This was amazing coverage that encouraged many of us to take up competitive cycling, it was poetry. "... but for 171 young men it would be a place where they would dare to ask themselves the questions of greatness... this time for some the answers from their bodies would be no, no more" F'n Beautiful man!!!
Someone knows what is the song that plays in the background during Villard de Lans (16:48) footage? The music of the CBS footage of cycling races was compiled in some release in CD? I hope somebody can answer me!
I'm sure someone has replied to your question by now, all the music used by CBS Sports for TDF broadcasts were commercially available recordings, even if they had to be acquired out of the back of cycling magazines to obtain them.
@@yesroh Doing great - I see them all over now - guess all that work 20 years has paid off. I did get a request in early 2000's from Stephen Roche to send him the DVD's to his house in Monaco. That was pretty cool.
@@socalrider909 are you sure it was him? I show that I have a "Greg LeMond" subscribing to me, but all the silly jokes I added in might not be to his liking :) Have you seen the Phineas and Ferb cartoon? After I saw that, how he made fun of the 1987 shooting, I figured he was okay with laughing at himself. Greg did the voices and they repeatedly mocked him getting shot--soooo...
@@socalrider909 I was trying to make it more interesting for my non-cycling fan friend by adding a lot of humor. They did an interview after his stage 5 time trial win in 1989 and he said he phoned home and he could hear his son yelling, "Daddy won the race! Daddy won the race!" I wrote subscripts in my video that said, "His kid talking about Raul Alcala." Lots of silly things--I tried to create these personas--Greg, as the forgotten champ, was so desperate for attention that he started streaking, Roche was a heavy drinking Irishman, and Kelly talked like a dog--he just had a weird way of talking, a little like the Bob Dole character on SNL. And Fignon was transitioning to a woman. It was fun.
They don't talk about doping back then. Actually, I heard they weren't illegal back then and after Simpson died, they started to enforce drug rules. Some of the other broadcasts, including Liggett, mentioned the amphetamines.

Yeah, they have. It's been a long, long time. How you doing?
I believe this particular video was from my collection, but the US television coverage can be found all over the place.

Interesting that they didn't wait for Bernard, when Contador did the same too Schleck, everyone cried blue murder !
Phil Liggett seems to gloss over the fact Tom Simpson had amphetamines in his system and in his jersey on that day.
