- With pomp and circumstance: Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s “Te Deum” is a ceremonial hymn of praise - and the first bars of the prelude are a world-famous hit. They’ve served as the signature tune for the Eurovision since 1954. In this concert at the Concertgebouw Brugges in the year 2019, the “Te Deum” is performed by the B´Rock Orchestra on historical instruments. The vocal parts of the piece are performed by the “Vox Luminis” ensemble directed by Lionel Meunier.

The “Te Deum, H. 146” is now the best-known piece by French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704). Charpentier lived at the time of Louis XIV. and also wrote - as well as many other sacred and secular works - many different “Te Deum” compositions. A “Te Deum” is a kind of Baroque hymn of praise. It was extremely popular and usually performed at ceremonial events such as baptisms, weddings, victory celebrations or contract signings. Although Marc-Antoine Charpentier wrote around 550 pieces and was careful to bind and date all the original scores, most of his works were quickly forgotten. But not the prelude to his “Te Deum H. 146”, which has opened programs of the European Broadcasting Union, known as Eurovision, for decades - assuring the piece global fame.
The ”Te Deum” is interpreted by the Belgian B´Rock Orchestra, which specializes in Baroque music and plays on historical instruments, including timpani, lute and flauto traverso. The vocal parts are sung by the Vox Luminis Ensemble, famous for its interpretations of English, Spanish and German Baroque music for voice. Vox Luminis was founded in the year 2004 by the French musician Lionel Meunier, who sings bass in the ensemble himself. The choir appears in varying constellations according to repertoire and has won many prestigious accolades.

Fantastisch, wunderschön, Musik, die zum Leben erweckt! Tausend Dank fürs Upload, an die allen Beteiligten Musiker! 🥀🥀🥀❤
Finally a performance where les inegals and les agrements are performed appropriately and correctly.
Glory hallelujah!
Sublime, especially using ancient instruments.
Orchestra e coro gareggiano per bravura e vincono entrambi!
Each and every contributor is a maestro here. The energy off this performance is stunning, Powerful performance and a rare gem to experience. Thanks you !!
We're glad you enjoyed it 😊

Stunning performance! I loved it! Crisp Baroque rhythms, phrasing and ornamentation, on historical instruments . . . Charpentier's Te Deum deserves to be heard live more often in more places. Thank you for this outstanding performance!!
Absolutely outstanding! Thanks for publishing this recording!
Welcome! We're glad you enjoyed it
Fan-tastic! I can feel, touch, the Royal lounge, nice, luxurious! BRA-Voooo!!!
I heard the first opening theme as a my favorite radio signal music. Thank you for bringing my beautiful memories!

This has to be the liveliest presentation of this piece I've heard!🌝
Fabulous!! Thank you and congratulations. 😊🌹
Our pleasure!
Simplemente. MARAVILLOSO
Bravíssimo 👏👏👏👏👏👏
You have chosen very good tempi for this - it is, after all, a hymn of praise.
Sorry, part of the post went missing - it is, after all, a hymn of praise. Neither a funeral dirge nor a rollicking chorus from comic opera.
It’s essentially an affirmation of faith
Outstanding.
That is European Culture for you!
Absolument excellent
Herrlich; danke für Fries Stück

Superb!!

Fantastic
The lady on the horn (Fruzsina Hara) is the champ in this production!
Just because she has the prominent trumpet doesn't mean she blows the loudest.
@@normanchristie4524 Who gives a f-? She PLAYS the best!
! He aquí .!
FELICITACIONES A TOD@S.!.

Douze points ! 😉
Splendid performance! Enjoyed it a lot ❤

belisima
That’s how it should be played WOW
Delightful.

Marc Antoine is the man!
👍
Fully agree, but to my opnion this performance is certainly not a tribute to " the man". The most uninspired and "dead" version of this magnificent piece to be found on youtube... But of course that's just my opinion.
TROP RAPIDE!!!

Annual Eurovision Winner
This seems more transparent than say, a Bach contata. Is it written that way, is it the performance, or am I just imagining it? Wonderful either way. Love there`s no conductor. Congratulations to all.
Both, probably. Bach used denser polyphony, more chromaticism and more complex harmonic progressions. And on top, French Baroque is nowadays commonly performed very lightly, airily.

Bravo!
What are the names of the trumpet players, please?
On the right is Fruzsina Hara.
Fruzsina Hara and István Lukács play the trumpets here; Koen Plaetinck plays the percussion. We have also added it to the details above. Thank you for the advice and sorry for our omission!
Yeah, I know that you have made repairs/amends, but you must never forget the trumpet 🎺. Magnificent performance...

A truely magnificent performance.
Still, it would only be fair to mention *all* instrumentalists in the credits. I have had the pleasure to experience Fruzsi Hara in several performances. She truely is an exceptional virtuoso at the baroque trumpet.

@@DWClassicalMusic I don't see a credit for the player on the archlute/theorbo.
Very fast. In Italy they would say: in the style of light infantry, the Bersaglieri.
A very fine performance of a very great piece of music; but why no mention of the the two excellent trumpeters and drummer in the description. Shame on the producers !!
AMEN!! I saw that omission, as well, and the woman especially played the heck out of that horn!

Such a great performance. We can only imagine what it would be like if the singers had memorized the score. Really… Imagine that… this is not longer than any opera role. Imagine seeing their faces all the time, hearing their voices projecting not into the paper of the books, but at the microphones,
at the listeners. Imagine each of them flying to creative heights, free of dependence on the books.
Really.
Imagine that.
So who are the trumpeters and the drummer? you carefully list all the violin players, etc; and the vocalists, but not these instrumental players (there may be others un-listed that I didn't detect) -- oh yes, the organist too.
Trumpeters are Fruzsina Hara and István Lukács

English Text of the Te Deum
I. Praise to the Trinity
We praise thee, O God: we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship Thee, the Father everlasting.
To Thee all Angels cry aloud: the Heavens and all the powers therein.
To Thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy: Lord God of Sabaoth;
Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of Thy Glory.
The glorious company of the Apostles praise Thee.
The godly fellowship of the Prophets praise Thee.
The noble army of Martyrs praise Thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge Thee;
The Father of an infinite Majesty;
Thine honourable, true, and only Son;
Also the Holy Ghost: the Comforter.
II. Praise of Christ
Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father.
When Thou tookest upon Thee to deliver man: Thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb.
When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, Thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father.
We believe that Thou shalt come to be our Judge.
We therefore pray Thee, help Thy servants whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious blood.
Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints in glory everlasting.
III. Prayers
O Lord, save Thy people: and bless Thine heritage.
Govern them and lift them up for ever.
Day by day we magnify Thee; and we worship Thy Name, ever world without end.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin.
O Lord, have mercy upon us.
O Lord, let Thy mercy lighten upon us: as our trust is in Thee.
O Lord, in Thee have I trusted: let me never be confounded.
They seemed to have jazzed it up a bit there.
Quién toca los timbales?
Koen Plaetinck plays the percussion here.

Te gloriósus Apostolórum chorus;
Te Prophetárum laudábilis númerus;
Te Mártyrum candidátus laudat exércitus.
Te per orbem terrárum sancta confitétur Ecclésia:
Patrem imménsæ majestátis;
Venerándum tuum verum et únicum Fílium;
Ætérna fac cum sanctis tuis in glória numerári.
Salvum fac pópulum tuum, Dómine,
et bénedic hæreditáti tuæ.
Et rege eos, et extólle illos usque in ætérnum.
Per síngulos dies benedícimus te.
Et laudámus nomen tuum in sǽculum, et in sǽculum sǽculi.
Dignáre, Dómine, die isto sine peccáto nos custodíre.
Miserére nostri, Dómine, miserére nostri.
Fiat misericórdia tua, Dómine, super nos,
quemádmodum sperávimus in te.
In te, Dómine, sperávi: non confúndar in ætérnum.
Notice the old French pronunciation of Latin!
Si, terrificante !!!
Il latino di Gardiner è perfetto.....
Te way the pronounce the "u" is really hurting my ears... can't unhear how silly it sounds... does any one know why they are doing that???
The variety of Latin sung here is the one that would have been heard at the time of Charpentier.
What is it with people in the brass section no longer polishing their instruments?? I despise this trend!
Sound is all that matters. The required to polish a brass instrument is better spent practicing. As the prince of Morocco said in The Merchant of Venice: All that glisters is not gold.
@@chong2389 Incorrect, sound is NOT all that matters. If that were true, we would see symphony orchestras performing in tee shirts, cut-offs, and sandals, some with lit cigarettes dangling from their lips. Sound AND appearance matter.
All brass instruments from that time looked this way, so the replicas do too. It's not down to a lack of polish but to a different brass mixture and handling.
@@theprodigal72 Almost any metal can be polished.
troppo veloce
The stupidity of the 'letterbox' screen format for shows such as this - the instruments are cropped!
If they hadn't done that, the edges of the orchestra--and several more players--would have been cropped. That's how it works.
nice but inferior in many points to the Arts Florissants one.
You are comparing this performance to a recorded performance? That is ridiculous.
This is a live performance and it’s wonderful. You should judge as to whether they’ve kept the spirit of Charpentier’s composition. And these vocalists and instrumentalists have done so.
A lovely piece!
Unfortunately, religious and thus flawed and false.
But what did anyone know back then?
The music is still lovely, even if the text needs to be reworked.
I would love to hear a secular rewrite.
Sorry peeps , but this is not a good version .
very lively and convincing timpani ornamentation + hyper dynamic playing
I think this would have also worked well with 8 singers situated in front of or in the orchestra. Sometimes the choir is a bit "far away" which it can not make up for trough rustle and murmur cause of it's moderate size and clarity.
Poor Charpantier, oppressed by Lully
