  • Because ophiolites form by seafloor spreading, the importance of ophiolites for tectonics has been recognized since the early days of plate tectonics. Two challenges related to that are discussed in this talk:
Challenge 1: How do we confidently identify ophiolites? Most ophiolites are structurally disrupted during emplacement and later deformation. How do we assess the extent to wedge a pile of igneous rocks is or is not an ophiolite? Once we do that, can we use this information to reconstruct the ophiolite record back in time?
Challenge 2: Where and how do ophiolites form? there are several tectonic environments where seafloor spreading occurs. Most form in becomes the forearc of a convergent plate margin as a result of strong extension during subduction initiation.
One example of the application of our improving understanding of where and how ophiolites form from the Early Cretaceous of southern Tibet is given.
