Sir, what a delightful road test as I tuck into some McVitie's Boaster biscuits! Original wheel trims, wind up windows and just a glimpse of luxury with the AC button! Thank you!
Sir, we do like a nice pack of Boaster biscuits... Those wheel trims have been changed since I first filmed the car for the correct ones (the originals were stolen)!
Thank you! It is always nice to see a first generation Mégane, especially the rare saloon. The plastic steering wheel seems to be in very good condition considering all the miles. Regarding rear head restraints: Renault had to design such for Mégane's predecessor 19 after requests from dealerships and car byers in Sweden. The newly developed rear head restraints were then factory fitted as standard on all Renault 19 for the Swedish market, starting from model year 1991.
Yes, a very rare car over here, even when new! The seats and steering wheel have not been changed, and are in excellent condition. I have no doubt that in Sweden, these would have had rear head restraints as well, even on this trim.
My late parents owned an R reg Megane Scenic (1.6 8v) and then replaced it with a V reg Scenic (1.6 16v) I was very sad to see the latter get traded in for a newer mini MPV that I cannot talk about. Both were great cars. As a result I have a soft spot for these mark 1 Meganes. Optional air contitioning on a baser spec model that lacks a rev counter is slightly unusual.
Sir, the specification is most unusual, isn't it? The 16V is probably a bit better, but the 8V would have been OK as well. Thank you for your self-censorship, sir!
The Mégane was very popular wasn't it, sir? I never took to the design myself but this saloon is a bit more appealing to me than the hatch, and I can't deny the success of the model overall, particularly the Cynic...I mean the Scénic! Smashing tie, Mr. Lloyd.
The Mark I Mégane was quite popular over here, but the Scénic was even more popular. Cynic actually does sound quite similar to the French pronunciation, funnily enough.... Don't know how often I will wear the tie, sir.
There was a place that I worked at that leased company cars for us and I realised booted cars were way, way cheaper so I had a booted Astra MK2 and 3 plus a couple of Megane Classics and a booted Mondeo. When I asked the leasing company why were they cheaper I was told some motorists preferred a saloon and they were so rare they attracted a premium when auctioned so the sell on price was reflected in the lease cost at that time
Yes, Belmonts, Astra Saloons, Mondeo Saloons and Mégane Classics were always rarer, generally owned by a slightly older demographic who would keep them a long time. I also like saloons, and actually owned two at one time.
Very Nice Joseph my youngest son had a Megane RXE he loved it sadly it was in a car park and it was hit by a large runaway van and it was wrote off best regards Andy Allen.
@lloydvehicleconsulting A Mégane classic in Monaco spec with dark green metallic paint with a beige leather interior with wood, did such a creation ever exist?
Fun fact, Renaults of this era are terrible in flood water as the air intake is essentially at the gearbox level, not good news given current weather 😬

Good to see Mr Bill's Mégane Classic revisited Sir, I cannot believe it's got 160000 on the clock.
An excellent review as always Sir.
Yes, sir, lots and lots of miles, and ready for many more now that it has been restored. Thank you again for watching, Mr Watters!

Love an early megane classic or scenic. Very pleasant cars to look at.
Both are getting very rare now, sir, aren't they?
@ sadly yes
Nice. Perfect. I'd like a drive
It was most agreeable indeed, sir...

That is a shame, sir... They aren't bad, actually.
Lovely car and a real oddity in that spec, please see if you can find a Renault 19 Chamade too?
Sir, we would probably buy a Renault 19 Chamade if we came across a nice high specification one, but I have yet to see one in decades....
I wonder how many Renault 19 Chamde are left in the UK? I had a G reg 19 hatch 1.4 and it was quite a nice drive.
I can't imagine that it would be very many, sir... I would like to get a 19 Chamade on the channel, but finding one could be quite tricky.
The best optional extra is the Cornish flag on the boot.
You don't get much, do you?
@lloydvehicleconsulting It does seem sparse.
The RN Liberté was not exactly generously equipped...
I recall Renault claiming it had a bigger boot than the Ford Scorpio.
It may have been the case, sir, it is quite a large boot.

Ask Mr Bill, sir.

Not sure if Mr Bill has mentioned that issue before, sir...
