    A huge improvement and you saved a pile of money too. Just one tip for anyone watching. If you mix mortar in a bucket you should add enough water to make a dryish mix and then keep mixing until the softness you want comes, just adding a touch of water if needed. This will take 5 minutes and make your arms ache, so when it's ready grab a coffee before starting work. Even a good bricklayer/plasterer will struggle with a wrong mix.

      NotwiseDIY my house is 170 years old, three story, chimney has a lot of damage, you’ve got me thinking I might get this done myself, I know the neighbour won’t chip in to cover the €€€€€€€. for the repair, but my place is getting water damage on the ground floor because of it, not to mention the third and fourth floor

    In the time you spent cutting sections out and replacing, you could have rebuilt the stack. Looks like it needed it imo. The more of your footage I see, it definitely needs re-building!

      I think I need to do that. I bent some 1" emt conduit and it works but not as stiff as I'd like it to be. Might need to do like you did with the square tube, nice little roof ladders.

    I dont think your old bricks are quite as old as you said you thought they were.
    If they were I am pretty sure they had a hollow on the bottom instead of holes all the way through.

    That chimney could have so easily collapsed taking those bricks out

    heads or tails........... that’s the odds of it falling through the roof when you do this type of job in this way.

    This doesn't look safe. Saving 2 grand is not worth the risk of serious injury or even worse.

    Why not just use Brick effect wallpaper :-) Far handier.

  • @galactic904

    Demolish it and install a Faux Brick chimney surround. $500 for material, then its a 1 or 2-day labour cost at $30 per hour.

    £2000 to take down and rebuild was your quote from a builder?

    • @andrewbatts7678
      @andrewbatts7678 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      stephen smith I would have charged $1200 tops to rebuild that, it would take us 4 hours at the most not counting clean up

    Can the fireplace be used after this? Or is it just for aesthetics.

    • @TheProjectGuy194
      @TheProjectGuy194  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ryan West yes the fire is used every day during winter months, we do have oil fired heating but wife like the open fire at night, havn't no problems sinse i repaired the chimney. To be honenest you need a head for heights to attempt to be up on roof.

    Using cement is a no go. Traditional lime mortar and lime haunch should be used always. This is why you pay for someone to do this.
