My Grandad worked here from the 30s until it closed in 1970. My Dad remembered coming home from school on the day they had the disaster - 1939,. correct me if i'm wrong! (he'd have been 6), he was relieved to see that the afternoon shift had been cancelled ( Grandad was on the afternoon shift that day) what he didn't know was that Grandad had gone down as part of the rescue operation. This is a wonderful project, developing all the time; they now have trains as well.. Well worth a visit. Not only Grandad, but Great Grandad worked there. I have donated things to the museum ( Great Grandad's war service cap badge from WW1, my Dad's memoirs of an Astley childhood, I have other things that I am not quite ready to let go of just yet.) Loved this, thanks Clarky!
Absolute pleasure m8 thanks for sharing your history with us.
Alan's a star isn't he!, "do you mind being on the video, talking abit?", "oh no, do I have to prepare" for lol then proceeds to explain the whole place without even realising it... Its truly amazing how people think when they're being tested or in this case filmed they get nervous but when left to there own devices you get the best out of folk 👍
Too right brother!
Brilliant Clarky :) I wish I had seen this, so much history. My Grandad was in the army and fought at Gallipoli, he worked down the mines after the 1st world war. I have always loved historical sites but like you, became more interested the older I got. I hope one day I can return to England and see all the places I never saw when I lived there. Loved listening to Eric. It would be lovely if people like him went into schools, it would make history lessons so much more interesting. Sad to think that one day there will be no one left to tell their stories of days gone by. Much love x
I k ow right Eric is an absolute Diamond and still going strong. They don’t make them like him anymore. And I’m sure you’ll make it back one day m8.
Fascinating gonna get myself down there very soon it must be saved!! Those old guys with a wealth of knowledge and they have actually been down there. Very sad that when there gone certainly will be no more fellas who can tell you all that.
Exactly
Wow those drone shots are amazing 😲
sweet place looks great
What an interesting video. I am always fascinated with mining history. I live in a big gold mining area in Nevada, USA. You did a brilliant job filming and commenting. Thank you!
Thanks very much m8 really appreciate that!
Proper mad, I've been trying to find out more about the local mines near me - the Burnley Coal Fields, mills and weaving sheds before we lose it all. I have lots to learn, i love your enthusiasm. My granddad worked down a mine when he was a lad at Hapton Valley colliery Burnley and Bank Top in Burnley. The old boys are proper stars.
Cheers m8 and yeah they are you wont get any like that any more pal.
Seeing the industrial structures against the landscape is beautiful.
Yeah it trully is m8!
Where the guy on the dumper is driving, One of the old Lancashire boilers sits at the bottom end, I have plenty photos of that place. Wonderful to visit. My Great Uncle Arthur lived in a house just like that recreation but up in Howe Bridge near Atherton. My Great Grandad was a wire rope splicer for the pits, and my Grandad was one of the many Bevan Boys during the war. For an area that was built on Coal and Cotton, it is a tragedy that so little history survives. Thank you Brother for sharing our native heritage with the whole world. Peace, Ken
Your more than welcome m8 it is a pleasure if only Id known about the boiler. To be honest Im going to go film one of the steam fares anyway so Il get it on film yet pal cheers Kenny.
Always look forward to your work
Thank you m8 I really appreciate that this ones a little bit slower paced and more of a history lesson really as spoken by the volunteers!
The wheels on top are called a whining drum, the thing you looked at the end was brought when the old people owned the mining museum. I know this because my partner use to be a volunteer there 20 years ago. He actually helped moved that crane of the load loader. The ramp thing was suppose to a mining experience but it never took off. If you ever want to see engines in action go to Bolton steam museum or Ellenroad steam house. There’s lots of engine houses everywhere we take the kids all time. We also go to lots of steam rallies with traction engines, rollers etc should take the family it’s a great family event they have shows if you want details of places just message me on fb. Brilliant video.
Thanks m8 and yeah theres an event coming up at the museum soon im thinking of going to be honest!
Did you edit this comment nicola Im sure I saw something about not visiting Freds house?
The Urban Collective yeah I did and don’t visit his house cause the guy who owns it as made money out of him and still tries now by making items and selling them of as Fred’s. The thing you saw of Fred’s was in his back garden. Yeah go to the bank holiday open days you see all the engines running it’s amazing. We are big steam fans in this house lol 😂 no a geek or anything since I met my oh never knew it all existed to he showed me things. Great thing to discover.
@@nicolapierpoint8679 Im thinking of doing a video on Fred anyway and the way his house has ended up!
At the steam rallies we go to you can see Fred’s roller and his Land Rover he use to drive when he was stapling x
Fantastic video, well done

Went there to do a fundraiser with families vintage fairground equipment, about 30 years ago, the engine had just been stripped down, remember getting gatted on the satday night athe pub next door and throwing up outside due to being a young shandypantitus in those days lol! Ain't been back there since, good to see it doing well!

@@TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt let us know when it is if you can 👍
18/19 may i believe m8!
My father Harold Westhead worked in this mine, I used to peddle my bike from Atherton to meet him when his shift finnished
Quality Im glad you got to see the video then m8!
yeah the street in salford is on the grounds of salford uni. its called lark hill place and is a mock street that depicts a typical victorian area in salford. its inside an old building-the windows of the old building where the street is behind are blacked out so you cant see the outside from in and vice versa
Yeah, I've been loads of times m8 since i was a nipper name just slipped my mind that's all pal thanks for watching man!
Gandy Dancer's channel has several color videos from the late 1960s from the last days astley green was in operation.
Cheers m8 Il have a look!
Nice video, can you remember the name of that street in Salford that has a replica Victorian street, wouldn’t mind visiting that 👍🏻
Lark Hill Place m8 it's in the Salford Art Gallery.
@@TheUrbanCollectiveWeFilmIt nice! Thanks pal, will check that out 👍🏻
Pity I couldn't get you into our gaff before it got stripped out, it's still a bit spooky, dodgey sightings some nights but not as active now, I've been here for 4 years and shit you not there has been some bad shit man! Check the place out on utube thers plenty of footage!
I will do brother and would love to have had a mooch!
Bit late to this : them houses you went in at the beginning - are they reconstructs or were they on site from back when? I'm asking cos they seem so close to pit workings. Any shafts, lifts still open or all shuttered off now.?
Say, to accessible pit heads I think the South Yorkshire pit at Barnsley does fun a cage down to off main shaft levels, I think.
Pits are to the public and the house is a reconstruction m8!
The Urban Collective, ok thanks.
Bentley on catalogue shoot today so sparcompany the wk all the way from wynmondm
I think i get you but not quite lol!
Have u done the albion pub in atherton
No m8 but if its the one just down the road from the old Farm building we did there we did try?
Great video as always, but the interviews were the best part. Our "fore-bearers" were really something, were,'t they. Make us people today look like lazy-ass bums. lol
Yeah your not wrong brother and I totally agree m8!
