7:35 We were amongst the first families to move into Moss Heights (1954/55). Tallest multi-storey in Europe at the time; built on top of a hill, so great views of the Campsies from the back, but the windows on the short sides between the blocks would often get blown out by the force of wind! They also forgot to design the lifts big enough to allow for furniture and coffins 😯
Barbara. Most of the buildings that were demolished were not structurally worth saving. Infact I would say none of them could be saved. The buildings , even when new were poorly built. It's not remembered or maybe understood, that the poor got dealt a difficult hand from the begining. Their housing ,wasnt particularly well built from the start. I know because I was a building student in 1974. My first job was a planner with a contractor, we looked at estimating refurbishment work. It was difficult enough saving the properties the council asked us to price. We talked to insurance companies since they had records of old buildings without proper foundations. Some walls were built with very weak cement. And also our labour were not house or tenement builders. I was a student and the project manager was a senior carpenter. It was a difficult time. The men incharge were quantity surveyors, only interested in prices. And like it or not no one wanted to loose money. The prices went in and sometimes the work didn't get the go ahead. My great grand father was manager of either Buchanan or Queens Street Station ftom about 1900 till 1920. His eldest son and daughters all grew up and lived in Glasgow. Their families, my cousins and I lived in Glasgow. That's why I was drawn to this video. Both maternal and paternal great grand parents worked and produced offspring who all lived in Glasgow. Some of them are still living there. And everyone of us know that the Glasgow of today could never have been any better. The ship builders left, sold their yards. The men who had jobs in these yards were out of work. I learnt building construction from civil engineers not builders. We've discussed this every Christmas for fifty years. Without the ship yards Glasgow could not afford to rebuild. The city planners needed something to replace them. Regeneration has come slowly. Starting with new roads, New schools New housing paid for by central government. Not from Holyrood. If we were to build a ship repair yard or a deep sea naval yard we couldn't. The labour has gone, the skills have not passed onto the best generation. We are a city of services. Restaurants, bars, shops, offices, schools and colleges. The Dutch have a ship servicing industry. We have great Hotels, Museums, Art Galleries but dont have a highly skilked workforce. We have highly skiĺled doctors, scientists, virologists, historians, lawyers, accountants, bankers but not builders.

Too many wonderful old building torn down instead of being renovated. Sure there was lots of genuine slums that were too far gone to save but they destroyed far too many gems along the way.

Does anyone believe as I do that the photo at the minute 12.13-12.22 is Ashton Lane? It's awesome to see the lane as it was so long ago. What a great city Glasgow is. Glasgow architecture is second to none among medium to big size cities in Europe, and that cultural heritage, which makes Glasgow a very attractive place to visit, should be always preserved. Thank you very much for posting this most interesting and beautiful photo reportage.
Shug: Was the ‘temple’ on a side road close to Sauchiehall street? I can remember a night club there about 40yrs ago but haven’t ever seen the building again, it was a beautiful building the stone was very black with pollution/smog...
Shug: I’ve heard similar regarding the corruption of council officials, money buys their approval on building permits, development, licences and whatever else they can get their sticky mitts on.
I remember my dad took me on the underground train from St Enoch to goodness knows where then we just went back again just so I could have a ride on the train. Must have been around 1964 or '65. Fantastic music btw what's it called?
jazzman that was good your dad had the insight to do that. we regularly took the subway from st George's cross to shields road to visit an aunt in Pollok st.. I was so sad when I did the same a number of years ago to discover there was no Pollok st. raised to the ground . so sad. my mum's house was raised to the ground at st George's cross for motorways. turns out they built new houses there.
castlemilk is but a dive now but its wonderful past can still be seen in the odd building from the 1800s on the land scape sadly next to a dump of run down council houses
Might be wrong could be the Empire tower in Bellahouston park, 1938 exhibition built in record time, torn down as it might have been used by German air force as a landmark, only thing I can think of that was built so different in style.

If you want to paint Glasgow in a bad way by showing it's most deprived areas this is the video for you but there were and are some more afflunent places in the city that this left out.

Thanks to the Bruce report in 1945 a lot of beautiful buildings were demolished instead of renovated.
City planners did more harm than the Luftwaffe.
