  • In this video, we refurbish a pair of Wilcox heritage style boots with Vibram wedge soles. This customer wanted to ditch the traditional heel blocks and leather soles for a new look. After the resole, we finished these boots off with Saphir Greasy Leather Cream.

    Shoe Restoration: My nine year-old son and I found your channel some months ago, we were instantly hooked. We appreciate the craft and functional art of shoe restoration and y’alls drive to make the channel educational and rooted a strong work ethic. I picked up a pair of cap-toe Allen Edmond Park Avenue after your eBay challenge. Picked up Saphire Creme 1925, Renovateur, and Crème Rénovatrice. I used acetone to get off all the old product and to get a good base to start on the conditioning, scratch filling, and buffing processes. I could not believe how beautiful the uppers came out. The soles and welts are a different story. The heels are worn to the blocks. You can see heavy loose leather fibers wearing almost completely away at the ball-joints with the welt totally separated from the uppers on one of the toes due to the stitching being worn out. One of the insoles has all these tiny circular marks as if some hasty cobbler was trying to get them out the door. I wanted to support my local cobblers but to my dismay no one had ever heard of JR or even grades of leather. One guy said “we have cow leather”. I did find one older well-respected cobbler but he said JR wouldn’t let him buy the soles and he was also having hand surgery on both hands so he would not be able to work on my shoes. His joints were not doubt the victim of his success. I said god bless and wished him well. For the time being the shoes are hanging on my pegboard like an old Toyota truck in the junkyard waiting for someone to realize it’s potential.

  • @d8ve

    The boots look like a Wilcox “Shiloh”, calfskin lined, padded collar, Goodyear welt, and two part sole. They look pretty good once you started deconstructing them as well. Apparently a new company that had a kickstarter startup. Let me know if I’m correct on the brand. Dang, watched to the end and was right.

    • @jamestarver
      @jamestarver 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looks exactly like mine, I bought them via the Kickstarter. They are stamped with Wilcox on the top of the tongue but it is fading away as they break in so maybe thats why they could not identify the brand on these?

    • @d05wtt
      @d05wtt 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, looks like the Wilcox Shiloh for sure. I almost bought a pair but I saw too many reviews of people saying their Wilcox boots were falling apart like soles coming apart after a month or 2. I hope they fixed their problems.

    Shoe restoration: 25 year old Quoddy Moc Classic Ring Boot...Lived in a pair of these since 1972 but got this particular pair in the 90's. The leather soles were not made for everyday wear on hard surfaces and are not waterproof to say the least. Would like a sole that would allow them to be worn on hard surfaces but still maintains the character of the boot. I'm a luthier and have a great appreciation for traditional craftsmanship. Love watching your work and truly appreciate the sheer ability it takes to revive "well-loved shoes."

    Shoe Restoration: My Red Wing 2944 Harvesters. My first real pair of boots that I wore to work as a barista every day for one of the most difficult years of my life. They were worn on unfinished concrete 8-10 hours a day, no shoe trees, and no breaks. I’ve since moved onto driving a long-haul semi and expanded my boot collection, but they are still my favorites. Unfortunately water has started to seep through the sole, the heel is starting to round off from my walk, and the vamp has more wrinkles than my grandma. The loss of weather resistance unfortunately means they’re not quite fit for regular truck duty. They’re no longer sold in the US, and I’m far too attached to let them go. I’ll probably send them off to you guys regardless! Thanks for doing this, y’all rock.

    SHOE RESTORATION: I have a nice pair of elephant ear hide boots that my father had made a long time ago, they were a perfect fit and he passed them to me, I wore them a lot then, sent them to someone for some work, they came back and lasted about 3 months, everything fell apart on them, cheap leather wore out fast, bad stitching busted BAD... they changed my shank shape I think, because it felt like i had a magic marker running down the middle of my foot, nails bent over under the heel were not nice to stand on, and something they did made them tight over the top of the foot, they were not comfortable to have on for more than an hour or so.... in short these poor boots need a LOT of tender love and care to return them to their former glory.

      I would assume the paste might be used on a boot like this with a very high and prevalent shank and a overall deeper space to fill out compared to sheets on something more flat and even like a dress shoe, but I have no experience as a cobbler I'd love to hear from the man himself on it tbh.

    I have a pair of straped Dehner's. The pretty beat up sole, started falling off after the stitches failed, used shoe glue to make it a little better. Were used as everyday riding and work boots. Rain or beach doesn't matter got them from Salvation Army for $10, but comfortable and classic, some minor cracks on the right one. Wore them for a year before failure.

    Great video. The worn in patina on these boots shows the best reason to resole good boots. You can’t buy boots that look as good as that, you have to create them.

They are the comfiest pair I own, but the previous repair on them was abysmal. If there is someone up for the task and who I’d trust them with, that’d be you two. Shoe restoration: I'm a Navy veteran and worked on the flight deck of the USS Theodore Roosevelt during operation Desert Storm, Desert Shield, and Provide Comfort. I have always taken care of my boots, and always resoled them with Vibram crepe soles to give me better comfort and protection on the flight deck. I still have my last pair of boots and would love to get them resoled and conditioned again after all these years. They are in decent shape, but the soles have seen better days!

    I really appreciate you guys. You two have really helped me appreciate the need to have things that can last a long time. And that rely on real human work. I'm glad you are expanding and offering free services to subscribers. However, I really wish you guys had someone to respond to emails. I sent three different emails (after submitting an order!) and have yet to hear back. I can only imagine you all probably got thousands of shoes from around the world because of the great work you do. And I'm okay with a 1, 2, or even a 3-month wait for a resoling. But the non-communication (especially on a pair of shoes that my dad has had for over 30 years) is disappointing.

    Just went on the Wilcox Boot website. Their new generation of boots with thicker rubber look really good, that few mm of extra thickness in the heal and toe rubber will certainly help with the problematic wear areas on these traditional leather soled shoes.

    I have a pair of Rockport boat shoes which I have had for a good few years. Resoled once locally, here in the UK, they are in need of restoration and resoling again. These became my ‘go to’ pair of shoes as they fit like a glove and maybe claim the honour of my most comfortable pair to date.

    Shoe Restoration: In 1980 I started my first job as a gas pump attendant. The first thing I purchased with my very first paycheck was a pair of Kodiak work boots. I worked in them, hunted, fished and wore them all through high school. They disappeared for many years, and when I finally found them again tucked away in my parents attic (I joined the military in 1985 and just put everything away when I left home) they were pretty much unwearable. The soles are now petrified rubber, the uppers are very dried out and some little critter chewed the very top of the tongue on one boot and part of the back spine on the other boot. I have resisted throwing them away after so many years because they bring back some great memories from my teenage years.

    Shoe Restoration: I’ve got a pair of G.H. Bass camp moc boots with a very oily pull up leather upper, and the mini lug-style soles are starting to wear away already. I’ve had them for about a year. Would be really cool if the sole could be redone as a traditional camp moc sole instead of mini lug, but the mini lug could be redone as well. Thanks for putting on this contest!

    Shoe Restoration: Bought a pair of boots a few years ago and love them so much. They are my favorite shoes and are just coming to the end of life now. The leather is still good, but the stitching is coming out and the sole is getting very thin. They are a wingtip style boot, brown, with a lot of broughing on them. An in between type of boot that aren't good year welted, but were not a cheap boot, and I am at a loss. I don't know if I could trust them to most cobblers, but I love your videos and have seen you save worse boots that were needing more. I use them all the time for preaching at my church, but am not really able to do it much more. Thanks for all the videos. I watch them all!

    I have three (3) problem shoe pairs. All are second hand shoes purchased at thrift stores.
    1. Allen Edmond's (AE) Auburn, needs new soles and heel pads. One shoe has hole in sole. Uppers need a small bit of work.
    2. AE's Fairhaven, it looks like a botched re-sole and restraining (red) with visible spots on the uppers. The red is a good color but needs work. I bought the Saphir Hermes Red to try and fix it.
    3. AE's MacNeil, previous owner must have had a shorter leg. One of the shoes has an addition sole layer and higher heel. Uppers are a bit rough. The interiors had some sort of foam padding added that I've only partly been able to remove.
    The uppers are all on my to do list but the soles and heels definately need your professional help!
    Once again a helpful and informative video!

    Shoe restoration: A pair of RockinLeather ropers where I really wore into the heel block more than I should have, and on the other boot, it looks like I wore a gap into the cork. I had just started watching your videos months back and realized I needed to retire the boots for now. I took photos of the damage so far.
    I'd love to get some sort of rubber outsole put on them as I really wore down the leather faster than I imagined just in 5 months at work.

    Shoe Restoration - my daily worn boots are a pair of Thorogoods. Love them but I’m pretty rough on them as I have a woodworking business. Shoe Restoration: My pair of Allen Edmond Strands are in desperate need of a re-sole, renovateur, polish and shine. I treated myself to them for my wedding 3.5 years ago. they were my first pair of nice, GYW shoes and I did not treat them how I should have. Love your channel and your content. The front half of my soles started to seperate so I took them to a local boot maker (Wyoming so exclusively cowboy boots) he put a new stitch in the front half of both shoes but used white thread instead of brown and the stitch is not the most consistent in terms of following the previous stitches (also didn't remove the prior brown thread) so they look a little like Frankenstein.

    Shoe Restoration:
    I learned a lot by watching your videos. Yes, I had high-end shoes such as Ferragamo, Allen Edmond, the old Florsheim Shell Cordovan Imperials, Aldens etc....and never had any rebuilds done. Typically, after a couple of years, even before they are worn out, I donated to the Salvation Army. Now after being educated which from now on I'll just have my shoes rebuild and they would be as good as new. Perhaps even better because they already were broken in and conform to my feet.
