These people fight inequality in the Netherlands | VPRO Backlight

There is a gap across the Netherlands between rich and poor. But Tim 'S Jongers prefers to talk about the gap between 'hopeful' and 'hopeless'. How can we bridge that? Backlight is looking for people who know both worlds.
VPRO Backlight shows the chasms that run right through the Netherlands, but especially the people who try to close those chasms. Because there are almost too many gaps to mention: those between higher and lower educated people, between permanent contracts and flexible workers, between homeowners and tenants, between the privileged and the underprivileged, between the wealthy and the indebted.
Systems and institutions that were once set up to provide support and hope to people in the most difficult position have in recent decades become well-oiled machines of institutionalized distrust, in which no one has confidence after the benefits affair. Our current system all too often crushes the hopes of too many people.
Especially now that crisis is piling up on crisis and the middle class is also more confronted with poverty, the realization seems to be getting through: things have to be radically different. But how? How do we offer hope to the hopeless? How do we close the gap between hopeful and hopeless?
