Most of the time it can be easily discarded like when Pol went to the seance to find out if her daughter was really dead and Esme told her it was a scam. Or when Tommy went to find out if the Sapphire was cursed and the woman clearly lied to him just so he could cope and not blame himself (entirely) for Grace's death. Same situation here. Ruby died of a common disease at the time. Not because some random woman cursed the previous owner of the sapphire, because as we know that stone had multiple previous owners. Most of the time it adds another layer to the story, like Tommy's black cat dream in S5, but this season is honestly my least favorite, amongst other things, because of this. They had great writers and directors in this show and they proved that in previous seasons. However, this season they just heavily leaned onto the supernatural, and most of the time it felt like "it's because plot needs to happen" which is probably why I just wasn't vibing with it as much. Ruby's death just feels like it's made to happen just to have Tommy do things while the main plot develops, but the return of the cursed sapphire really doesn't add anything to the main story being told other than the return of Esmeralda for a few minutes and I guess the introduction of Duke - both characters aren't necessary for the main plot. Then again, the main plot (Opium & Fascism) makes little sense ether, but that's another story.

It reminds me of the last season of sopranos where everything is dark and meaningful and you see the main character pay dues for his sins.
