- On April 30th 2024, I had the privilege to see the first preview of the brand new musical Death Becomes Her. The show is having it's Pre-Broadway Tryout in Chicago, Illinois at the Cadillac Palace Theatre.
The show stars Megan Hilty (Wicked, 9 to 5, SMASH) as Madeline Ashton, Jennifer Simard (Once Upon A One More Time, Company) as Helen Sharp, Christopher Sieber (The Prom, Matilda, Shrek) as Ernest Menville, and Michelle Williams (Destiny's Child) as Viola Van Horn.
Thanks for watching this vlog and review. I hope you enjoyed!

This was perfect, just what I needed to know. Cant wait to see it! Thank you handsome! 😘
I saw it last night and LOVED it. I agree with pretty much everything you said. we stage doored and got to say hi to Christopher and most of the ensemble but none of the ladies, we were hoping for Megan too (it was the last show of the week so we figured they were exhausted but I’m wondering if they’re just not stage dooring ever)
I really hope they work out the little kinks and make it to Broadway and it finally gets Megan her Tony and the praise she (and Jennifer) deserves.
Another show based on another IP, it might not have a chance at the tonys
Saw it Friday and loved it! Jennifer Simgard was a scene stealer. The special effects need work, but enjoyed the overall show so much.
Saw the matinee yesterday. It was good. Everyone seems to be settling into their roles. The ensemble was especially good. The script, the designs, the staging, and the actors are all great. The thing that needs work is the score. They need a much better ending to Act 1 and a whole new 11 o'clock number. Has good potential but not ready for Broadway yet.
I loved the musical so much!!! My Mom & I were laughing our asses off!
Thanks for the review! I’m seeing it Wednesday…hoping it’s in better shape than Devil Wears Prada was last year and like you said, they do the work while it’s here.
As someone who saw The Devil Wears Prada three times in 2022, I can safely say that Death Becomes Her is miles above it in every aspect of the production
Great review! Thank you so much!
Thanks for watching!
Off topic but I noticed the Wonderland poster in the background. I am that odd person who loves most of what Frank Wildhorn does (I know, a minority), but I think that show had some lovely songs in it, especially Home and Off With Their Heads. What did you think about it?.
Nice review, I'm a big fan of the movie, it's gotta be interesting to see aspect of the delete scenes puts in the musical, I gotta say I'm such a fan of the performances of Goldie, Meryl and Bruce that it would be hard for me to see different faces for the roles. Overall it looks like a good project, thanks for sharing.
I was watching videos of the deleted scenes that a TH-camr has compiled using the shooting script and the musical incorporated some of Viola’s backstory regarding her original vision for the use of the potion. In terms of cast you have nothing to worry about. The three leads are some of Broadways best. Much like The Cher Show having Stephanie J. Block.
12:42 - This role needs to be expanded! Was disappointed when the character disappears halfway through the first act!
You have a wonderful smile. I love your energy!
Thank you so much!!
It was great, very funny, very campy. The score was… generic? I kept thinking this sounds like The Producers, or this sounds like Spamalot. It’s not bad, it’s serviceable but I don’t think the composer is winning any awards for it.
I don’t want to say much more because I saw the show in its first week of previews and most of the things that didn’t work will be fixed, but also, it was really funny, really well acted and the book is fantastic. I hope they buff out the second act before the transfer and I’m sure it’ll be a hit.
Great review! 👏 AND you're adorable! 💕
Thank you!! 😊
I saw Jennifer in Once Upon A One More Time and she delivered in that Coolidge way too lol (I thought)
Hey, at least I know I’m not crazy! 😂
I saw OUAOMT in DC with Emily Skinner as the stepmother
@@SalRocha me too. I lived in MD at the time.
@@gareedwards I wast visiting my friends when they lived in Port Republic, MD. We got a super great offer for front row seats. We all hated it and the three of us love Miss. Spears!
@@SalRocha knowing it really had nothing to do with her I had an open head and heart. I liked a few of the orchestrations.
Saw it last night in Chicago at the Cadillac! I. LOVED. IT!!! I have never seen the movie before and did zero research beforehand. I read the playbill before it started and saw Megan Hiltys name and i'm like wait, WHAT?!!?!? and then saw michele williams and i'm like ok who's punking me and why arent they in the Broadway version of it vs the traveling :))) Now I know; tks interwebs! Soooo...I haven't laughed this hard the whole way through a show maybe ever?? Megan's character is like a cross between Karen Walker, Jack McFarland and Nathan Lane's over the top, whitty, sassy, hilarious characters. Everything in the show was sooooo extra and totally perfect! The only thing I noticed is that "Ernest" flubbed a couple of lines and they couldn't really get the curtain to fall on Michele Williams castles door either time but the adlibs around the stagehand fixing it were hilarious!
I'm telling you...I'd go watch it at least two more times and not get tired of it. The first act did seem a little long but I didn't realize that until they announced intermissions. It was nonstop amazing dialogue and songs.
Sal, when you talked about Jennifer's voice being like jennifer coolidge I know what you mean but I can't tell you HOW MANY FILTHY RICH OLDER LADIES sound just like that! I was actually thinking how brilliant she was for doing that...not just with spoken words but with her singing vocals as well. Its like she had to manufacture this new over the top rich lady voice to replace her original book writer one!! :)
This show for SURE entertains and the dancing is sexy and the music styles hit the 70,80s and 90s in a perfect way. This better make it to broadway because its super entertaining and hilarious!!
How lively the eyebrows are, where did u get it done 🥸
did you go see the DEVIL WORE PRADA when it was in CHICARGO??????SAW that it is now opening in London.....before coming to NYC.....
be interesting to see if they replace some of the main actors??????? and to see how it changes on tour.......
Oh…. I saw it three times while it was in Chicago. To quote the Wendy Williams documentary “What A Mess”. However, I was never bored for a second watching it! Im hopeful for the London production. Vanessa Williams sounds like a great choice for Miranda and Jerry Mitchell’s direction is bound to be a better fit for the material. But I can’t imagine anything saving that phoned-in score from Mister Elton and also the fact the the real devil of the story is not Miranda but Andy’s horrible friends.
@@SalRocha hope they have fixed it......the big draw is V. .Williams.......maybe she can pull it off
The entire creative team (aside from Elton John) was fired after the disastrous Chicago run of THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA and they’re basically starting from scratch - new book, new costumes, new set design, entirely new cast. Sure some of the same songs already written will be used but this London production is an entirely new production with zero resemblance of what was seen in Chicago. The producers wish to erase that Chicago run from the Universe.
finally the previews are out :)
Glad I could get a video out about the show!
Just saw it tonight and loved it. The music served the story but I none of them was catchy to me. Boop! had songs I'm still singing. They have already changed a few things you mentioned. You can tell they are finding the flow. I agree with how you said Michele Williams hasn't found her character yet. But she sounds great. Would love a follow up video of you with what changes you see when you see it again.
I was there too it was such a fantastic show! I would like yo know what changes are being made that you're hearing about, i tried looking it up on Reddit and Broadwayworld but couldn't find anything
Here’s a link to the thread on Broadway Worlds’s Message Board forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.php?thread=1156130
Great review thanks, can tell you love the original film!
Thanks for watching! I love this movie so much!
Nope, Jennifer Simard always has the Jennifer Coolidge sound, she did it for Once Upon A One More Time too... I was like, she's basically the Jennifer Coolidge of Theater ahahaha.
So. What kind of Merch do they have?
I looked at it's available to buy on the deathbecomesher musical website !
Shirts, a magnet, tote bag, pins. Pretty much standard merch items. But, they do look nice.
@@SalRocha Yep. We just got back from the show. As I collect keychains, I was disappointed that there were none. Almost got a mug, but we've little room in the cupboard.
@@chuckoneill2023 I was at the show tonight too! That set mishap after “I’m Ernest Menville, Damn It” was crazy!
Great review Sal! I loved the day one preview of the show too! Can’t wait to see the official opening day in a couple weeks! (Are you going?)
I totally missed that the second number was “gaze” 😂 Either way, it was super gay and fabulous!!
I’m so happy that the first-day preview for this was amazing, as well as Boop! Last November. Totally makes up for Prada!
BTW I’m so jealous you have a signed pre-Broadway Cher poster! I saw that 5 times that month and never got mine signed! :)
I wish I could go to the opening night. However, I’ll be in New York visiting my friend for her Birthday. I will try to go to the closing performance though. Actually, as I’m writing this comment I’m headed into the city to see the show again because I won the lottery!
@@SalRocha How was it second time around? Did they make any big changes? So excited to see it again in 2 weeks!!
It’s weird you mentioned Mean Girls bus when I saw it in DC previews it was like a large spandex flag the ran on from off stage.
I wanna see your video about the new Shakira's album!
We're going tomorrow!!
We've gotten to see a few Chicago try-outs (and missed a couple. Wish I'd gotten to see Victor/Victoria or The Producers with original casts).
We saw (no particular order) Tootsie, Pretty Woman, Spamalot, Sponge Bob. Probably a couple others.
I’ve gotten to see the Chicago Pre-Broadway tryouts of Big Fish, Bring It On, The Last Ship, Pretty Woman, On Your Feet, The Cher Show, SpongeBob, Boop, The Devil Wears Prada, A Wonderful World, and The Notebook. I had a blast at all of them!
when's the JLO album journey?
Maybe in the future!
Kaleigh Cronin (the Ensemble girl next to Michelle on her right (7:52) and appears in the plad pants at stage door (9:03 and 9:12))!!!! The sweetest!!! Some of you might recognize her from your childhood. Also in that same era as Michelle for all the 90's and early 00's nerds...... Kaleigh got her start as a 2-year cast member on the PBS Kids show ZOOM (Seasons 3 and 4). So amazing to continue to see her career skyrocket on the Great Bright Way!!!
Thanks for bringing that your our attention!
I’m so curious if there are any celebrity cameos like the movie of who took the potion: Garbo? Marilyn? Elvis? James Dean? Morrison?
No, just Elvis. It’s a crime that there’s no Marilyn considering Megan’s history with Miss Monroe!
@@SalRocha I was wondering if they would have put new stars too like Amy Winehouse and others who’ve passed since the 1992 movie…but as I typed it I realize they would have had a backlash. Those cameos were so cool in the movie though.
Sound like it's another Mrs Doubtfire, Back to The Future etc. Not a great musical but amazing play. Especially BttF, most songs are bad and it would be better without them.
I feel like recently there’s not much musical with good music in it
I thought Jenifer reminded me of Christine Ebersol
Your smile is wonderful 😊❤
😊 thank you
@@SalRocha 😉
You should be Eddie Munster for Halloween.
