No matter what the drummer & bass player play there will always be a horn player complaining about it
Just finding a horn player who will play WITH you and not just noodle around, completely out of time, over the top can be difficult 😂

Great video. I'm a bassist who tends to play ahead of the beat at times. I've played with some excellent drummers who would accommodate and beautifully lay back a bit. Then before I knew it, they somehow managed to subtly recalibrate my push. Man, I love excellent drummers. A bass players brother in the groove.
Develop your own inner clock, stop leaning on the drummer. This is endemic in today's players. Check out Miles great quintet with Herbie, Ron and Tony. Nobody leaned on any body else. That's what made this group great.
@@victorparedes4863 I never said I didn't have an inner clock. When the adrenaline flows, I tend to push the beat a bit depending on the situation. And I have found that drummers who are great time keepers are able to make the adjustment to snap me right out of it. It goes both ways. I've righted drummers who are either lagging or a bit ahead of the beat also. It's called teamwork. Teammates pick each other up. A coach doesn't tell the player to just work on his end of it and let the rest of the players worry about their end of it. That's not what a team is, and that's not what a band does.

Excellent! See, the groove isn't everybody playing the exact same thing - it's FEELING the same thing. That requires a deep understanding of these small differences in timing. Great discussion by two real pros.

I wish I could find a drummer as good as this guy. He is so subtle, everything sounds beautiful. The amount of times I have to ask a drummer to tone it down on gigs. Do they not understand they play a LOUD instrument and that being a good drummer is not only about technique but also about control. Choosing the drums is like choosing a pit bull as a pet, not a bad thing per se, but if you don't train it properly it is going to f*** up the picnic!
This. Especially as a singer, your overtones (the sound quality) often get blocked by drummers playing too much rides or at the wrong moments. We and the audience need the high frequencies above singing range to always recalibrate not only the pitch (that should work on its own) but the expression too and we're only able to do that when the drummer leaves enough space. I don't care much what other instruments do (they can come in whenever they want) but I follow the base most and the drummer should listen to me, maybe even know my text and phrasing but also be in dialogue, pulling / pushing with the base. Leave some space goddammit :) If you can pull it off, you're awesome with brushes, hihat and snare alone :) you need the rides to control the lagging brass but not me :)
For a drummer the control comes with learning how to play at ppp. Just learning to touch the instrument.

great discussion on "time". being a drummer i've heard too many times how I am the sole time keeper, but i see it more as the band is the time, everyone a touch ahead, behind or on the beat...then the bass and drums in their zone so the other layers can flow on top...thats what makes esp live music so cool....when the band is locked...thats when magic happens....
Exactly how I feel about it. If any of the other players lose the plot if the drums stop, they need to either up their game or be replaced. Everyone in the band should be able to retain the time in their head.
I LOVE Both Y'ALL. And you know I do. I'm desperately trying to teach this all over the world. Musicians looking at me crazy when I explain I need y'all to play RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE. Period because I'm phrasing around the TEMPO. Now days I just send them these type TH-cam Clips. Thanks for this one. I'm all up on here looking for teaching tools. I don't play base or drums, but I sung with BOTH you guys so I know what tempo spoze to be like. LOL

I was taught by a former big band drummer that the Bass always carries the tempo. I used that knowledge to form a trio of 2 guitars and a bass and it works well. Great post

Greg Hutchinson I hope do more videos with Christian McBride, because it helps me as a bass player how to play with a drummer. You Christian go through the great duos like Paul Chambers and Philly Jones, and etc.
This is a delight. Bottom line is there are many different ways to groove between drums and bass (or different rhythm section configurations) the most important thing is to get on the same page with whomever you're playing with; sometimes that means literally talking thru it, and analyzing your groove together. You also have to have an awareness of your own feel in relation to the metronome.

So what im getting from this... it seems that the bass is more dictating the subdivisions and how much swing there is as opposed to the actual downbeat.

I saw a vid recently of a producer talking about the wave forms of drum and bass sounds and how different producer line them up different ways on the millisecond level. Its like wether or not to line up the beginning of the sound or its first volume peak with the other instruments in the mix in relation to the down beat. Either way i think the subtle discrepancies of perfect-imperfect rhythm are super important for all musicians and seldom talked about.

The point at 4:00 is phenomenal, and important to understand. When the drummer does that rapid walk with the high hats, it makes the bassist accelerate, sometimes to the point where the bass remains awkwardly ahead of the drums, and you end up with 1.5 rhythm sections, instead of exactly 1.0 rhythm section. Philosophically, I believe in having only one rhythm section, but that’s just me, because there’s no way to confuse the soloist. Giving me a fresh breath with crash cymbal, and centering me, is exactly what I want my drummer doing.

I think the music controls who should take control of the tempo. There's a communication that happens between Bass and Drums. I learned that it has to breath... creating space...That example of Killer Joe is a great interpretation.
