Who knew a random discovery of the manga Hikaru No Go at the library would highlight a big part of my life. I learned to play Go when I was 14 because of this anime. Shortly after, my close friend gave me as a birthday present a Goban. I brought it everywhere with me. It was crazy the crowd that would gather around whenever I would start playing with friends. They were just so curious. It was a good way to bond and make friends. After two long years of self-teaching and playing, I somewhat reached 10kyu on KGS (the furthest I got was 8k but I am sure I am just a 13k or something). I was so shocked when some random guy told me he reached that within two months only by having someone mentor him. Good times... now I am rewatching the anime at work, it helps me pass the time... now I am right when the "tragedy" happens. Experiencing the same intensity as I did when I first watched the series. I would love to see a spin-off or a continuation someday. There is a Chinese live-action adaptation that came out recently so there is hope.
I am really bad at Go or games like this in general, but this anime still got me into learning it. And I want a Goban of my own so bad but ig I'd never get it
I remember when I turned 14, my best friend at the time bought me a foldable wooden Goban. I brought it with me everywhere I went and a lot of people would gather around to watch my friends and I play. They were so intrigued and curious. I also brought it to the temple where I practiced Kung Fu and all the students were so distracted by it that our teacher banned us from playing it. He thought we were doing some sort of gambling while playing. You don't have to be good at this sort of thing. Other than Go I don't play anything else. I taught myself to play by learning from the internet. There was no TH-cam at the time so I had to fetch my learning from really basic websites with poor flash animations. It took me nearly 2 years to get to 14 Kyu. Only later on did I realize that my progress was rather slow... some dude on KGS told me he reached that within 2 months with just a little bit of mentoring. I think from 30k to 15k it's really just knowing the basic rules, then from 15k to 10k you start to refine your techniques, and then from then onward you start developing and refining the style you chose for yourself. Around 16-13k I started teaching my friends and then we eventually made a team to play in an online competition for beginners on KGS. It was nothing serious but it was a big event for us kids. Learning Go by myself was a slow and gradual process but it was very rewarding. I was crazy about it so I just kept at it and eventually made it to 8k (by KGS standards, which is probably not accurate). Since I am an intuitive thinker, one trick I used to climb the levels was to speed watch replays from some users on KGS while listening to HNG soundtracks. I would just do it over and over until what I saw became muscle memory. Then I would just play speed games where I was forced to play by instinct and rhythm (my HNG tracks). The moves just came to me and while some were good some were just plain terrible. But then I would rewatch my games. I always learned something new from my own moves. You can say that I was my own teacher and student at the same time. It was truly a cool and memorable era.
Composer Wakakusa Kei thank you.
Genial!
This music played while showing people playing Go with so much focus. You can feel the passion for Go radiating in the room. That's what great of Hikaru no Go, not just the MC, but all people looked determined as much. Too bad they just lack of plot armor, and fated to be a background character, lol.
