Mike I had my ALIF fusion 70 days ago, still have discomfort and some pain. The operation has been successful, so I need to be more patient to recover. Your video is heartwarming and makes me happy that you have recovered so well. Thank you for the video
Thank you so much for your honesty and positivity. We have an ALIF scheduled for tomorrow and even though we have one of the best surgeons, we are scared out of our minds but listening to your account truly helps and is calming. Glad you had a good and successful recovery!
Anthony Iati i need to have L5-s1 and 2 fusion and am nervous but it has to be done. I hope your surgery went well and your recovery is going very well. Take care!
Thank you for posting this. I am 6 weeks out of ALIF and PLIF. An excruciating experience, but one I simply had no other choice to have. You give me hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have been told by my surgeon that I am trying to do too much. I went back to work 2 weeks out and I do light chores around the house, feeding the dogs, etc. My mobility is severely limited at this point. Again, thank you!!
Thank you for sharing your experience as you progress. Sorry you've had to go through this, but relieved to hear you are feeling no pain now! 2.5 years is a very long for you to have had to struggle in pain and with your decision. I am glad it worked out for you. Thanls for saying we can write to you and that you'll respond. I am feeling very scared and confused by all the conflicting stories and advice from doctors, family members, friends, Internet and the more I hear the more confused I am. Yet I'm in excruciating pain 24/7, can't sleep, can't concentrate and feel depressed and despondent, yet do not know the next safe step to take. I'm so afraid of making the pain worse with surgery, but I can't live like this anymore. The pain is so intense that it makes me nauseous 24/7 and I've never felt so worried in my life. I dont want to be paralyzed or in constant nerve pain like this. I feel I may go crazy. Originally I was diagnosed with L4 bulging disc, L5 S1 herniation. 4 months of PT made my condition worsen. So they did an MRI. After that, I was referred to a surgeon. They did an xray and it was determined then, that in addition to the L4 L5 S1 issues, I also have Spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, and DDD. I was stunned and scared. They said fusion surgery with rods and screws to stabilize my spine is needed. But it might not work because it could make things worse and it could make pain more intense. What?? I could not believe my ears! I asked, How can a person make the best decision given these choices? They said frst they'll do a nerve block, but it will take 3 weeks to receive the block. The meds they provided (Ibuprofen. Then tramadol) didnt help relieve pain at all. Ice didn't help much. So I suffer in agonizing nerve pain every moment. Any advice or thoughts you could share would be so appreciated!!
I think you should get multiple opinions until you find a doctor you are comfortable with. The 4th doctor I talked to was the only one who was confident enough in what he was doing to recommend surgery and so I did it. You had many of the same symptoms as I did. I wasn't in constant agony but I was in pain every day when I bent over to do anything. Something like 60-80% of people feel less pain after the surgery. I liked those odds instead of 100% who don't get the surgery will always feel pain.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful response, Michael. I appreciate you taking the time to write back. You still feeling well? Hope so. Yes, even the surgeons don't seem to want to do surgery on a person under 50, yet they feel I'm 90% going to need it. But it's hard for me to feel confident when even they look worried. Know what I mean? If they could tell me I won't get worse, I'd go ahead with the surgery. But they say surgery could make me worse in later years. So exasperating. Did you ever have a nerve block? I'm super glad you had a successful outcome and thanks for giving me some hope! Thank you! Signed, trying to smile :) Ali

Hi Michael - your videos are such a blessing. My mother just had spinal fusion surgery on Aug. 1, 2018. And, she experienced so much of what you described. Her post-op appointment is this Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018 and she's been doing well in physical therapy and moving along, but she's experiencing some sort of brown fluid - not spinal fluid, per se - leaking from her back. Thank you for you video! I am going in for the same surgery on July 20. I am hoping for a similar outcome! Thanks for giving me hope I can reduce the never ending pain I feel now!
I'm at the 5 week mark. Unfortunetly I have a compromised immune system. Dr. stated it will tske me longer, plus during my surgery a torn nerve was discovered. I'm still hurting, it's hard to walk. Today after a month of waiting the VA finally called to set up my physical therapy. I'm looking forward to that. Thank you fot sharing your experience.
Thank you so much 3weeks post surgery l5 s1 identical to your video I'm 35 and was and still am scared but thanks to your video it gives me more hope some pain in surgery points but mostly nerve pain in right leg but every day is getting better thanks again
You have brought a little comfort to me. I will be going in for a alif/plif next month. I been 10 years in this condition. My life has pretty much been hell. Financial I can’t afford it. I struggle every day to get my self going. But my back is at a point that it’s either do or don’t walk again. I would appreciate you giving me some tips on the first course or if says. Of what to expect. I will be by myself. I know I can do it. But would like some tips if you can spare a minute. Thank you for your words Of Encouragement. I pray that all goes well with you. Thank you
Try to think positive as much as possible. Theres enough negativity already b/c of the fear and I was there as well. Call your doctor a lot if you need to just to hear them tell you to be patient b/c that's all they will say the first few months. And they are right.
@mikeylikey13 I'm considering the same surgery in a couple of months... saw your video and it was hopeful but this comment made me think twice... could you plz share what went wrong and when did you realise this?
Great video just watched your update... Man this gives me hope... I am going to push for my L5/S1 Fusion asap so I can get back to normal... so tired of being in pain just doing basic stuff around the house like washing a car or changing oil in a car, bringing in groceries or putting Christmas stuff in or out of an attic and having to lay in bed the rest of the day or next day because I over did it? Keep doing the videos and keep us updated... please
@@imveryhungry112 Had a revision on my original surgery at L4/L5 in April of 2023, they went in from the front this time. It seems to have helped but I am starting to believe some of my pain is and has always been from L5/S1 disc that was never addressed, so I am going to wait another 5 or 6 months and see if someone can clean up that disc without having a fusion. I guess time will tell where to move next.
I’m worried I will be on pain meds for the rest of my life so I’m scared to get the lumbar fusion I don’t take meds now and I’ve adjusted to my back limitations like I don’t jog can’t play b ball ect But I can walk around the mall My main concern is getting hooked on pills or even having to take them repeatedly months after surgery Thanks for your encouraging video
I am about to have this procedure done, front and back. I am tilted forward by the condition. Were you tilted forward? If so, are you able to stand up straight after the surgery? I hope you are doing well.Thank you very much.
Hi Michael and thank you for the great video. I think my case is close to yours before the surgery. I am 38 and have been suffering from Spondylolisthesis grade 1 for more than 10 years, and recently my pain got much worse with activity, especially that I used to play Basketball frequently. I don't want to stop my active lifestyle so I believe I might go with the fusion soon. One question please, did you have one level fusion or two levels? My doctor recommends a double fusion of L4 L5 S1 because the two lower discs are destroyed.
Yeah I hated not being able to run or basically work out at all b/c of the pain so I took the risk and am glad I did. I think we already have an edge b/c we are younger and athletes so our body will bounce back quicker. Don't worry it'll be fine.
Micheal thanks so much for your video and I'm glad to see your feeling better although sounds like the first weeks post op sound tough. I'm facing the same surgery and was wondering if you would be willing to talk to me?
@@imveryhungry112 He's right about finding a good doctor. I take 1800 mg of gabapentin, it helps the neuropathy enough to take it. He should have fused S1 L5 and L4. Now I'll get hardware out, And hope a triple fusion works next time. I knew in my gut I should have said no. He was angry when I said I'll let him know. He screamed "I'll fix your feet" hmm He lied. Those were the last words he said to me. I should have listened to my gut. 😮Oh well. It could always be worse.
Hi Mikey I'm writing to you from Barcelona, I'm glad to find your channel since I'm in the process of fixing l5-s1 and I'm also terrified. I have doubts if the time has come to do it since only my back hurts, although it is very disabling. I am 44 years old and I have been getting worse for 4 years. just tomorrow I have a visit with my neurologist to decide, and here I am desperately looking for information on the internet. did you have lower back pain? Has it improved you? Do you recommend surgery? I appreciate your video very much.
Hello no I don’t recommend it. I’d recommend you find someone that will do PRP or stem cell injections first before this surgery. I wish I’d never done it at such a young age.
I’m 9 weeks out and in a lot of pain and spasm. I have had the hell if 6 or more trips to the ER for extreme pain. It gets better then worse then the pain moves around. I had a stable spondy that had become painful due to being assaulted. I was fine before. This is scary... I had the same surgery with only the left side with a rod and screws. Regretting surgery.
Thank you for your videos...I am scheduled for a ALIF/PLIF next week and I am really nervous about this surgery. They are going to insert a cage, graft and spacers in the same area you had done as well as cleaning up the crumbled facets. My sciatica nerve is pinched along with another nerve to the point where I can't sit or even lean over without pain. I have had several surgeries on my back, including bilateral screws in my SI joints but for some reason this surgery scares me. I am 61 and this pain has been going on for many years. I sincerely hope that I have the success you have had. Your videos have helped ease my fears somewhat. One question I have for you..did you have somebody to help you at home for a while during recovery? I live alone and have not made arrangements for help..is it feasible for me to not have help? Thank you and congratulations on your successful surgery.
Robin Calico I did have some help as no one should be driving after the surgery for at least a few weeks. I didn't need someone around the clock but once in a while is very helpful.
I didn't take any meds post surgery. They've never helped me and I recommend people don't take them b/c of the opioid addiction problem it contributes to. Take OTC pain meds if you have to take something.
@@mikeylikey13 WOW. Lol. I bet the doctors jaw dropped when u told him no thanks on the meds. Lol. I never have takin them either, but after surgery I want something. I’m getting L5 S1 fusion Alif soon. 10 years of back and leg pain. That disk is almost bone on bone. Im getting it done at Shands hospital which is a teaching hospital so medical students I think will be working on me which is scary. Man I hope I can still run after this. I run 20 miles a week and love it. Thank you for your videos. Damn aging sucks. Im 41 and have traveled the world and had alot of fun. Guess I need to put pictures all on my walls and just be thankful for the good times. Hopefully it’s not all down hill from here. I was so hard on my body when I was young. Now im taking my diet and lifestyle very serious. Thanks again
Thank you for the video, I am going in for an ALIF, I am pretty nervous as you know. Question, what pre-op advice would you give for recovery? I guess I am asking what to expect once I get home. Sleeping , sitting and standing. I know its a mile walk a day after surgery is there any advice that helps with feeling good and/ or comfortable. Pills make me too groggy I realize I will have to after surgery. The more I can learn the better. Thank you
Sorry for the delayed response. The first week will be basically taking pain killers and just sleeping besides having someone hopefully take care of you. You will not be getting out of bed very much at all the first 2 weeks. I didn't take pain pills like after 2 weeks b/c they really didn't help me much.
I'm 23 years old scheduled for a TLIF on my L5 S1. Super nervous but ready to get my life back. Where you on a specific rehabilitation plan after surgery?
My rehab plan was the same printout that they give everyone else but nothing can prepare you for yours b/c everyones back is different and can react in different ways. I would call my doctors assistant several times in the first 7 weeks b/c of all the leg and foot pain I was dealing with and they always say the same thing. Be patient. Give it time. It sucks but its true.
I feel like garbage. Fusion never did me any good at all. Currently I’m looking at getting stem cells injected directly into my discs in Mexico. It’s been very hard to say the least. Sounds like the same for you and I’m sorry.
@@mikeylikey13 hi Mike! Sorry to hear that. Hope the stem cells work for you! For me Iooked into that for me replacement but for me it be to tricky. I have MS. Just another thing for me to look at. I will make up mind next week hopefully you will feel better! Thanks for your videos! Good to know I'm not the only our there going through this crap! Donna
@@mikeylikey13I'm so sorry brother for your pain. I know you've done so many outlets and have worked your a** off rehabbing this, but have you gone down the McGill Back Mechanic route?
What exactly were your symptoms? Mine are incredible low back pain and spasms coupled with bilateral sciatica, worse on the left. My diagnosis is broad based disc protrusion at L-4 S-1 and desiccated disc. Years of chronic pain and tried every conservative treatment out there and had endoscopic discectomy with Foraminoplasty, laser ablation, and facet Rizotomy. This procedure was a total disaster and caused the disc to re-herniate and now I have increased low back pain and sciatica going to my toes as well as intermittent numbness that I never had before pre-op. I'm now a candidate for ALIF and I'm trying to decide between this procedure or forking out 3800$ out of pocket to try stem cells next month first before fusing. How are you now and are you still glad you fused?
I was diagnosed with spondylolisthesis at L5 s1 with pars defects and herniated discs. Basically the L5 was slipping forward off of the s1. I had pain every time I bent over to do anything. If I worked out or ran I'd have really back spasms where I couldn't stand up for very long. I hated it so decided on surgery. Nobody offered to do stem cells or I'd probably have done it but I also don't know enough about them to give any advice there. I'm 10 months post op now and running about 3 days a week. I'm glad I've done surgery so far. I can actually work out again and not fear for terrible pain. It's been a blessing for me. I wish I had done it sooner.
TheMusicman961 I'm a realtor so I'm fortunate to not have to actually go to an office if I don't want to. A month off is probably ideal for normal working folk though.
Thank you soo much for this video.. I hv disc protrusion causing moderate stenosis on L3-l4 and bulges at the up and lower levels of the lumbar spine.. Been on antidepressants for 10 years.. Just that to keep me to sleep now l get serious redraw symptoms plus am devastated, confused and extremely worried for my life... I hv severe headaches trying to redraw.. Saw a couple of nuro who said l need surgery, others said l shld try epidural and lay off the antidepressants... Bro as worse as the word fucked... I didn't see mine early.. Just felt l had insomnia but there was more crazy to wht l just imagine... Plsss whts ur best advice for me...
Were you on antidepressants b/c of the back pain? Is the back pain really bad? If it is then get surgery. I hate pills and doctors nowadays are just drug pushers its a joke. Get off the pills bro. Pray and seek whatever faith you believe in b/c that always helped me as well.
And as soon as the surgery is over, when can We get up from the bed... the next day can we manage to get up from the bed and what about our nature calls... pls give a prompt reply....
I didn't have any swelling in my belly. I did have numbness where they cut me though for several months after. I started feeling better at week 7 after surgery. Since week 7 it's slowly gotten better week after week.
My question is this I'm 6 weeks post op I felt a sever ( POP) the day I got home which was 8 days after sergery i twisted by accident I was on my bed and doing a ( LOG) roll to get out of bed but my cat spooked me and my hips went right and my torso went left then POP i can walk but sever pain on my right side I seen my Dr he thinks that I broke something did you feel anything like this in your post op ?
Have you stopped running completely? Thanks for the video. I am 67 but was a ranked runner in Europe from the age of 35 to 46. I then became a group exercise instructor but 18 months ago I had to quit because of the pain. I am really scared to get the surgery but I want to get my life back.
I have started running about 3 times a week now and started doing that about 2 weeks ago. I ran 3 miles yesterday which is the most i've done since surgery. I'm doing a little more each time and just watching how my body reacts. I've had no setbacks lately so i'm continuing to do more and more and I'm only 8 1/2 months post op. I'm not supposed to be running but like you my fitness is a huge part of my life and i don't care what they say b/c I want to test my limits and not sit around all the time anymore.
Thanks for the reply. The surgeon promised I will be able to do anything I want after 6 months but, as my husband likes to say, he doesn't know who he is talking to!! Keep us posted. So glad to hear that you are running. I am already plotting to have 5lb weights on my bed when I come home so I can lie in bed and do bicep/tricep/chest/shoulders (lots of reps). Cheers mate.
Not the same surgery, but nice to see people doing good. Stay positive and keep helping others to figure out the do's, the don't, and the oh hell no's! lol!
Hi I am 14 weeks out of Spinal fusion L4- L5, my question is relating to the hardware.I am very aware there is something there and I just wondered if you have found this feeling easing over time?
@@imveryhungry112 i had my surgery (L5-S1) in 2018 my sciatic nerve was. In squeezed condition as it was struck in my backbone with a slipped disk and my backbone was moved aside and it was on the tip of my lower spine..the doctor replaced it with 4 screws and an artificial disc.. it still pains when I work a bit..i don't know if it is muscle pain or backbone pain.. bcoz i recently in 2022 went through another major surgery.. hysterectomy and oophorectomy..both ovaries and uterus has been removed.. it's very uncomfortable and painful..I'm an active person but it still hurts when I do my household work... My spine doctor said it's not the spine ,it's due to this hysterectomy and oophorectomy..i don't know what to do..
Hello.. even iam getting ready for the spine surgery (L5-S1)iam getting so Scared that iam postponing my surgery till today... is it wise to go for it or shall i drop the idea of getting operated? would you pls suggest...
I don't know much about your situation but I am 15 months post op and still very glad I did it. I have aches and pains back there b/c of all the hardware but I'm running and jumping and playing baseball and working out again and have hope!

Thank you mike for the video glad to see you feeling well!
Thank you for your posts. I am going in for the exact same surgery a week from today and VERY NERVOUS! Im happy your surgery went well!
Is it fused yet? 😊
Hello friend how you doing now years later?
Thank you so much 3weeks post surgery l5 s1 identical to your video I'm 35 and was and still am scared but thanks to your video it gives me more hope some pain in surgery points but mostly nerve pain in right leg but every day is getting better thanks again
Hello friend how you doing now years later
You have brought a little comfort to me. I will be going in for a alif/plif next month. I been 10 years in this condition. My life has pretty much been hell. Financial I can’t afford it. I struggle every day to get my self going. But my back is at a point that it’s either do or don’t walk again. I would appreciate you giving me some tips on the first course or if says. Of what to expect. I will be by myself. I know I can do it. But would like some tips if you can spare a minute.
Thank you for your words
Of
Encouragement. I pray that all goes well with you.
Thank you
Try to think positive as much as possible. Theres enough negativity already b/c of the fear and I was there as well. Call your doctor a lot if you need to just to hear them tell you to be patient b/c that's all they will say the first few months. And they are right.
Thank you for positive energy you gave me. I suppose to do the same surgery in couple weeks.
Did u fuse it? 😢
Hello friend how you doing now years later??
Hello Mike, We would love a 1 year update. thank you for your information.
Im glad your doctotor did it right and you're doing great. Im one of the minority that suffer FFS. Failed Fusion Syndrome. Yay Im special.
I’m not doing great. My fusion was also a failure.
Keep doing the videos and keep us updated... please
How's your fusion today 😢
@@imveryhungry112 Had a revision on my original surgery at L4/L5 in April of 2023, they went in from the front this time. It seems to have helped but I am starting to believe some of my pain is and has always been from L5/S1 disc that was never addressed, so I am going to wait another 5 or 6 months and see if someone can clean up that disc without having a fusion. I guess time will tell where to move next.
Thanks for the Video! It helps others.
Had a fusion 3 months ago...not doing well..would live to talk
Hang in there it will get better.
I’m worried I will be on pain meds for the rest of my life so I’m scared to get the lumbar fusion
I don’t take meds now and I’ve adjusted to my back limitations like I don’t jog can’t play b ball ect
But I can walk around the mall
My main concern is getting hooked on pills or even having to take them repeatedly months after surgery
Thanks for your encouraging video
I am about to have this procedure done, front and back. I am tilted forward by the condition. Were you tilted forward? If so, are you able to stand up straight after the surgery? I hope you are doing well.Thank you very much.
I had spondylolisthesis if that’s what you mean.
Bethany Chance Sure what questions did you have?
Scheduled to have the same procedure done on 9-18-18 and I am terrified! I’m only 33 and I hope I’m not making the wrong decision.
I had my L5 S1 fused on 9-18-18. :) My back feet are worse than pre surgery. Sucks. Good luck.
@@truthseeker_1776the fusion of spine made you worse ? 😢
Did you fuse spine yet ? 😢
He screamed "I'll fix your feet" hmm
He lied. Those were the last words he said to me. I should have listened to my gut. 😮Oh well. It could always be worse.
As far as my back. Yes sir, much worse. As well as the neuropathy in both legs and feet.
@@mikeylikey13 Thank you very much for your story Mikey. I will take your opinion into consideration. I wish you better day by day. A hug
What was the cause of your spine deterioration?
@@atonyldid you fuse your spine ? 😢
Thanks for the video. I had exact same op 6 weeks ago.How long did you need pain meds for post op?
Rita
In north georgia, Dr. Charles Cha fused my L2-5. I would make the same decision in a second.
Did you have trapped air after your surgery ? How long did it take you to go back to work ? 6 weeks.
I didn’t have trapped air that I’m aware of. Yeah took me about 6-8 weeks to go back to work.
Hey I go in for the same surgery Oct 17 I am so scared. How long is the healing time? What should I expect
Michael what is the pain level now? Do you still have leg and back pain? I hope and pray you are doing great.!!
Hi! My name is Donna your video was 5 years ago. How do you feel now?
Hey Michael, just wondering how many weeks were you out of work after your operation.
TheMusicman961 I'm a realtor so I'm fortunate to not have to actually go to an office if I don't want to. A month off is probably ideal for normal working folk though.
How long were you out of work? Im going in for this surgery in 2.5 weeks. I want to return to work in 8 weeks post op. Is that going to be possible?
I have to stand at work for 3-6 hours each shift. No lifting of any kind. Lots of walking. I am a hostess
how are you now and how long were you in post op pain?
Yes they will have you get up the next day and you will be assisted to the bathroom by the nurse.
Hello Micheal, How long does it take all the swelling in your belly to go away?, How long did it take for you to start feeling better?
I didn't have any swelling in my belly. I did have numbness where they cut me though for several months after. I started feeling better at week 7 after surgery. Since week 7 it's slowly gotten better week after week.
Hey I appreciate you getting back to me Micheal , Im happy you had a positive outcome thank you for sharing.
OMG. I'm so so sorry for this.
It's been a year. Have you got some relief ????? Did you went to dr again?
What he said ?
Are you really doing better or are you just high off meds
My doctor say spine fusion makes everything better 😢
@@mikeylikey13 Are you running on the grass or on the concrete?
Not the same surgery, but nice to see people doing good. Stay positive and keep helping others to figure out the do's, the don't, and the oh hell no's! lol!
You fused it? 😢
Hi I am 14 weeks out of Spinal fusion L4- L5, my question is relating to the hardware.I am very aware there is something there and I just wondered if you have found this feeling easing over time?
Claire McGowan Yes I have felt very aware that it was there until recently. It takes time and will feel better eventually for you.
Thanks for your reply, hope you are still progressing well.
Sorry I forgot to ask I know this video is 6 month but how far along were you when you said it seemed to settle. Thanks
Hi Mike, I’m in your neck of woods, can you let me know who your surgeon is .
Hey how are you feeling now?? After couple of years
I feel good most of the time but I’m also not working out as much so that probably goes a little hand in hand.
@@mikeylikey13 that’s good you are feeling good most of the time 😊 why you removed your screws from your surgery?
