Th trees with the pink flowers are Mimosa. They’re technically invasive but, I don’t remember life without them and I’m almost 60yrs old. It just wouldn’t be summer in East Tennessee without those pink blooms. Birds and pollinators absolutely love them.
I grew up in Newburgh and I live in Evansville. That little Newburgh Subdivision you guys walked past with the brick walls is my childhood home and it warmed my heart a little bit to see that I aparently grew up right next to this discovery trail. My husband was very happy to see me get so excited for like... 20 uninterupted seconds.
11:10 when i was a kid in the 80's they used to allow you to walk out over the Lock - Dam in Newburgh. You walked on the gate that was the western exit. I'm born in 1979.
I love coming home from a long work day, getting settled, and watching your vlog ❤ It is so good to see Matt happy again and Jen happy to be back! I look forward to tomorrow's video! Stay safe 🙏♥️ p.s. Matt your clean cut beard looks sooo nice!
You both are just so cute!! I found your site after you paddled the Mississippi. Now I am catching up on your ADT. I’m living vicariously through your adventures. I had knee replacement this last February, and whereas it is great and given me mobility back, I don’t think I could walk 20+ miles a day. Oh, and the spiders would freak me out. But I do hope to do a little tent camping this fall, after the cold knocks the spiders out. Looking forward to Matt going up in the mountains.
How awesome to see you thru hiking in to my town!! I actually didn’t know that we have a trail through our neighborhood. My house is only 1 block from Tricky’s. Would have loved to buy you a coffee..❤
Funny thing, my ex girlfriend lives adjacent to that hotel. She was forced to watch a lot of FCOTMH, she adored taters, but was a little annoyed by Matt. Really sorry I missed you coming through, but was very happy to give you guys the support I was able to. It's been fun seeing you guys in very familiar territory.
You definitely have me “hooked” to do a paddle of the Ohio river next spring. Your footage really brought back a lot of fond memories of paddling( that is,except the Missouri, still experiencing PDSD about that one😂) I think you guys are going to enjoy the KATY Trail, which I’ve bicycled about a dozen times. All FLAT! ( Which you know is true expressed by a cyclist and hiker!) Have fun and stay safe!
The trees with pretty pink flowers are mimosa trees, and unfortunately they're pretty bad invasives. Pretty, but harmful. But the milkweed with a tiger swallowtail butterfly was great.
Good morning Matt and Jen! You guys did great, wow 28 miles!!! Taters Tuesday is always fun, thank you Jen 😃 Both of you stay safe and happy hiking. God bless P.S. You guys make a great couple! ❤
I am amazed that Jen can do twenty-eight miles so soon into her hike. That's a lot of miles for someone who has been hiking for a while. Great job, both of you.
Ms Taters, I am amazed with your fortitude. I work full time, and if I had to finish up a big project (school year), fly halfway across the country and then hike 28 miles I would be hospitalized! I hope you have a great summer hike.
Wow! 28 miles is awesome when you don’t have your trail legs yet! Way to go Jen! Matt your trim looks very nice. The bushy beard was hiding your weight loss. Maybe now Taters will have some pity and feed you better. 😅
28 miles !! Sleep in indeed ! roadwalking in the heat, pavement reflecting the brutal sun back...go easy its a long summer, they'll always be another mile waiting... somewhere...behind a tree,a boulder or bridge.... calling out
I'll preface this by saying I'm 63 yrs. old, and I haven't hiked a pack since I was in the military in my early 20's, but I started this past week. Jen, I absolutely feel your hip flexors and that muscle that runs from the inside of your ankle and up your lower shin. Twenty-eight miles is very impressive for somebody who says they're "out of shape."
You definitely hit the rough part of town at the late hour there. Not usually crazy bad until a bit later, though. And if you mind your own business it’s not too bad either.
Thank you Jen for all the cool info and flower and animal pics, I love your commentary. I feel so bad you have to walk that far and so fast right away with no build up. Hope your body holds up!
I don't know why TH-cam decided to start recommending me your videos other than the fact that I live in Evansville but I watched this one and the leaving Evansville one and it was both neat and weird to see someone experiencing Evansville for the first time. It also seems that you walked right by my apartment. I laughed when you said you were in the "bad part of Evansville" because that area isn't bad at all. The area you were in when it got darker was a little rougher but even that area isn't too bad. Random violent crime is very rare here. You are far more likely to be bitten by a stray dog than you are to get stabbed or shot. The vast majority of violent crime here is between people who know each other. Now if you were talking about car accidents that would be another story, people here are awful, impatient drivers.
That was just based on what some locals told us. We’re generally lacking in that sort of context when we’re moving through new areas so we just try and stay aware. Plus side we’re usually more conspicuously smelly vs getting mistaken for being any sort of conspicuously wealthy…
Prior to 9/11 there was in fact - a walkway out over one of the lock gates at the Newburgh Site - and a big area with picnic tables out on the middle platform. Great sunset site.
I can be a friend on the Katy trail/ Rockisland trail!!!! I can’t believe how fast the time is going! I hope to help/meet you in the Pleasant Hill/ Lees Summit/ Kansas City area.
Ah post 9/11 security. Out in California they duct taped over some signs that identified the California Aqueduct since apparently if potential terrorists couldn’t read the signs they wouldn’t know to poison the big ditch of water flowing south
Very nice one ! The first Taters Tuesday of the summer with flowers ,animals and a shaved annimal also. What the guy who told you about the R to R trail and the Kathy Trail didn't tell : between the two trail there is a lot of roads and Saint-Louis . Sadly the campplaces will be difficult to find . Keep it on .
Twenty eight miles! Way to gut it out Taters. You get a Tortoise Seal of Approval! (That and $5 will get you cup of Starbucks . . . if you indulged . . . which you don't . . . so give it to Matt!) Hike on (less). Tortoise
Wow Matt and Taters! Awesome day! Taters - I think you might be getting use to talking a little more on camera - can we have a Taters Thursday too?? Just any day that starts with a T 😂! Have to wait until the next video and hope your feet look better! Matt’s beard looks great - but I think the dogs still hate you!
Hey Masotaters! Do you have a "buy me a coffee" link? Im sure some of us would like to donate for those "Matt's starving moments". I hear the TH-cam superchats take 30% from you, do you have a preferred donation link we can use? Been following since Key West, Thank you for the videos, Taters is just adorable!!! Ps You should monetize your channel.
Thanks. We have a Patreon and a PayPal link on the second to last slide at the end of the video but pretty much everything but PayPal takes somewhat of a cut. And we have been monitized
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Thanks, I'm glad to hear you finally monetized (I think you were against it for awhile) however I still dont get any ads while watching your videos. I will check out the Patreon to see if I need an account in order to donate. I no longer use PayPal, sorry.
You guys make me laugh and make my day...
(Nice trim job Matt!)

Fresh cut and beard trim, ready to go clubin' in Evansville!

It's amazing you can keep up with Matt; 28 miles is quite something!
Funny thing, my ex girlfriend lives adjacent to that hotel. She was forced to watch a lot of FCOTMH, she adored taters, but was a little annoyed by Matt. In my experience a lot of ex girlfriend express annoyance at Matt. Or worse

"He's gone from offering me gummy bears to questioning my womanhood". Comedy Gold. So glad Taters was finally able to join you.

16:40 you should have gone and seen the Four Freedoms Monument while walking past it. Understand you were tired and losing daylight.
I’m from Boonville! Wished I had known, I’d had loved to buy y’all breakfast!
❤that cheerful, courageous Jen!

Look on the plus side. If we went half the speed she’d have had to spend twice as many days in the corn fields…
That's a nice trim right there.
Mimosa trees is the pretty tree you've been seeing. And Matt was correct about crawfish mounds.
Did you really just say “it’s a thing it was on the news “ 😮😅 love your videos!
tuesdays make me so cheery for some reason 🤔
The river to river trail is much like the ozarks region, I'm sure you will enjoy it.
I was born and live in Evansville Indiana.
That is so far to walk on your first week out there Jen! Ouch!

Go easy on Taters!
Taters 28 miles 👍👍Impressive for just getting back on trail. Take good care of your feet 😎✌
If you find a Donut Bank, it’s worth making a withdrawal. Spent four years in the center of E’ville. It’s a great place.
I think that tree with the pink flowers you are seeing lots of is a mimosa
It is, invasive species.
10:05 before 9/11/01 you could walk up to the railing at the edge of the chamber to see the lock. The fence was built after the fear of terrorists.
Ah post 9/11 security. Out in California they duct taped over some signs that identified the California Aqueduct since apparently if potential terrorists couldn’t read the signs they wouldn’t know to poison the big ditch of water flowing south

We have some beta on the Saint Louis crossing and at least so far all the big cities have been manageable between hotels and just keeping moving
Hey Y'all, thats a lot of miles, and giggles!

9:25 Aww, a sleeping raccon! I hope Taters didn't pet it though.

Odd times in Evensville
Day 70. Jen is a power hiker/walker.
Matt got DE HIPPY FYED!! Maybe they wont think your a druggy.
I’ve lived here in Boonville for 15 years. Never heard or seen signs of the trail, and we don’t see hikers!
Doesn’t surprise me. You have to remember the ADT only gets a few hikers a year if that
❤
Got a trailname off the 22 AT Thru-hiker?
Unfortunately if he told us I didn’t register. We were kind of booking it through a less than great neighborhood right as the sun was going down
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes ah well, unfortunate. chances would have been slim that i knew them regardless. =)
Shot of Matt road walking with a dead raccoon 😢
Mimosa trees
Wow! You lost 10 years with that barbershop trip.
Or 2.5 months / 1400 miles…
I'm sure your lack of voice had nothing to do with the fact that you become Sam Kinison when Taters shows up.
You hit the worst part of Evansville at night.

mimosa trees are becoming extinct because of disease
