    I saw a comment a while back that summed this performance up for me:
    Watching this song is like watching someone sing the eulogy at their own funeral.
    Layne knew he was done, he knew he wasn't long for this world.

    The Love, Hate, Love performance is the one really want to hear Layne's power.

  • @tamibrandt
    @tamibrandt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    With the Unplugged show, he was deep in the heroin addiction, so much so that he knew his liver was shot to hell, but he hadn't isolated himself completely yet. If you listen to Jerry Cantrell talk about Layne, all he saw when he looked over at Layne during the Unplugged show was that his best friend was dying and there was nothing he could do. Layne was such a ghost of himself during the Unplugged show. The whole show is heartbreaking to watch. Unplugged happened in 1996, he died in 2002 -- a 6 year long slow suicide.
    If you want the best LIVE Alice in Chains, look up Love Hate Love live at the Moore 1990. THAT is untouchable perfection as far as a live performance by a rock band. All rock bands should strive to have a live show that perfect.

    This song is about singer Layne Stayleys battle with Heroin, which sadly took his life!

    • @tamibrandt
      @tamibrandt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      You're half right. Nutshell was more about the tabloid-like scrutiny of Layne's drug addiction and how he felt about any publicity drawn specifically to him only. Spin Magazine and Rolling Stone both put a picture of only HIM (and not the band as a whole) on their covers, singling him out. It pissed him off. The writer of the Rolling Stone piece managed to piss off the whole band and their management to the point the whole band threatened to kick the writer's ass.

    • @Nomsaiyan
      @Nomsaiyan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mad Season's Wake up is more about heroin, or Junkhead

    • @tamibrandt
      @tamibrandt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Tom Waits Yep, that's the one. Rolling Stone tried to cover their ass saying something about the "integrity of the magazine" only then (years later) to put the Boston Marathon bomber on the cover in a Jim Morrison pose. Rolling Stone is such a rag mag these days.

    • @tamibrandt
      @tamibrandt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tom Waits In that case, Motley Crue must have REALLY pissed them off, because Nikki Sixx has talked before about there being NO CHANCE in Hell Motley Crue would be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame due to the way they acted for a majority of their early career.
      Since the music industry and MTV have blackballed Layne for how he lived. The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the 2003 show, and then refused to put Layne in the 2002 Memorial video (or "forgot to"), it pissed Sean, Mike and Jerry off and they left the show.

    • @tamibrandt
      @tamibrandt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tom Waits I'm way past where you are. It's already pissed me off how commenters think because Layne had an addiction that EVERY SINGLE SONG was about his addiction. Some songs like Down in a Hole and Heaven Beside You were about Jerry's relationship with his girlfriend and having to get himself out of the doghouse with her.
      Yes, Layne did chronicle his own feelings about his drug addiction on roughly half the Dirt album. But the other half of that album had to do with other topics. I end up having to write BOOK-LONG posts explaining that NOT EVERY SONG was about Layne's addiction. Unlike what the PRESS thought, NO His addiction DID NOT define the band.
      Layne was SO MUCH MORE than his addiction. Layne did so much for his bandmates (mainly Jerry). And unlike how Mark Lanegan portrays him in that damn book of his which was that Layne led a bleak existence after Lanegan met him . . . Mark Lanegan's book pissed me off so much. Yes, Layne's life is tragic and it's haunting how he died, how he was found. But Layne didn't have a bleak existence, he had a life that he lived to the utmost (even with his addiction issues that ultimately made him a recluse.)

    Even though the band was going through various ‘struggles’ at this time, they still managed to produce the best MTV unplugged show ever recorded. This is a deeply haunting yet beautiful performance. I’m fairly certain they all knew things were coming to an end - but what a way to do so. This was a gift to us all.

    Do "I Stay Away". By far the most original tune they ever wrote. Insane dichotomy of beautiful harmony with some of the nastiest grunge they ever did. Also the greatest guitar solo ever written.

    "Layne looks like hes come out the Matrix" ...yeh I think Layne probably feels that way too lool joking aside, Layne's talent on vocals is eerie, his voice is so unique but so fragile and powerful at the same time its such an unexpected combo, and he does it with all his heart and soul, and we all feel that , beautiful

    From Wikipedia: “One of Staley's last shows with Alice in Chains was the MTV Unplugged performance in New York on April 10, 1996. The recording of Unplugged came after a long period of inactivity for the band; it was their first concert in two-and-a-half years. Staley made his last performance on July 3, 1996, in Kansas City, Missouri, while Alice in Chains were touring with Kiss.”....It’s also impressive that he shot up right before walking on stage and killed the entire setlist.

    Any song from live at the Moore show is 🔥.. Man in the Box and Love Hate Love r both outstanding live performances ..Bleed the Freak from the same show was so good they used audio/ video as the official video . It Ain’t Like That from the Singles movie is great as well.. if u want more unplugged Down in a Hole and Got Me Wrong r 1 and 1a from that show for me .. Good stuff Jay , keep them Alice In Chains reactions coming . If you do a studio next Rain When I Die is a must , my fav and a longer song for AiC 🤘👍

    Layne was high on heroin during this performance. Jerry was sick with food poisoning if you watch the whole show you can see the bucket they had beside him for him to puke into. Sean did not use brushes he just played very subdued giving it a perfect vibe. Yes that is an acoustic bass. Part of AIC's sound is that they tune a 1/2 step down. With all that going on, this one of the all time best Unplugged performances ever.

    nah, he was about to go INTO the matrix from depression, heroin addiction .......... he says it right in the song - "No one to cry to; No place to come home ... And yet I find it repeating in my head; If I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead" -- right around the 3:20 mark the 1st time he uses his voice in that plaintive wail, the look on his face is DEFEAT - am I the only one seeing that?????

    He was always going through something if you think about it. Their lyrics show someone pretty messed up. Drugs man. 😔 Btw, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl also used the brushes for their Unplugged set. Pearl Jam put on an Unplugged show with a totally different vibe than these two. Their drummer was almost his usual self. 😅

    This was when Layne was deep in depression & addiction. I can't remember but I believe his GF died of an overdose before this. About 6 months after this AIC went on tour with Korn & about a month after Layne overdosed & survived but stayed home didn't really tour & a few yrs after he died alone in his apartment of an overdose.

  • @TheTwoThumbs

    Yours are some of my favorite reactions honestly, they are done exactly as I would think they should be. Well done and yes Sean used brushes and the quote on Mike's bass is referencing Metallica, who at that time had just cut their hair short, and were in attendance in the front row. Lol. :)

    During the last year of his life, he locked himself in his apartment, and would not take visitors. He was a shut-in. In an interview, he stated that he knew he was going to die soon. One of the most unique voices ever.

    • @garrettpapit
      @garrettpapit 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think that interview actually happened. Many think the journalist made it up to sell an article. Layne's family believes this...and it makes sense. He wouldn't let in friends and family, but he pours his heart out to a stranger? He never talked about being out if control, or his addiction at all, with the media then suddenly goes all in. Friends say that the speech patterns and words don't sound like him and some of the things he said were ironically related to past articles written by the journo. There is a YT video all about it.

    It's not surprising, but I rarely see anyone talk about their bassist, whether it's Mike Starr or, later, like in this show, Mike Inez.
    Neither Starr nor Inez is showy a la Flea, but both are solid. What stands out to me, though, is the composition of the bass lines. I'm working off the assumption that each bassist composed his own parts. The bass lines are frequently outstanding and very much add to the overall vibe of the band. The same thing can be said of Sean Kinney on drums, who is wildly underrated.

    the haircut comment on the guitar was making fun of Metallica when the guys cut their long hair off. Layne was deep into the hellish depths of heroin addiction. Amazing performance, but hard to watch. Layne was in the throes of heroin addiction and it was coming to a head at the time this performance took place. You can see it in him - the frailty, withdrawn and reflective as he realized his life was hitting a turning point and that he was succumbing to addiction... whew - heavy. And he was such a talent. Beautiful and sad performance.

    Love Hate Love: th-cam.com/video/l9jX1KAKp78/w-d-xo.html
    You will not be disappointed. Alice In Chains has so many great tunes, imho the best band to come out of the Seattle grunge era (even though they considered themselves basically metal), and Love Hate Love demonstrates Laynes powerful vocals like no other tune. If you want to react to a fantastic AIC tune that others have not, do Dirt, the title track from the album Dirt.
    Maybe next check out Them Bones, I Stay Away, and Rain When I Die. That last one is my personal fav AIC tune... no pressure. For deeper cuts: Junkhead, Sludge Factory, Again, Got Me Wrong.
