Awesome update Charlie! So informative and professional. Some amazing views of the layout and the usual warts and all roundup. Thanks mate gave me a real lift at the end of a crap two weeks!.....
Like many, I’d guess, I have been trying to fettle an ageing layout but the truth is the basics just weren’t good enough when I started. I have decided that it is time to start again. Boards can be reused but I have learned that squeezing more into a space is not a good idea. Seeing the quality on Chadwick (and some other great YT layouts that didn’t get my vote) has convinced me that starting fresh is the right move. Thanks for the inspiration!
I am sure yu are right and applaud your decision to start again. If I were younger (I am 84) I would do the same but no longer have the time. As Charlie points out, this still does not solve all the problems and I still have some stretches of track and pointwork that cause problems despite having no obvious signs of poor design or workmanship.
I realise that the helixes are only there to serve the purpose of raising the trains to landscape level and when you have completed your model railway they won't be seen, but watching trains run up and down them is rather mesmerising. I take my hat off to you, quite a feat of construction, electronics and digital work. Rather amazing.
Many thanks for your comments peers. However, the Helix may still be visual, although at times I may cover them with a soundproof curtain. Regards Charles
You got my vote Charlie. The only TH-camr making professional, interesting and informative content without commercial bias towards a company’s products or crass self-promotion. Love your work!
Yours must be one of the most informative and entertaining TH-cam channels for railway modellers. I really look forward to each episode. Thank you for doing such a sterling job.
I totally agree, I'm not even a modeller these these days but I love this channel and never ever miss an episode. Always something interesting going on and I love the 'tongue in cheek' attitude we get.
I really enjoyed that running session as I am sure you did. Thank you for leaving the run-away camera wagon in and your quick response. Thanks again Charlie for the entertainment and advice. Martin. (Thailand)
Great to see the layout actually running - a terrific achievement. At the end however you touch on issues of reliability and couplings. My layout is of similar complexity to Chadwick but is single track with a 70' long run (excluding the helix) but all compressed into a 10' x 5" scenic section plus a single 4'6" dia. helix board. Tight curves and a veritable switchback of gradients are the order of the day. It has taken me 18 months since the track and wiring was completed to reach a stage where 21 of my normally active 30 trains can be relied upon to run trouble free and pass the "leave and get a coffee" test. These are mostly hauled by early diesels with so far only 7 of my steam hauled trains passing the test. The remaining 9 less reliable trains are mainly steam hauled. I have already discarded as beyond redemption at least 9 steam locos (and countless coaches and wagons) but am persevering with the rest. Apparently random uncoupling remains a problem as of course does derailment. Strangely, a 9f 2-10-0, a 28xx 2-8-0 and a 30xx 2-8-0 are among the reliable units even hauling 8' long trains, while the small ex-Southern 0-4-4 tanks have had to be abandoned even with only an autocoach. It would be interesting to learn in some future Chadwick report how Charlie tacles this problem. My layout is perhaps extreme, but most subscribers must suffer from similar problems to some degree.
What an excellent comment Graham. I feel that I’m walking in your shadow, or perhaps we are just on parallel paths of achievement. However, my endeavours are only just beginning, wish me luck, regards Charlie
I have just stumbled upon this video whilst on an extended holiday in Andalusia. What a brilliant way to spend half an hour! I’ll now be subscribing and catching up on all of your previous work. Great subject and superb presentation...... a vote for the awards has now been submitted!
Hello , Charlie. Greetings from Sarasota Florida USA . I throughly enjoy your videos. I don't have the patience or the knowledge to ever be able to do anything close to your layout . So it's just a matter of thanking you for your imagination and skill.
A great pleasure to see your update Charlie. Most impressive. I have taken some inspiration from it for my own layout which is about 85% complete. All best wishes, Dave
Charlie, what can I say, brilliant does not do your channel justice, you have become a 'trustworthy' (with all that implies) companion in these interesting times, honest, un-encumbered reviews, if it means you get a free ticket at Milton Keynes then the least I can do is vote for the channel. more power to you buddy. regards V
Happy to finally see your trains running around in a full circle. It was fun to watch. My channel is coming along slowly. Thank you for some of the advice you gave me a few years ago
I was always told “honesty is the best policy”. And to me this is the best virtue of your exceptional efforts and modelling skills. Of course I have voted for you as no one else comes close. Thanks for a great year and here’s to the next year. Regards Carl.
Another useful video Charlie. First thing to say probably must be how great it is to see trains running. The Puillman really was a beautiful train although I am sad to say I never saw one. Your camera angles really do bring the trains to life for people like me. The time and effort (and money) you have invested has brought great results and I imagine you must be pleased. Thanks again for sharing it Charlie.
Lots of fantastic progress here Charlie. All going very smoothly without those pesky issues. Very modern and hi-tech which is something to aspire to for lots of us..Regards, Chris
Excellent update. Fun to see things running as they ought to. Cameras are a vexation to all--and if not batteries, then other issues (I prefer batteries, they are simple). Every so often, I'll pop over to some of the G-Scale outdoor layout channels. I do my best to not remember what that lot costs, engines or rolling stock . . . I know that's a great landmark for you, and I'm just as proud for you as if I had done the work myself!! Can't wait to see what comes next! Thank you for taking me on this journey with you!
Just voted! Living in the US my votes went like this: no preference, no preference..... no preference, Chadwick Model Railway ! Good luck, Charlie!! Truly the best
Nice video Charlie nice to see stuff running too. I also want to thank you for your recommendations for the wiring connectors an ferrules and crimping tools. I have just completed wiring my new layout build plus rewired half my fiddle yard, I extended all the sidings by 12”. The wiring was so much easier than soldering to tag strips and looks more professional, thanks again for that. Also the votes in for you. Chris.
Have to admit that there a few 'tubers who deserved a vote. Chadwick got it mainly because it is one I look forward to the most regardless of the subject of the video and I don't even have a train layout!
Crickey you are an influencer ! Nice updated layout Well done Charlie. Left you a note on another video of yours. Great work and must be that time of year. I'm looking to make a small expansion too 👍
Hi Charlie, it was great to see a running session. I’ve already voted for you, a bit of a no brainer really, as you were one of my first TH-camrs I started watching.
Hi Charlie. Another great video and nice to see your trains running at this stage. Like many others watching you build this layout, it gives us modelers inspiration and fun to watch. You'll certainly get my vote too!
Very entertaining, as always, thank you. This was an interesting episode, much planning and future work, with trains running too. I look forward to your channel every time and am never disappointed.
Hi Charlie. Firstly congratulations on your nomination. The progress you have made on your layout must be extremely satisfying, and it is great to see trains running. When all your trackwork is completed do you propose to conceal the helixes in some form. Thanks for an interesting video. Greg
We'll Charlie, now for the fun, I've been watching since just before you started this layout. Your ," What could go wrong ", has entertained be immensely. It's gotten me started on projects I may not have tried and helped me get through them. Your tenacity in doing it right the first time has inspired me to slow down and " do it right" has been a God send. Now I can share in your enjoyment and ruunnnn trains. Can't wait for the rest of the
Another gem of a video, Charlie, and thanks for your efforts. Regarding Kadees, my layout is an end to end, fiddle yard to station, so my freight stock has a number 18 at the western end and a 19 at the eastern. I found 18 at both ends was too close in some circumstances, while 19 at both ends was no improvement on hook and bar types. 18/19 is a reasonable compromise.
Hi Charlie 👍 great update really enjoyed it. Just one thing about your comment about testing trains at shows. As a member of the Warley club we have a test track at the show each year that’s free for anyone wanting to test a purchase before they leave the show. This year we have been making a layout for Hornby called Margate Warren and if any of your viewers purchase a loco at the show I will be happy to test it for them at the show. Keep safe and well Andy
@@ChadwickModelRailway Hi Charlie good point the layout is DC I’m not sure about the test track. What I can do if someone needs to test a DCC loco they can speak to someone at the Warley stand and we can organise it for them 👍
Excellent as always Charlie, I will get voting! Must agree about Hornby and Bachmann prices, ridiculously expensive. A DCC sound loco and a rake of coaches can be in excess of some £700.00!!!. Bought quite a few Dapol recently, Excellent value for money. Accurascale locomotives also seem decently priced.
Brilliant work with the layout Mate! As usual, awaiting more updates on it. Several Trains running in the background look amazing too. Once this is complete, it will be a masterpiece!!
Another great video Charlie. It's amazing how much progress you've made with the layout. I hope you'll find time in a future episode to show us more about train controller; how you set up routes or time tables and how it interacts with something that you are doing manually. One possible error in your routing crops up at about @17:59 when the freight train goes through Chadwick Parkway Station and takes the line next to the platform rather than using the "fast" line through the middle.
You make an excellent point Lee, I was thinking that the freight train wood stop to allow the HST to pass straight through. Before I make the TrainController video I just need to become a little more knowledgable. Take care mate. Regards Charlie
@@ChadwickModelRailway Shouldn't Lee appear on one of your videos at some point? Given that he is the Architect of the layout in no small part. Perhaps a bit of track design using Any Rail, and of course pitfalls to avoid when using it. It's fairly 'easy to drive', but as usual the 5% of things people don't know how to use properly are usually 95% of the pain.
I use a HAWK EYE, Fire Fly. Track camera to inspect the track with, to occasionally check the joints for kinking and condition in areas where the track is covered. I found the same problem as you have experienced with Kadees, so I use a section of track on a board (consisting of 3 set track 18 rad curves) which is used specifically for testing which Kadees I require for everything. Interestingly, you have decided to do the same as I decided about 3 months ago, I also no longer purchase Hornby or Bachmann made locomotives or rolling stock. The prices are unforgivingly extortionate. Again like yourself, I had to do a hell of a lot of work on my coaches with kinematic couplings to get them to run, pull, push and go up and down gradients. Specifically Pullman coaches. Thank you once again for a very well put together quality video. I didn't plan for block detection when I built my layout so unfortunately, automation is not really something I can use.
Absolutely fantastic to see several trains all running well at the same time Charlie. I’ve been with you throughout your build and am immensely impressed with how it’s turned out. Thanks for inspiring me to start my own. Keep up the good work sir 👍👍

You’re dead right Graham. Sometimes there is a strange incompatibility between track and rolling stock that just can’t be fixed. Regards Charlie

Thanks Charlie, I could look at the train operating section of that video for hours and not get any modelling done...😆
Hopefully more to come. Stay safe, regards Charlie
Wow, Charlie Sir. Hats off to you, this is absolutely awesome! Yep, I have been watching you build this "new" layout from day one.
That’s great news, I’m so pleased you enjoyed my railway journey. Regards Charlie

Thanks Paul , I’m so pleased you could join me on my railway journey.
Can't wait for the rest of the
What a truly heartwarming comment Bob. It’s great that you can join me on my railway journey. Regards Charlie

Thanks Sonny, you’re too kind, regards Charlie
Voted for you Charlie!
Thanks Peter, you’re most kind. Regards Charlie
How do you say Peter, a great compromise. Stay safe mate, regards Charlie
Keep safe and well
Andy
Thanks Andy, is that a DCC facility or just DC? Regards Charlie
I think you’re dead right David, accurascale is where my money is going. Regards Charlie
Outstanding Charlie cast my vote fingers crossed and best of luck mate your lay out and how to’s are great 🚂🚂🚂🚂
Thanks Adam, that’s very kind of you, stay safe, regards Charlie
Looking fantastic Charlie, all your hard work, planning and dare I say jiggling is now coming to fruition. Congratulations. Take care Eddy xx
Thanks Eddy , I’m so pleased you could join me on my railway journey. Regards Charlie
Great to see them there trains a running! Well done on the progress. Another great video! Vote cast!
Thanks Gavin, that’s most kind. Regards Charlie
Brilliant work with the layout Mate! As usual, awaiting more updates on it. Several Trains running in the background look amazing too. Once this is complete, it will be a masterpiece!!
Thanks AS, and thanks for joining me on my railway journey. Regards Charlie
An excellent suggestion Kelly paws. Regards Charlie
Many thanks for your excellent comment Sam. However, I am interested on how you got those Pullman coaches to run properly. Regards Charlie
Absolutely fantastic to see several trains all running well at the same time Charlie. I’ve been with you throughout your build and am immensely impressed with how it’s turned out. Thanks for inspiring me to start my own. Keep up the good work sir 👍👍
What a heartwarming comment Kevin, you’re too kind mate. Regards Charlie
Excellent video Charlie! Lovely to see it all joined up and running! Definitely voting for you! 👌
Thanks Matthew, that’s most kind of you. Regards Charlie
Fantastic progress Charlie. I bet it feels highly rewarding to have the layout running.
Yes it was very rewarding reaching that milestone. Regards Charlie
Brilliant update mate, and my vote has been done 🙂🙂
