Great video on the coolest W211 ever! How many kilometers have this car done? I am asking because I did EGR delete on my OM629 at 90k km, wondering if mine would look as disgusting 😅 Also interested why you decided not to do EGR delete at the same time when you deleted DPF and you did ECU tune. Increasing fueling + having EGR active = not good 🤔 There aren't much videos here related to OM629, like others have already requested, you need to more of these!😄
I realized I had missed your comment. Sorry about the late reply. Thanks alot! This car has covered roughly 210 000km. Although there are some things that can affect the rate of build-up, I'm sure yours won't be quite this bad! 🙂 About not doing the EGR delete earlier.. I sure should have. At the time, I didn't have in mind how badly it would affect the intake in the long run. About the extra fueling; the ECU was also programmed to handle the extra fuel with a reasonable amount of extra air. Hard to say if this has had an impact, but the intake becoming like this is inevitable with EGR. I will definitely make more videos in the future. Again, thanks!

Hello, you are doing a good job. Can you tell me whether the OM629 biturbo diesel is reliable? Should I continue with the OM642 diesel or should I continue with an engine prone to problems with regular maintenance, quality workmanship and original parts? Which one do you recommend? Fuel consumption is not important.
Thanks! In my experience, it is reliable. My W211 (this ML belongs to a friend of mine) has 230k km on the odometer, and I've basically just done regular maintenance. It's been with my family since new, so I have all the history on it. The EGR-system clogged up the intake quite badly with time, so that has been cleaned thoroughly once as preventative measure. The glow-plug module has failed (common problem with OM629.) And the engine mounts needs replacing more often than on the average car. Other than that, the engine has been very reliable. Some parts are quite expensive and hard to find, due to the rarity of the engine. But the common maintenance parts are readily available. It's hard to recommend one over the other without knowing your preferences. OM629 is something very different from OM642. If you want something special, more powerful, and do not care about some parts being hard to find, I'd recommend OM629. If you want an engine easier to work on, and easier to find parts for, and a very reliable engine, I'd recommend OM648 over both OM629 and OM642. But I don't think you should care too much about reliability, since as far as I know they can all be reliable. OM629 is just a pain to work on, sometimes. But it's such a lovely V8 when it's running, and I would never trade it for any of the other options.

Yes, I have Airmatic. I like it alot, it's versatile in the way it can be both comfy and stiff/sporty. If problems arise though, it can be a costy repair. The Airmatic is durable, though! This car has had one of the cushions lose air pressure once, since it was new. It was pricy!
Thank u for that nice video. But when u delete the EGR don't u have to install some tricky piece of electronics in order not to have a problem with the calculator?
@@WojciechKaczmarek-pr2db I did not solve it yet myself, but I've been investigating the problem. Relocating the sensors directly to the cylinder head won't give adequate readings either. You'll need to not block off the exhaust ports to EGR, and instead shut the EGR-valve electronically. This way, the sensor readings will be within limits.
Hello, I just did EGR plates blocking and delete from remap on my S420 CDI 2007 but I have B60 exhaust sensor errror , power limited and Check Engine light on. Can you help me with info about these 2 sensors ?
@@VladRuse Hi. The B60 sensors error seem to be hard to solve with software on E- & S-class while it works fine on ML & GL. You can program the EGR-valves to be shut constantly, and without fault, but the pressure readings from B60 needs to be adequate. My suggestion is to actually remove the blocking plates, and electronically shut off the EGR. I'll do that myself too, since I have the same problem. Just out of curiosity, what does the CEL say?

Wow lovely work 👏 And the sound is just awesome 😍 I have a tuned 535d and I recently got a GL420 love it so far, great machine. I have one issue though and I was hoping for an advice because these engines are not very common, atleast in my country. (DPF deleted) The car starts smoking white/gray when it is being idling for a while (20 mins), stops when I take off... and if I drive it on the highway for a 100km the COOLANT starts going out of the cap 🤯 Then error for adding coolant pops on the dash... but if I drive it around the city - no issues.. Can you advice what could it be? I am really hoping it's something small like the EGR cooler, not headgaskets or worst?
Thank you! All right, nice! To decide whether it's failing head gasket or EGR cooler can be a bit tricky I guess, since some of the symptoms would be similar. Unfortunately, failing head gaskets is something I've heard alot of with these engines. I can't remember having heard of the EGR cooler leaking internally. Although, leaking EGR could explain the exhaust smoke at idle but not while driving (valve opening being proportional to load, fully open at idle and thus a higher amount of coolant in the exhaust). However a leaking head gasket could probably do the same. If I have to guess - head gasket, I'm afraid. However, if it's the head gasket there is a high possibility of the engine oil and coolant mixing, so check the oil for sludge (under oil filler cap, for example).
@bkorven Thanks for the advice, it was the head gasket cracked, the right one. There were signs of an old repair and they have changed only the right one with some crappie brand. I have changed both and serviced the engine. I am so happy with it. The dpfs are deleted and it has a remap. Very quick for a 2.5ton truck 😅 I have one issue though it smokes a bit when its pressed hard and even more if it was staying at idle for some time. I am guessing the Egr valves are getting stuck..
O my God i have the same with my GL420 CDI 2007. OM629 Changed the waterpump thermostat is still blowing from the coolant box..Help me did you solve the problem???
Your 420 sound is awesome! I have a 320cdi....with back muffler delete. It has no DPF as its an 04. Still has no sound. I am about to do an EGR delete.....do you think it will help to sound like yours??..........🤔
Thank you! If you wish to achieve an interesting exhaust note, I'd advice on deleting the cat as well. Also, make sure not to just hollow out any exhaust component, as it will have a bad impact on flow and sound compared to actual straight piping. The impact on exhaust note by EGR delete is in my experience small (or negligible, even). Also, keep in mind that my car has a V8 while yours has an I6. An '04 320 CDI can sound fantastic nonetheless, but just different from what a 420 CDI sounds like. If you run straight pipe exhaust all the way from the turbo, I'm pretty sure you'd be happy with the exhaust sound!
@@martinduffy386 Forgot to mention that you might need to have the ECU-software reprogrammed for no cat (I'm not entirely sure it's needed, but just so you have that in mind in advance!) Good luck! 🙂

Hi. I used degreaser, but it also took some elbow grease to get rid of it all. Spray degreaser, let it sit a short while, brush, rinse, repeat until satisfactory result.
Did you receive any error codes with that hardware-EGR-delete? The main (and electronicly overwatched via OBD) part is still in place and I wonder if the car notices the missing EGR flow in the intake somehow. Also how did you block the other side (the round pipe)? Thank you very much in advance from a very interested GL420CDI owner 😁
Yes, I received the fault code P0401, related to insufficient EGR flow. So the car notices! The other side, as in the single pipe with the expanded end? That goes into the intake pipe before the manifold? That is the cooler for the exhaust gases from the EGR. Does not need to be blocked, since no exhaust gases enters from the other side. Or were you referring to something else? Nice to see a fellow 420 CDI-owner commenting!

Hello, i am having problems with this engine not reaching service temperature, it gets stuck at 80 degrees and wont reach 90. There are not very people with this engine in my zone, did you have this same problem ?? Thank you
Hello, I have not encountered this problem myself, and haven't heard about it being a common problem I'm afraid. However I don't suspect troubleshooting it should be any different from in general, for any other car. The first thing that comes to mind is the thermostat, but perhaps you have some history on the car that might indicate the root cause. Perhaps you can read some error code, which could help. I have a facebook-group for owners of these engines, where you can try asking the question to all members if you'd like. You are welcome to join!
The EGR-system for diesel engines is intended to lower NOx-emissions, and not particulate matters (black smoke). I don't think there's any difference now from before. I don't think the EGR-system has any significant impact on fuel consumption. I can find arguments both for and against, which might require a little closer analysis.
@@Shockload The main reason for me to delete it was as a preventative measure, to avoid build up of the thick sludge deposits inside the intake. It was pretty bad, and in the long run, that will reduce performance. Having thoroughly cleaned the intake now, it's nice knowing it will stay clean. I suppose another benefit could be slightly increased power. There are pros and cons, however.
Did you replace any gaskets when removing and cleaning the manifold? I was about to change the accelerator valve and saw my manifold was way dirtier than yours (335tkm). And when doing the egr delete do you think its enough to just jam the valves shut after having the egr coded away?
Yeah, I replaced these gaskets: - A 629 098 09 80 - A 027 997 34 48 (x2) - A 029 997 54 48 (x2) - A 016 997 52 45 - A 027 997 16 48 - A 642 188 05 80 - A 629 142 08 80 I can imagine that yours were even dirtier, at that milage. No one is spared from this, unfortunately. You actually do not need the block-off plates at all, I think. You don't need to bother with trying to somehow physically jam the valves, either. The valve position can via software be adjusted manually to be fixed shut, and then with EGR-off there will be no codes.
Exhaust back pressure sensors yes. Got ecu tuned egr and dpf off but getting faults as EBP values plausible when accelerating. Did egr delete the same way as in video and i think ecu doesn’t see changes under acceleration on ebp values so it goes limp
@@stnjkbs6062 I realized you're probably talking about the pressure sensors upstreams the EGR-valves. The tuner I went to did not solve it. Although, my friends ML420 CDI is running successfully with these blocking plates. So either there's a difference in the EGR-system between the ML and the E, or the tuner of the ML managed to do something my tuner did not. I'll investigate it when I have the time, but my last option will be to restore the exhaust pipes to the valves and then close the valves via software.
@ yep, i was thinking the same, my tuner tried multiple times, even disabling sensors but problem occurred the same without fault codes. Probably restoring exhaust flow to egr in a few days or relocating sensor
@@stnjkbs6062 That is correct. The problem seems to be connected to the pressure sensors, but to me it does not make sense. What function does these sensors have, except the monitoring of the valves themselves? Why couldn't the pressure signal be ignored?
Hey such a lovely car! Are you gonna give it a stage 3 upgrade and how is it doing with stage 2 now? And did u have races against 535/335 with ecu tunes?
Hi! Thank you! I might give it a stage 3 upgrade someday, but it's not something I have more closely planned. It's been doing super well with stage 2 for the past 10 years, but since EGR-delete I've begun to experience problems with turbo boost turning off completely. I believe some of the soot and muck from the intake valves found its way to the turbos, and are making the variable vanes in the turbo stick. This could result in too slow responses in turbo pressure, and then safe mode with no boost at all. So that's something I'm looking into right now, we'll see what it turns out to be. Back in the days I raced an E60 535D with exhaust and tune. It was quicker than my e420 cdi at the time (which only had a piggyback chiptune).
Oh no hope u get it done soon an we get some updates! Im planing to buy also an w211 but cant decide wether to be e500 (m113) or the 420cdi bc off sound that goes for the 500 and torque for the 420! So you think now with stage 2 you would smoke that 535 haha?
@@dc_dante2736 Thanks! I'll get it done, I just don't know when I'll get the opportunity and time to do so, haha. Oh I see! M113 is nice too, ofcourse. "Smoke" would probably be a slight exaggeration, but I think I'd have a good chance, haha!
When removing the pipe that goes from the intercooler to the intake manifold, did you have to loosen the intercooler or the manifold? im trying to replace the accelerator valve on my e420cdi but cant get the pipe to come off. @3:10
I loosened the intercooler, and let the manifold be. Yes, note that the pipe sits firmly to the manifold! I also had to deal with that. You'll want the manifold in place to hold back while you pull and jerk! Use penetrating oil and be persistent, haha!
Hi do you know if the OM628/9 engines suffer from the same oil cooler (metal thing under egr cooler) leak as the 642 ? I really love the sound of the om628/9 but i hate the reliability issues of the om642! I know that the om628 came out before the 642 and that they have a different V angle but they identical under the intake manifold...
I've never heard any owner of OM629 mentioning leaking oil cooler (I'm in contact with several). I've not had the problem myself either, altough I replaced the gaskets now while I was at it. Also, the OM629 and OM642 do not have the same oil cooler. They just use the same gaskets. So no, I don't think OM629 suffers from that same problem. OM629 has some well-known issues, but my impression over the years, from several owners, is that they are very reliable overall.
OM629 owner here: mine had the leaking oil cooler problem but the previous owner fixed it already. Online in the forums, you can find some more owners with that problem too but not as near as often as on OM642 engines - could be due to lower quantities of OM629 of course.
A simple way of gaining a boost in power is to straight pipe the exhaust system. DPF delete will make the biggest difference, and with optimized ECU-software you should be able to make 400hp.
@@mb056 Oh, that is unfortunate.. It is only the small circular gaskets underneath the oil cooler that usually needs replacement, right? They are not that hard to reach! I never had this problem myself, but I have renewed the seals as preventative measure.
Hola ami me a salido un fallo en mi mercedes gla 200cdi en la máquina de diagnosis es el siguiente El paso del posicionador de circulación de gases de escape (baja presión) es insuficiente Puede ser la egr tambien?
Nice. From my experience, these engines are very reliable. This car has never had any major issues over the past 14 years. Known issues with this engine that I know of are: - Engine mounts wearing out quicker than normal (not really an issue) - Glow plug control module failing (have had the problem myself) - EGR-system polluting the intake (not unique to this engine though) - Oil cooler leaking (have not had this problem myself) And about the transmission; yes, it seems to be able to withstand the torque. It's been driven with this stage of tuning for about 10 years now, and the transmission is holding up flawlessly. It seems to be quite overdimensioned from factory, and I don't know why.
Which oil do you put in that monster because i cant decide some say i should put 5w-30 some say 5w-40 and some 0w-40 so help ne out please ☠️ (have a dpf delete, and agr delete and stage soon)
I use oil with viscosity index 5w-30. Any of 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40, 5w-40 could work fine, and you probably do not need to worry too much about it. There are some benefits and drawbacks with each viscosity index. If you've got both DPF delete and EGR delete I'd recommed using quality ACEA A3/B4 (ACEA C3 for a stock one). Any brand is OK, and you may as well buy the cheapest you can find. Rather be careful not neglecting oil change intervals.
I've seen people claim they've noticed a difference in sound after EGR-delete, but I haven't been able to tell any difference. It could have a slight impact on the exhaust note.
bonjour pouvez vous m'explique comment avoir un son comme ça? suppression simplement des silencieux ? et comment supprimé la vanne egr merci magnifique bruit du v8 ...
Hey! I used google translate for your comment, so I hope I got it right. I have deleted DPF and rear mufflers, and not just the mufflers. Also, the sound is slightly louder in this clip since the variable vanes of the turbochargers are fully open. Blocking the EGR is a multi-step procedure, and difficult to fully describe in a comment. However, the EGR can be setup to be shut via software too! Thank you very much for your comment!

@@valilucy9281 Sorry about my late response. Is it the CDI? If so, I'd first of all suggest to go with straight pipes, eliminating/deleting whatever exhaust components (one at the time, if you'd like to test the sound in steps) there are that reduces sound level and flow. In other words, save money and don't bother with any after-market mufflers. If it's the petrol you should be more careful with the exhaust to make it sound nice. How many kilometers have this car done? I am asking because I did EGR delete on my OM629 at 90k km, wondering if mine would look as disgusting 😅
Also interested why you decided not to do EGR delete at the same time when you deleted DPF and you did ECU tune. Increasing fueling + having EGR active = not good 🤔
There aren't much videos here related to OM629, like others have already requested, you need to more of these!😄
I realized I had missed your comment. Sorry about the late reply. Thanks alot!
This car has covered roughly 210 000km. Although there are some things that can affect the rate of build-up, I'm sure yours won't be quite this bad! 🙂
About not doing the EGR delete earlier..

The glow-plug module has failed (common problem with OM629.)
And the engine mounts needs replacing more often than on the average car.

Thanks! I'm getting P0401, related to insufficient EGR flow. As expected, ofcourse! It's getting completely new software including EGR off next week.
Do you also have Airmatic and what is your experience with this chassis?
Yes, I have Airmatic. I like it alot, it's versatile in the way it can be both comfy and stiff/sporty. If problems arise though, it can be a costy repair. The Airmatic is durable, though! This car has had one of the cushions lose air pressure once, since it was new. It was pricy!
Thank u for that nice video. But when u delete the EGR don't u have to install some tricky piece of electronics in order not to have a problem with the calculator?
Thank you! Yes, you need to modify the ECU-software.
How did you solve the problem witch exhaust back pressure sensors b60? Have you moved them to another location?
Sounds even better! i recently picked up very similar amg rims for my w210 they fit perfect reminds me of CLK GTR. Also buying a w211 with a blown engine today, was thinking to swap a 420 cdi engine into it or just om646 evo a little upgrade from the non evo

OM629
Changed the waterpump thermostat is still blowing from the coolant box..Help me did you solve the problem???

Did you receive any error codes with that hardware-EGR-delete? The main (and electronicly overwatched via OBD) part is still in place and I wonder if the car notices the missing EGR flow in the intake somehow.
Also how did you block the other side (the round pipe)?

Yes, I received the fault code P0401, related to insufficient EGR flow. So the car notices!
The other side, as in the single pipe with the expanded end? That goes into the intake pipe before the manifold? That is the cooler for the exhaust gases from the EGR. Does not need to be blocked, since no exhaust gases enters from the other side. Or were you referring to something else?

Tjena!

Hello,
I have not encountered this problem myself, and haven't heard about it being a common problem I'm afraid.
It’s probably the thermostat
Why doesn't black smoke come out if you delete EGR, also isn't it good for fuel consumption
The EGR-system for diesel engines is intended to lower NOx-emissions, and not particulate matters (black smoke). I don't think there's any difference now from before.
I don't think the EGR-system has any significant impact on fuel consumption. I can find arguments both for and against, which might require a little closer analysis.
@@bkorven Okay what are the benefits of deleting it ?
Yeah, I replaced these gaskets:
- A 629 098 09 80
- A 027 997 34 48 (x2)
- A 029 997 54 48 (x2)
- A 016 997 52 45
- A 027 997 16 48
- A 642 188 05 80
- A 629 142 08 80
I can imagine that yours were even dirtier, at that milage. No one is spared from this, unfortunately.
You actually do not need the block-off plates at all, I think. You don't need to bother with trying to somehow physically jam the valves, either. The valve position can via software be adjusted manually to be fixed shut, and then with EGR-off there will be no codes.
Maybe you know how your tuner got around EBP problem?
@@stnjkbs6062 As in exhaust back pressure? What problem would there be about it, do you mean?
Hi got a e400 cdi wondering if it is a lot og work to make similar power as you with mine?
Hi! I summarized in my reply to your comment in the other video.

I’m guessing you removed the DPF as well?
DPF is removed since long ago.

Also been a sub since your burnout video , it's what made me find about these engines you should definitely do more videos!

Hello! I'm sorry, but I don't fully understand spanish.
im looking for e420 cdi myself and wanted to know how reliable these engines are? and can the transmission withstand the 400hp/1000nm
Nice. From my experience, these engines are very reliable. This car has never had any major issues over the past 14 years.
Known issues with this engine that I know of are:
- Engine mounts wearing out quicker than normal (not really an issue)
- Glow plug control module failing (have had the problem myself)
- EGR-system polluting the intake (not unique to this engine though)
- Oil cooler leaking (have not had this problem myself)
And about the transmission; yes, it seems to be able to withstand the torque.

@@geraldwildemann6225 That's odd. I feel like your problem might be unrelated to the EGR. What is the code?
The DTC Codes are 2654-8 and 2689-8 with autel diagnosis.
@@geraldwildemann6225 I don't manage to find any information about those fault codes at all. I suppose they are Autel-specific, but not even when looking at their list do I get any results. Anyhow; the Mercedes fault code you should be expecting by blocking off EGR should be "P0401:Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected". But that code is gone with EGR-off in ECU-software. Can you quote the DTC-description you have for those two codes?
Good lord it sounds amazing, have the same model but is E320 EVO sport packet.
Thank you! Nice, the E320 sounds great with modified exhaust.
@@bkorven Please, can you recommend me a good exhaust mod for my E320,do i do quad AMG pipe or stock dual pipe.
I'd personally start with a resonator delete, replacing it with an x-pipe.
Having quad tips or stock is just a matter of preference. I love the stock tips that come with the Sport Package, and would myself at this time probably keep them. Again; preference 😁
@@bkorven Its CDI,and yes sir i will keep the dual pipe from sport package.Thank you for the answer.
@@valilucy9281 Happy to help! Hope it works out nicely for you!
Sounds like a v8😀
Because it is? 😂🤷♂️
I guess it does sound somewhat like a V8! 😁
@@cihans4923 it.s a v6
@@td4speed I thought you were fooling around at first, but this actually is a V8 (OM629). The V6 (OM642) you're thinking of is found as 280 CDI, 300 BluteTEC and 320 CDI. So that's why it sounds like a V8! You've got good ears, though, haha!
@@td4speed no dumbo
Use E85 in diesel. It will clean the engine, it does NOT harm the engine in any way. I tryed this my self. Say you have 20 gallon diesel and a quarter of E85. Its verry littel you use....but this whole never be a problem. Once a month is Moore than enough.
Interesting. I won't be needing that anymore now that the EGR is inactive, but I'll look it up.
It is direct injection wont have any effect
Hello guys, next week I will buy a 400cdi with the om628 in it. My main question is does anybody know where I can find a good exhaust system? Want also to have a deep V8 sound like this 420😅…
another question I have is, is there any forum for crazy diesel guys like us haha?
because Im not planing to let it stock😂 and want to lern about the car itself.
Hey!
I'd say that you should be prepared for not being able to find any ready-made exhaust system for your car, since it's so rare. But having a custom-made exhaust system (preferably straight pipes 😉) made for you should not be any problems.
There are definitely several forums for diesel guys in general, that I bet are great! Otherwise, I've started a facebook-group for owners of cars with OM628 & OM629. Among other things, we help eachother out with project plans and the like. You are welcome to join, if you'd like!
Thanks for your comment!
Thank you so much for your response, Im looking forward to make a clean build because it only has 100.000km and these cars, in good condition, getting more expensive at the market at the time.
I would love to buy a straight pipe exhaust and the fact that it has no dpf is great, even if its not legal in austria but who cares haha. Im sure Kleemann do a good job, can u tell me how much u paid for the custom made exhaust?
Sure Im joining the forum on Facebook and Im thankfull that there are guys like u wich are responding.
By the way I know u getting many compliments for your car but all I want to say is ur E420 is amazing und pls keep it😂
je possède une E 400 CDI de 2005 avec 285000 kms , j'ai eu le meme problème .

Supprime les reniflards d huile et met un récupérateur d huile ton moteur sera plus propre à l admission et l echappement il va mieu respirer
Hello, I want to make the same exhaust system. Is it too loud for everyday driving?
Hello! It is definitely not too loud for everyday driving. When driving with windows up, it is hard to tell a difference from stock. No drone at all.
@@bkorven thank you i’ll do it!
@@lampkadoziemniakow7902 Nice, go for it 🙂
Hi! I have S400CDI, do you know if there is a way to turn of the EGR by ECU tuning?
Hi! I am pretty sure you can turn off EGR via ECU-software on an S400 CDI too, yes.
