people keep falling for this trash.

      I purchased some items from shein, because I used to think it was kind of like Costco, in that it was like a giant warehouse where other brands were purchasing things from. But then I learned that it was not and I got sad and disgusted. I still have my items (two pairs of trousers and some cleaning items) and am repairing them and keeping them for as long as I can because I don't wanna fill up my trash bin.

      I agree. Sometimes, I see them online (I use vinted to thrift as there are not thrift shops where I live) and some clothes look soooo cute but when I see that they're from shein, I get so disappointed because I know it will be poorly made, by exploited workers, with designed probz stolen from an internet creator. I was watching a video about this shop that makes and sells fake flowers( last one left in NYC). If they sell their flowers at $1 let's say, and a competitor shop sells theirs for $.99 or $.98 that's competitive. Now if someone sells that item for $.03 that's not competitive, that's impossible to compete with. And that's what happens to small American businesses when they compete with these foreign, mostly Chinese companies. they can't compete. It hurts small business.

    I agree with everything you say Shelbizleee. My only thought is if you have limited and or minimal funds like most people around the world, places like Temu give you some way to buy items that you would never even dream of being able to afford. I know the items may not last as long or as long as genuine products, I get that, but with very little money, how else does Joe Blogs afford that pair of trainers etc. Rich and well-off people don't live in the real world like the poor, poor people have to get by somehow. I still agree with everything you say as they are exploiting people all around the world by paying peanuts to people, stealing copyrights and breaking every law with manufacture. Companies shouldn't exploit the markets with the sky-high prices they charge for even the basic things in life, they should try to level the playing fields with companies like Temu and bring prices down.

It took me a while to work out that they were showing me ‘reusable’ and ‘DISPOSABLE’ products together! The search term ‘zero waste’ yielded mostly waste baskets and rubbish bags. ‘Sustainable’ wasn’t much better.

    I’ve noticed that there are waves to consumerism. Fist there was a YesStyle wave and everything there was super cheap cute and affordable to teens. It was made poorly but that still didn’t stop people from shopping there. Now days they have raised their prices by a lot and people stopped shopping there in droves. Next, everyone moved on to Shein. Another cheap source of goods. They also began to hike up the prices once they realized they got many US consumers on their side. But then, out of nowhere comes TEMU who are selling goods at a loss and consumers are trying to quickly take advantage before the inevitable day when prices level out to realistic levels. Realistic level prices is not something the current US consumer is prepared to spend. Meanwhile, thrift stores (and I’m talking about “fancier” ones) are filled with H&M, Forever 21, and Zara which are priced higher than original retail. I don’t blame teens looking for other sources of clothes because anything that is remotely considered better quality than those fast fashion brands has long been scooped up by upsellers who are charging three times the sale price someone has paid for it. Regular thrift stores are even worse. There is less than nothing cute for anyone to buy and prices are too insane for the items with holes, armpit stains, busted zippers, torn off buttons, period blood stains, grease splatters, cockroach stains, and super offensive odors.

    Here's another way temu is screwing small businesses over. Etsy creators are getting their shops shut down because Etsy AI is screening the net, finds the stolen images on temu and shuts the etsy store down saying the items are not handmade.

    Their ads started popping up on my social media (I’m in Australia) a couple of months ago. They immediately set off my “spidey-scammer-sense.” How anyone can buy from them, surprises me - even just purely from a selfish viewpoint of not wanting to be scammed. And now knowing all this extra information… it makes me sad.

    Very clear TEMU fits the number one rule, 'if it seems too good to be true, it is'

    Thank you for talking about this!! I am so angry at these influencers and companies like Temu. I hate that people literally do not give a flying duck about anything but themselves. 😢

    Walmart also works under a similar system. They have low prices because they tell brands what price it needs to be and if a brand disagrees they will not be sold at Walmart

    You’re absolutely right. You know it’s bad when Amazon doesn’t support the products and manufacturers

    Fantastic video!!!
    No matter how many ads I get, I will never buy from there but they are so insidious, they know what I like and the amount of targeted ads I get everywhere from them is disgusting.

    ann reardon did a sponsorship with temu which left me really disappointed, especially because she brands herself as someone who cares a lot about brand reliability and product safety. really a shame.

    I definitely get why people fall for Temu. I see ads for it with cute clothes and can't believe how *cheap* it is. If I didn't already know the problems with them, I'd be tempted too. It feels so easy to spend money on things you don't really love or care about when it simply isn't much money to part with.

    The Clotheshorse podcast just did a deep dive into Temu and now you’ve released this. So excited to watch!
