    TH-cam memberships are now live on my channel for anyone interested. Same tiers as Patreon except there are special badges and emojis you get over here for joining. Early access at tier 2, and a brand new tier I've introduced as of this change called 'Slice of Life' (tier 3). This'll be more personal, less polished content like games, Q&As, out of theatre reactions etc.
    If you're looking for any more info feel free to reply to this comment, and to look at the badges etc click on join and they'll come up. All that said, hope you enjoy our return to Buffy! ❤

    Buffy's definitely up there as one of the most rewarding shows I've watched for the same reason you were mentioning here: there are actual consequences, both practically and emotionally, for the actions and choices characters make. Nothing is skipped over or ignored, and characters are allowed to react to the things that impact them in a way that makes sense. So many shows skip over or just fully ignore things that in the real world would really impact these protagonists, just so they can conveniently move things along. But I think most great moments in shows are moments that feel messy and real, and Buffy's great at that, especially from this point onwards. Looking forward to what you think of the rest of the season!

      @Ri-Lizzie ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes! And I would add that Buffy is not perfect. Her flaws are on display and depending on the episode/season become larger issues for her to work through. She is an icon for character.

    For this era of television, even this cursory discussion of trauma was pretty groundbreaking. Even though it mostly resolved, it was more than we got back then. I especially liked how they played with the supernatural explanations for her behaviours, as the supernatural in this show is often a metaphor for real life problems, but to have it be explained by trauma is a wonderful choice. Probably my favourite opener.

  • @bashby97
    @bashby97 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    You probably realised this but the "I may be dead, but I'm still pretty" line is in the recap to remind us all she died! Also fun fact (that you also probably know by now) but Buffy was created as a kind of mid-season fill in show which is why season 1 is shorter and less serialised

  • @psychomagicshop

    The trauma isn’t instantly healed but she needed to release tension into something that felt like a source. Ultimately it’s her role that traumatizes her and that is something she never quite shakes.

  • @Teeklin
    @Teeklin ปีที่แล้ว +7

    To your point about Prophecy Girl and her support system...that's what the series is actually. There have been endless generations of slayers going back thousands of years, why do we see the story of Buffy? She's the first one who didn't follow tradition, to be alone. In the first episode Giles talks about keeping her identity secret, not telling family or friends. That's every Slayer until Buffy and that's where we come in, to see what happens when the superpowers in a fight between good and evil go to a girl who doesn't just do what she's told.
    It's a larger allegory for feminism and breaking out of traditional gender roles, and over all seven seasons you'll see how they handle that theme and the challenges that arise. But at it's heart, Buffy is the story of a girl discovering the power she has inside herself and using it to stand up to forces from all sides trying to tell her what to do. And you see the consequences of doing that many times, good and bad.
    Love the content man, really one of my favorite reactors so fast after finding your channel with your sense of humor and insights. Keep up the great work!

  • @lepidoptera7856
    @lepidoptera7856 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    You impressed me with your insight re Buffy overcompensating for her dread about coming back to slaying. I never saw it that way-I always read it as her craving violence/action after a long stifled summer of not processing her feelings, and she finally has something to take them out on-but your read makes way more sense to me. Of course she wouldn’t be ready yet to jump back into the thing that killed her, sacred calling or not. She is, as was made clear last time, only sixteen years old.
    Bonus points for rolling your eyes again at that inane “I’m still pretty” line 😂

    • @Nexusofgeek
      @Nexusofgeek ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I don't see it as that inane, I think it was a way for her to put down the Master in her own unique way. She was effectively saying, yea you drowned me in that muck, but I am still wearing my special dress and I am still pretty

      It’s hard for me to separate certain lines of dialogue from the adult man who wrote them for a teenage girl to say. And while this line obviously resonates as powerful to some, to me it just undermines an already powerful moment. This girl is back from the dead. She was treated like trash to throw away by a master vampire, and here she is, still standing and not even scared. (Or at least hiding it really well.) I feel the rest of the scene (“You have fruit punch mouth”) communicates that beautifully without shrinking her badassitude down to the way she looks. Doing so just feels very “written by a man.” But I’m not trying to argue or change your mind, just explaining why I feel the way I do about that line. 😅

    Willow: Why else would Buffy be acting like such a B-I-T-C-H?
    Giles: I think we're a little too old to be spelling things out anymore.
    Xander: A 'bitca'?
    Still one of my favorite Xander jokes, no matter how silly. 😆🤣 I still use the word "bitca" to this day. The bummer is, most of my friends and family haven't seen Buffy so they don't understand the joke. *sigh

  • @killianlpc
    @killianlpc ปีที่แล้ว +12

    A great opener from S2 Buffy obviously suffering from PTSD, and taking it all out on her friends. Interesting after Buffy sexually teases Xander on the dancefloor, and then Cordelia even tries to intervene referencing Buffy to Joan Collins as a type of 'Uber Bitch' because she knows that behaviour herself. All's well at the end and a bit of comic relief with The Anointed One ' I hate that girl' Another well written episode exploring psychological illness and how it can affect others. On re-watch you can notice so much more in each episode that was missed first time round. Good reaction again.

    A new Buffy reaction from Tyler makes a great start to the day. This is a really strong start to S2 addressing Buffy's trauma from Prophecy Girl and I've always liked that they didn't gloss over it. I'm glad you enjoyed Xander in this episode. As a 17 year old, he's on that cusp of being a bit more mature but still with all the stuff that being a teenager brings and I've always loved when we get to see a bit more of him asserting himself.

    Yay Buffy (and tyler reactions) are back! I like this episode and its portrayal of PTSD. as you say, its not just glossed over and our heroine is acting...not super heroic. Its great to see that shes human. She has flaws and she deals with crap like all of us (of course not the same kind of crap, but still). Makes her much more well rounded character.

    the show delves into musical level logic sometimes, but it is pretty consistently smart about the writing and the depth of all the subjects they try to cover. some of the best show writing out there that does not rely huge overarching stories we see explore in a few episodes. I love the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul universe, but sometimes it feels like a super long movie that is cut up into episodes. Buffy allows for small changes in character over time with many episodes in a monster of the week format. Makes for a show that can be judges on an episode by episode basis, but also a strong message that is unique to every episode.
    My favorite show for a good reason!

    One thing I see missed a lot on the Buffy Sexy Dance with Xander, is that dance wasn't only about hurting Xander, because Buffy knew Xander had a crush on her and that line "Did I ever thank you for saving my life ... don't you wish I would?" was definitely designed to hurt Xander. That Sexy Dance was also about hurting Willow. Buffy *knows* Willow has a crush on Xander. And she was right there doing the Sexy Dance in front of Willow; forcing Willow to watch. That was also about hurting Willow.

    I do not place as much blame on Buffy's dad for the summer as you do. When he said Buffy was distant, that was Buffy's depression shining through. And when you suffer from depression and you are in that funk, other people can't break you out of it, no matter how much interest they show in you. It's not her dad's fault she was suffering, and there really was nothing he could do about it. I could talk more about Buffy's depression, but I won't at this time.
