VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Meet Paul & Pat - Your Guides to Sustainable Living:
Hello! You're about to embark on a fascinating tour with Paul and Pat in their unique Earthship, a home that symbolizes their dedication to energy-efficient living. This eco-friendly sanctuary is built from recycled materials like rubber tires, tin cans, and glass bottles.
🏠 Understanding the Earthship Concept:
Step into "Earth's Nest," a structure that epitomizes long-term sustainability and can be extended as needed. The home features adobe-colored concrete floors and darker walls, specifically designed to absorb and retain heat. Thermal windows and "warm windows" curtains effectively conserve energy.
🔥 Experience the Cozy Living Space:
In the heart of their Earthship, you'll find a living area centered around a hand-built fireplace. This cozy space, showing signs of loving use, is adorned with hand-rot ironwork and a natural, rustic aesthetic.
🌱 Journey to Earthship Living:
Paul will recount his transition from the Marine Corps to California and eventually to building an Earthship. Pat's path, from suburban life to joining an intentional community, shaped her vision for a sustainable lifestyle.
🔨 Explore the Innovative Kitchen:
Discover their kitchen, designed to be both compact and functional, complete with a 24-inch wide stove and tailor-made cabinets. Notice the adjustable storage and a cutting board with a removable tray. A unique touch is a 100-year-old necklace from Pat's grandmother, a focal point in the kitchen.
🛌 Relax in the Cozy Bedroom:
The bedroom, though small, is filled with warmth and character. Handcrafted elements, like the headboard made from a repurposed door, and unique paintings add charm to the intimate space.
💧 Sustainable Bathroom Design:
In the bathroom, you'll see walls built with 15-inch diameter rim tires, forming a curve typical of Earthship design. The custom-made solid surface countertop and standard tiles enhance the room's aesthetics, while a separate toilet alcove maintains hygiene and comfort.
💰 Understanding Cost-Effective Living:
Learn about their financial journey, with detailed records of expenses, including $55 monthly for propane, $50 for water, and $40 for electricity. The land, spanning 5.2 acres, was purchased for $42,500, with materials costing between $180,000 and $200,000.
🌿 Pat's Art Room & Solar Power:
Pat's art room serves as a creative space and a cozy retreat. The home is powered by photovoltaic (PV) panels, with grid power as an emergency backup, ensuring a seamless off-grid experience.
📚 Embracing Change & Challenge:
Paul and Pat encourage you not to fear change. Focus on a common goal and remember that it's never too late to start a new journey. They began this project in their 40s and 50s, proving age is no barrier to sustainable living.

Oh no worries! It happens to the best of us 😅
Beautiful home.
Earthships are amazing.
What is the type of curtains that you have?
Thank you :)
Perhaps I missed it in the story, but where is this? So beautiful!
I assume it's somewhere near Durango Colorado.
@@purserconsulting Thanks!
I want to retire in an Earthship. Where does one source all the tires? Is the permitting the same as for a traditionally built home?
I'm sure it varies highly according to local governments.
The closer you are to a large city, the less relaxed the permitting is.
❤
Do you know if any other earthship homes have had problems with the walls compressing over time? Has there been any discussion to minimize the problem?
That doesn't seem to be a common complaint. The soil is usually quite hard and compacted inside the tires so that the tires are hard as bricks!
How do you get a permit to do something like this? I know in Taos they had to get it zoned as a dump, but what about these one-offs in different places?
Great questions! To reach out to Paul & Pat directly you can check out their Facebook page: facebook.com/patricia.c.senecal.7 I'm sure they'd be happy to share more info. :)
Just because ur at 6k feet doesn't mean we'll will be deep
Nice home but it's not an earthship. It may be considered in the spirit of an earthship, but this build doesn't fulfill the 6 tenants an earthship is to provide to its inhabitants. Needs to be 100% off grid.
