I didn't know Cartier was the person who named Canada Facts I learned; Jacques Cartier, (born 1491, Saint-Malo, Brittany, France-died September 1, 1557, near Saint-Malo), French mariner, whose explorations of the Canadian coast and the St. Lawrence River (1534, 1535, 1541-42) laid the basis for later French claims to North America (see New France).
You know the part where they say Jacques Cartier went to look for the gold that exisisted in Saganag. I think the Indians just didn't want him around their tribe, because he was a stranger... an ousider... So they tried to communicated that there were better things else where. You really think the Indians knew what Gold was? I don't even think they had Gold to begin with. Jacques Cartier got suffeled around because they didn't know him and didn't want him around...
What they didn't mention here is he thought he found gold and diamonds on one of his trips and filled his ship and returned to France right away. Turned out to be useless fool's gold and quartz and that's when Duval was appointed captain of the next excursion
Professor Brunelle errors in her description when she states Cartier "...sails to the St. Lawrence Seaway...". What she means is the St. Lawrence River. The St. Lawrence Seaway is the series of locks, channels, and canals built in the twentieth-century to connect the St. Lawrence River to the Great Lakes.
how does one believe that map they show it looks to modern what the north coast line and west coast of Canada today in those early days..and can not read the names on the map either..
That is not Cartier's map, that certainly is too modern. Pick up "A History of Canada in Ten Maps", the auhor talks about Cartier's involvement in mapping eastern Canada in the 2nd chapter and a copy of a copy(?) of his map is included. It's a pretty awesome book I found it at the library. I imagine they just used that map for the purpose of accuracy!
