I ran into a problem with the electrical on my 74 vw Thing and have been trying to troubleshoot for days.. after watching this video on how to change the switches, and noticing that I had to unplug the 3 connectors under the column, I noticed none of mine where actually plugged in! I plugged them in and everything is working! ( btw the car was in a barn since 82 and hasn’t seen daylight.. so it’s a complete restore) and I know you work on bugs, but you have helped me tremendously on my Thing! Thanks!
Outstanding Brian! I am glad that worked out for you my friend. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. And good luck with everything you do, may you enjoy many miles on the road.
We just recently bought a 1974 Super Beetle and I'm finding your videos quite helpful. One trick to try when installing the bushing and bearing at the top of the steering shaft is to get a piece of pvc pipe from the local hardware store. Match the diameter of the pvc pipe to the solid portion of the bearing and using a rubber mallet or dead blow hammer, drive the bearing/bushing down the shaft until they are seated.
Absolutely an excellent idea my friend. My problem is I get too lazy to stop what I’m doing and run to the store while videoing lol. Thank you so much for being here.
Thanks a bunch. Nicely done step by step. I thought I might need a new double u-joint shaft but this did the trick. Replaced the bushing and the steering wheel feels comfortable and confident.
Outstanding! I’m glad it was helpful. That was one of the first videos I did so it didn’t come out very good. I wished I could do another one since I got used to the camera a little more.
I really appreciate all the time you take to get a picture for us like the two Allen bolts and about a million other pictures like that which make it so clear and easy to understand. I pretty much go to your YT and search for anything I am going to try before I try it and almost always you have done it already and have a bunch of clews and suggestions. Thank you, from Fallbrook, CA!
Thanks for taking the time to comment Daniel. I appreciate that. And I truly hope the video helps you a lot. There’s quite a few videos on the 73 super that I did here. And now I will be starting on a 68 basically everything will be close to the same for except the front suspension.
Thanks Slade! That bushing was missing on my 74 super shaft. Thankfully I was able to persuade the bearing out from the top without having to pull the gas tank. Bushing on order. Can't wait to have a tight wheel.
As far as bushings/bearings go (upper and lower column), is the Standard Beetle the same as the Super Beetle? Mine is (you guessed it!) a Standard Beetle.
I believe they are slightly different. I am going to be redoing my 68 standard beetle column within the next three or four weeks of course on video. Hopefully it helps if you have not got that far yet.
Mr. Slade, I love the extra tips you add to your explanations. I would have busted my teeth with the steering wheel for sure without that tip of leaving the nut on there. Thanks!
Thank you so much Jared! Oh trust me, many years ago I didn’t leave the nut on a few turns. And I was yanking very hard, I guess you know what happened. I never forgot that. 😁 I am so thankful that these videos are worth doing, especially when I see comments like this.

Thanks for discovering that your part came from west coast metric. I searched their site. They are 1/2 the cost of jbugs and Wolfsburg. They don’t have everything, but they have parts for the column that are on back order from jbugs at 1/2 cost. Thanks. Good video too. My anti rattle is metal for some reason. I switched it and saved the metal one.. we will see.
Great Videos Slade! Very helpful. I have steering column issues on my newly acquired '68. Now I know where to look and how to tackle. Cheers from California!
I’m glad that you like the video and I truly hope it helps out. That was more towards the beginning of my videos, I wasn’t quite as used to filming. It came out perfect the steering is nice and tight just like brand new. I’m going to be doing the one on my 68 which is very similar but now I know how to film a little better LOL
My '74 has a one-piece ignition switch setup that slides off the steering column (with a little convincing) once you unbolt that Allen bolt on the left side. Actually, it looks like this one does, too. It's super handy for replacing that anti-rattle bushing when the gas tank is still in. In my case, I somehow lost the bushing while replacing the ignition switch last year.
It’s nice to be able to replace it with the gas tank still in place. I do certain things for filming reasons. To get better angles especially while parts are not in the way. That little anti-shim bushing can cause a lot of aggravation when it’s not there.
Thank you so much for this, I have the exact same problem in my car and both my Haynes manual and my other book have been almost no help. I'm on my way to getting it patched up thanks to your info

It is kinda a pain in the butt! I never seen the one I linked you too. But, my 68 doesn’t have a key. So I’m going to be stuck in the same boat sort of.
@@SladesVWBeetle haha even my factory service manual wasn’t a help I was really stumped to be honest.
Yeah sometimes the manuals are not that great for certain things. That’s why in the videos I get into some strange positions with things that I do, so people can actually see it in real time.
I gave up after fighting with my snap ring for an hour. Wouldn't budge so I stopped before I lost my cool
Did you try may be spraying a little PB blast around it? Take your time it’s been on there for a long time.
Looks like you forgot to reinstall the upper spacer that sits between the upper bearing and the steering wheel. Other than that, well done. Like I said, I need to do mine bad!
If you meant the white plastic spacer? I did put it in after I seen it on the floor 🙄😁
@@SladesVWBeetle I noticed the missing spacer as well and was confused. You should annotate that in the video that you need to put the spacer in. Great video though. Very helpful.
@@shane8177 I definitely will try to see if I can edit it without removing it from being online. My 68 is here that I am doing now. So I will be doing the same exact thing with a little more caution with a spacer.
And you forgot to put the round disc for the u joint boot back on! Lol
Ken R. I had to redo it lol
Oops I see you did reinstall it lol
Ken R. Yeah I did. My brain sometimes...well ya know 😂
👍🏼
Thank you!
I can't believe you sprayed brake clean all over your hand. Four times! There are plenty of nasty chemicals in there that absorb right through your skin and into your blood. Some of them cause arrhythmias.
E-Curb Yes and your right!! It is very difficult to get gloves over the past months near me. But...your right! Not a good practice!!! And thanks for caring and commenting
