I pre-ordered a standalone FX tuner and have been testing it extensively in the relatively short time I've had it (about a week) on my Brocock Sniper XR. It fits perfectly on this gun and more importantly it has improved the shot accuracy from the barrel without question. When I got it I was surprised on how much it weighed. I hadn't realised it was 190 grams (Duh!) but on the gun it doesn't feel too heavy but I'm one that likes to shoot from a bench so maybe the weight wasn't so important. It's extremely well machined and I've found that I can wind it back up to nine and a half revolutions in total. The sweet spot so far for me has been to wind it back 4 revolutions for superb shot consistency. I'll probably spend many more months testing it before I've finished. I wouldn't hesitate to endorse this product and I've no connection to FX or any other commercial entities. Merry Xmas Giles to you and your family and all the best for the new year.✌👍😁
Great video Giles, but.... My personal view is that you can better tune your barrel by the following existing ways: 1. Barrel carbon sleeve for slim fx barrels 2. An external shroud with a nipple type end moderator adaptor that screw tightens on the end barrel ( I use that on my compatto) 3. A shroud system with 3d printed tight spacer rings that firms the barrel centered within the barrel 4. One or maybe two old style barrel bands firmed at a steady part of the gun (not the pr. Tube) 5. A thicker barrel
I make 3 slip on sleeves for my son's Artemis M16 .22. Replaced the original barrel and shroud with a LW polygon barrel. The slip on sleeves or weights is 20mm 30mm and 40mm in length. I did the tuning of the barrel at 25m and the best results was achieved with AA 18gr pellets at 30ftlb at my home benchrest range. I did shot at the shooting range at our club at 50m. If there is no wind it shoots x on x. My sub 12ftlb the moderator does the trick. Tests don
Thank you Giles for this one. I was thinking of ordering one of these but to be honest, now that I’ve seen one in action, I’ll save my pennies for more ammo. Merry Christmas my friend. All the best to you and yours in the New Year.
Interesting topic and discussion, Giles. I found the accuracy of my springers improved when I tried a steel moderator, which is notably heavier than the Weihrauch originals I was using. I tried it to shorten the overall length of the guns and the better accuracy was an unexpected side benefit. l reckon the improvement is due to the weight helping damp barrel movement caused by the recoil. I can't say or measure whether harmonics has anything to do with it. The improvement isn't massive, but it's definitely there. Have since bought a couple for my other guns. Nice that they are so much cheaper (although not as pretty) than lightweight shrouds from companies such as Hugget.
Ive noticed my rifle has much tighter groups with my silencer on 🤔 dont know the wizadry or phisics behind that but works well for me so it stays as is 😊 great video gyles verry interesting 👍
Doing groups at 80 meters is the difference and the work of the barrel tuners with the groups closing considerably is noticeable. Perfect for thinning various types of ammo without messing with the gun's tuning. The short distance doesn't even show the possibilities with a perfect group at 20 meters but once taken to great distances it doesn't work. If you want to find the perfect tuning of the tuners it has to be long distance.
I concur with your findings. These will not fix a badly tuned gun... but it does has a subtle influence. There are several complete revolutions available, with 1/8 rotation major sub tensions and 4 sub-sub tensions between each major sub tensions. The range of adjustment is much larger than needed to get the barrel into and out of phase with the harmonic.frequency. I have found that at about 70% of the range between the tightest group adjustments, I get two separate groups just as you did, slightly offset from each other. I have the tuner w/o shroud on my Kral Nemesis in .25. Again, this device will not fix bad tune, bad technique or bad breath. It would be easy to loose the significance of the adjustments in the noise of the data if one was not careful in their methodology.
Your results do prove that barrel tuners do something to change pellet impact. This also suggests that adding other accessories to a rifle can do the same thing. Adding or reducing the weight of the rifle will move pellet impact. The support position and weight of accessories like bipods affect pellet impact. Barrel length, barrels being more or less rigid. Scope alignment and everything you change can do the same thing a tuner does. The one and only thing a tuner provides is being able to adjust the impact of the pellet slightly. If that is important to the shooter it is worth the money to use one. 🔍🥂🔎🎅
...and to be able to adjust that movement with measurable precision. The difference between the FX Tuner and just adding on a muzzle accessory is the ability to control the changes that it causes.
those bisley pellets (H&N) .177 in my HW80 knock an egg off a post at 65 yds every shot. the desire for a two grand PCP although great is now not quite as strong haha
The problem with PCPs is not so much the money you spend on the rest of the kit to support them - it's all the other PCPs that you end up buying because, now, you already have support equipment :) ...don't ask me how I know this LOL! Cheers!
Thanks for the video Giles, watching this while eating my Christmas breakfast. Your comment about PCP's out shooting us was the stand out thing for me. Like D Forr I'll just buy some more pellets and keep practicing.
Thankyou for this....this was really enlightening and entertaining to boot. Loved your delivery and your elaboration. Merry Christmas to you and yours and a very happy new year.
Hmmm, would this make a difference on a springer? I'm sure the spring and piston twanging away in a rifle will cause plenty of resonance. All the best to you and yours Giles
I have the shroud and tuner on a MKII impact FAC. It absolutely makes a difference, I could tune my rifle before but this allows me to set a speed and tune to the pellet. This seems to be what a lot of people don't see. My gun shot great using the pellet and speed the gun would allow. Now I can choose what and how fast..Thanks for taking the time! Love the channel.
Too bad that once again FX has announced something and still can't get it into the hands of those of us that want it, have paid for it and have waited all year to get it. DON"T announce a new product to see what kind of interest you will have before you can produce it in quantity and have it ready to go.
You need to velocity tune to a point of known or observed projectile stability AND to a tight velocity spread - THEN you harmonically tune. They are all different steps.
there are so many variations possible with prechamber pressure, hammer adjust, valve adjust, slug or pellets used, etc etc... addung the harmonic tuner just add anither variation and finding the best combination is a long long exoeriment ... so sad we have the 7.5 joule restriction here in germany
with my M3 already weighing over 12 pounds, I'll pass. I wouldn't mind trying one if it was small and made from a 3d printer though. Thank you for the video. :) The carbon fiber sleeve made a huge difference for me however.
Happy Christmas F...45. If they created using a 3D printer... you loose the effectiveness because of being light weight, and isn't it the added weight that helps to dampen the unwanted vibration? My Crown Gen1 with a 600mm barrel in .25 is amazing long which puts lots of weight out front. Now if some bright blok were to bring that metal tuner back near the block.... then maybe but I'm not sure that the types of plastic that get used in 3D printers will do the job no matter where they.put them. I'd be interested in your thoughts Oh yes, I live across the pond so my Crown is high power. If we are talking sub 12ft lbs... the plastic 3D printer types may work. Anyway, Santa is knocking on the roof tops so I had better bugger off... hope my ''Brit'' was used correctly. Merry Christmas my friend and a blessed New Year.
Awesome video Giles. I love your engineering based videos and as a recent convert to air gunning (last 2 yrs) find them really interesting and informative. Well, I’m up early on Christmas morning and Santa didn’t bring me an FX but he did bring an RM8 so I’m happy. Merry Christmas all 🎄
I think that expression relates to musical 'bows' for violins etc.., the archery related phrase is 'another arrow in my quiver' as two or more strings on an archer's bow would be a bit of a mess to try and shoot, spare strings are kept separately in a dry place. Sorry I've done bit of archery over the years but I know very little about string instruments apart from they tend to wear out bow strings a lot! LOL.
Writing this comment before I've even watched the video just to be the first, just one thing Giles, where the hell you been man we can't go this long and survive, 😂 lol, great 👍 to see you,atb to you and your family atb Dave

Matt Dubber made a fantastic video several years ago about barrel harmonics to explain the physics for anyone that is interested.

You hit this one scientifically - top marks.
A sincere thank you for all the effort you put in Giles.
It does NOT go un noticed.
Thank you.

John Whiscombe did this years ago on his recoil less springers....

Barrel tuners or not , watching your videos is always a pleasantly entertaining. Thank you for sharing Giles! 👍 Greetings from Texas
Thank you for this information. Excellent presentation that assisted me on upcoming build.
i had forgotten that you did videos anymore, welcome back to the video channels
Fantastic info and demonstration mate, nice experiment 👍 really enjoyed this Video as always 👍

Happy Christmas to you and yours. Thank you for your great videos.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family, Giles. greetz from the Netherlands!!!
They work on centerfire rifles. I have the SIMMS Navcom version on 2 of mine and they definitely tune out harmonics and shrink groups.

Nice to see You after a long time....nice vid
greetings from Czech😁👍
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Always informative and interesting, thanks for your input. I’ve been thinking of getting the barrel tuner. I’m still on the fence about it.
Never tried archery then Giles? LOL is another arrow in my quiver, cheers for the video very interesting!
You are the best. Good video.
Giles, Merry Christmas to you and your family!!! Greetings from Norway
Merry Christmas from Philippines
Merry Christmas
Highly interesting vids, good job, merry xmas from Chile
Great video, the question is do i need to tune the airgun first before installing this kit then tune it again with it or not ? Thnx

You could measure harmonics/ vibration with a smart phone app
👍 merry Christmas & a happy new year for 2022
Did you say we can not get JSB pellets in UK any more?
happy new year!
Merry christmas
What would the results be if a moderator like a hugget or donnyfl were used instead of the tuner. It adds weight, and reduces turbulence .
Still undecided !
Awesome merry Christmas ⛄🌲
you are alive? Nice video
Merry Christmas Santa Giles ! Don't forget to slip a new scope in my wife's stockings! Please
What the hell happened to j s b pellets? And have you horded eny?
what do you mean you can't get JSB in the UK anymore?????

will a barrel band work like a tuner. I've go an FX bullpup standard. can I use 2 barrel bands and is there an advantage or is it a waste of 35$

happy christmas giles have a brandy or 2
Como faço pra compra uma carabina dessa aquí no Brasil
Can get it 4 the BSA r10
What did it shoot without the tuner
Merrry Xmas
so have you set it up where us Americans can order products from you??
Adds weight to your gun, lessens the weight of your wallet haha
If only harmonics were so simple.
👍
I wish we can buy from india
I for the life of me can not figure out why FX will not put out à slug liner, slugs or à harmonic tuner for the .357. 😡
