Hey everyone! So it turns out if you drink 17 5.5% heavily aromatic beers.... you get confused. First issue - I skipped a beer in the penultimate group. This was spotted and I had to reset - so rest assured that while it looks like I'm drinking the same beer twice, I'm not! Second issue, I labelled the Rothaus and Rothaus AF beers the wrong way around. Sorry for any confusion! THis is what happens when you're a two man team and your other man isn't there that week to check the video before it goes live.....
Rothaus Hefe is the beer that made me loving beer for the very first time; and I predicted that you had probably made a mistake with two Rothaus bottles when you made the comment questioning if it was low in alcohol. Also, I thought if you made a mistake when rating Weihenstephaner as it was a great beer as I remembered. But, I bought a bottle from Sainsbury's after that and immediately noticed you were correct. However, their Kritallweizen is still one of my favourites. I believe that Schneider Tap 07 or Tap 01 deserve more scores though. Kloster Andech is obviously unquestionable :)
Was looking really forward to the Hefeweizen episode. I fell in love with Hefeweizen when I spent a year in Munich and for my Brewmasters degree at Doemens. Apart from the ones mentioned I also quite enjoyed the ones made by Ayinger Hefeweizen and Gutmann. Especially Gutmanns was a brewmasters favorite and people went to great lenghts to score their yeast for their final brews.
I’m in Germany now so a well-timed video. I did a supermarket sweep of Hefeweizens, the bloke behind me in the queue asked why I didn’t just buy the one I liked best, I need to find it first I told him. And for me that was Weihenstephaner, a fabulous beer, but now I must go and find some Andechts, the exploring never stops lol.
Presumably there was an editing issue as the beer you said was the Rothaus AF was not the one on the screen as it was named Rothaus and presumably an alcohol version.
Not that fussed about Hefeweizens but do love your blind taste tests, so much information and enthusiasm. I'm sure that spreadsheet is worth a few quid now too. Can't you curate some of these beers in an online shop or open a pub at the end of my road please?
Hefe-Weizen are my favorite beer type and Andechs my favorite of them ever since I first tried it, for exactly the same reason you laid out here. I feel weirdly validated now - when I bring it up people have rarely heard of it around here.
My wife and I absolutely love Hefeweizens. No super shocks here from us. I quite like the darker ones. Its a proper beer for a hot summers day or a windy Autumns night. Pleased Andechs won, its brilliant.
Hacker-Pschorr is my favourite from the ones I've tried, closely followed by weihenstephaner and franziskaner, i like that it's slightly lighter without compromising flavour, makes it perfectly balanced with refreshment and taste imo. Unfortunately my local pub and shop only sell Erdinger now... Love these taste test vids btw!
I ran into several people in Bavaria who said that Franziskaner was their favorite (Ich auch!), but they drank a different brand with a lightler body during the hotter days of summer.
@@jimbrennan1181 i loved the "Isar weisse" with citra hops from paulaner, and i think 3,4%abv. They don't brew it anymore. 😪 it is now "leichte weisse "😪
My dad found his inner beer enthusiasm when he had Paulaner's weissbier dunkel for the first time. I owe that beer some gratitude, as it made my dad install a tap in our yard, so we could always have it on tap, haha!
Tucher's was always my favourite, Wetherspoons used to sell it up and down the country but can't find it anywhere now. Ocado are currently selling Benediktiner's which is excellent.
Im glad you hate Erdinger as much as i do. I was a little shocked that you thought the Rothaus was so bad, though. That is one of my favourites. I like how its more tropical fruits than just banana.

Hello Johnny! Another great video. Hefeweizen is my go-to Summertime favorite. Now that the season is changing, I am seeing more Oktoberfest beers in the stores. Time to repeat this with the Oktoberfest Marzen style beers. Cheers.
if u ever come out to Austin TX, you absolutely need to try Live Oak's Hefeweizen. Live Oak in general are an amazing brewery but their Hefeweizen really sings !!
My oldest son lives in Austin since 2021, I been out there twice now and when I go there next I am making it a point to check out Live Oak, looks fantastic and heard lots of good reviews of there brews. If you get the chance look up the mini documentary they have which features a a Rauchbier among others. Its a must visit when in Austin. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I find Hefeweizen to be absolutely perfect after a days skiing. Or after a long walk on a hot day. Or if it's been raining, or sunny. Pretty excellent for every occasion really :)
Great episode for a great style of beer!! Smooth, non too bitter, hearty yet very refreshing! Plus, you can still taste the noble luxury of brewing your beer with wheat.
Great vlog guys as always, I can’t believe you didn’t try my favourite from Konig Ludwig, I’ve found d it hard to get in the UK but finally found a taproom selling in at the weekend, and as good as I remember, if you haven’t tried it you really must
Was hoping Benediktiner might have been up for tasting, a Weissbier I absolutely love. Great video though, showing love for a beer style I absolutely adore!
I'm drinking a Schneider Weißbier right now, and yes they are that dark! Unfiltered and unpasteurized and a little bit un-weißbier-ie. Still noice though, especially chilled a little more, but also quite different.
Did anyone notice the results were different from the tasting - namely the Rothaus, which went from 16 to 20 in the rankings. Presume the Rothaus and Rothaus AF got mixed up in the tasting. Love this channel BTW x
This vid reminds me of the fact that I haven't drunk much hefe this summer for whatever reason. When I do pick up a hefe I don't think about it much, Weihenshephaner, Paulaner, HP, whichever strikes my fancy at the time and is refrigerated. The Weisbier that I buy regularly is Weihenstephaner's Vitus which most of us here know is a Weizenbock. I have not tried Anches' version. I believe i know where I can pick up a bottle. Thanks
Was looking forward to this one! I wish you could have tried Hopf or Unertl but upon seeing the lineup I was confident that Kloster Andechs would win. And yes, Weizens make excellent low alcohol beers, for my money the best style to go alcohol free.
No surprise to me, that Andechs won! It's a fantastic beer and brewery! But I honestly was shocked about Schneider Weisse. I agree with you, that there must have gone something wrong with that particular brew, because usually, in my opinions, their Weißbier are the most delicious. I also was almost celebrating your rating of Erdinger - I had it in a tasting test as an example of a Hefeweizen and wasn't able to identify it as one.
Lived in Heidelberg from 1990-2001. There used to be this Hefeweizen that the label had a Farmer with a sickel cutting Wheat. I can't remember the Name but it was delicious.
Been having my own Hefeweissbier season..Yeah the Franzikaner was a surprise since its quite ready available in many supermarkets, got 2 Weihenstephaner for £4 from waitrose (which i was very happy with) and had a pint of draught Paulaner weiss (equally happy with)..need to seek out your top 2 johnny. But my favourite was from 'German Kraft' @ the Mercato Metropolitano (german style made in london) was pretty sceptical but damn they make a very good hefeweizen and Helles.
Great video! I've been exploring wheat beer recently and love them. Erdinger tastes okay but a bit artificial to me. Franziskaner is good, a lot of flavour in it. But Weihenstephaner is my favourite weizen I've tasted so far, just deliciously easy and sippable. Here in Glasgow WEST Brewery also do a delicious velvety banana-bread wheat beer that I love on tap.
A few years ago we also did a blind test and unfortunately the famous Schneider didn't score very well in our test. On the other hand Oettinger (a low cost beer) did score far better. There is a lot of marketing. Anyways, I still buy Oettinger Lager and Weizen (both have alcohol free versions) only for yeast starters and drink Schneider Tap 7 :-)
Given how positive you were in the first round I came to notice that hefeweizens generally tend to score higher on Untapped, compared to other common beer styles. Even a cheap brewery like Oettinger which scores below 3 on average, would get over 3 for their Hefe. Is it just so easy to impress with it?
I am really surprised about his opinion to Erdinger. i actually had one a brewery tour there in the city of Erding. You might got a ‚broken’ glas as the they have a very pleaseant all over good beer and only Weissbier! Beside the regular Weissbier, they have about 6-7 specialities ( some for Winter, dark etc). Thy do also have an alc.-free version, which is okisch for Weissbier.
I moved from Australia to Würzburg last year (not in small part due to loving German beer) and was pleasantly surprised that the local hefeweizen (Keiler) is actually very good, and holds up against most of the big names from further South. Based on this video I'd love to see you do a blind taste test of alcohol free hefeweizen. Because German's love beer so much, most of the big names actually do alcohol free versions. Maybe if that's too niche just an episode on alcohol free beers of all styles?
Franconia has the highest density of breweries in the world(always depending on how you measure) The Bavarians like to point themselves out as THE place to be for beer, but the Fränkische Schweiz is like a Mecca for tiny breweries, in beautiful areas. If you're looking for a weekend camping/hiking trip have a look at the Bierwanderroute.
I agree , Erdinger is really bad and Andechs is amazing. However, Erdinger can if they want to, Erdinger Urweisse is quite good. But I've not seen it outside Germany. I'm missing Karg Weissbier from Murnau and König Ludwig in the test, they are also really good.
Mate brilliant video. Total weissbier fan myself. Yeah Andechs pure class. I dunno about Frankie Waterey though. You need to try Frankie Royal on PerfectDraft. This video is brilliant though. I will do this one day but a costly video it is.
Great vid - Good to see the Rothaus AF scoring well - I discovered it a year or two ago and its my fave AF beer (of any style). Disapointed Schneider Weisse didnt do so well - tap7 is my fave weissbier - but Andechs is a top beer - and fortunately sold at the bottle shop/bar at the top of my road :)
As someone having to be AF for a bit, I would love a craft AF blind tasting to give you a challenge. With new AF beers coming from traditional big hitting breweries at the moment, there's a good story there too.
Jonny when he's uploading anything on hefeweizens: 'Nobody is going to like this or think it's cool!' Everyone: 'YAAAAY HEFEWEIZEN!'🎉😂 Seeing Jacob makes me nostalgic, my go to pub had it on draft permanently, and I was absolutely gutted to see it go. Thought they went bust. But here they are, where can I get one?😊
Andechs is a cracking Hefe. Have tried to clone it and felt it used more new world hops alongside other nobles. Just brewed v2 last week and upped the mash temp a tickle and the amarillo/nectaron/huell melon for sweet that nectar hit. Anyone out there that has a clone recipe, please share. I’ll bring some to Love + Beer🍻🍻🍻
This is a style which really deteriorates if left to age outside the fridge . Autolysis from yeast becomes apparent. How close are the bottled-on dates on these beers? A week fresh versus 6 months isnt a fair fight, even comparing the same beer.
FranZiskaner , not Fransiskaner. Zed, man Zed 😄 anyway, this beer has always been one of my favorites. We did a blind Hefeweizen taste test at my house with 20 beers and it won. It’s just amazing. Just gotten too expensive here in the USA. Have you ever had Live Oak Hefeweizen from Austin? They specialize in German beers. My favorite brewery in Texas. Come down and I’ll show you around!
Shame about Weltenburger. We probably had the same bad batch earlier this year going by your description. Usually, it is a very nice beer. Andechs is my favourite and on a good day I get apricot, banana, peach, honeydew melon, double cream, some bitterness and a bit dry end. From a dimple glass, big head to lower the CO2, at 6C- 7C so slightly colder than it should be.
Good editing on the Rothaus front 🤣. As far as wheat beers go, I’m not a fan but always curious to make sure I try a good one, just to be sure - so may try the Andechs or Hacker. I actually like Heff / Dunkels, just to take the edge off the banana element.
I have done taste tests with four or five Hefeweizens and both my partner and I got a very distinct taste of olives from Weihenstephaner. It was odd to the point that it took about a month to finish the six-pack. I wonder if this is a common flavor characteristic or if maybe I just got an old carton.
Well Johnny, apparently Rothaus makes a great AF not AF and a subpar AF actual AF. Oh well. I’m not likely to get to try either one back here in Canada, but absolutely love the channel and content.
Schneider Weiss uses carafa in their hefe for color along with 2 decoctions. Probably the darkest out there. Not my favorite hefe but if you can get it in cans it’s better than the bottle versions.
"Big bold banana. Nice rich body." should be your Tshirt. Andechser is by and far the best Weißbier out there - if it was handled correctly. I had many a case that was markedly off, mostly in summer. I assume they had been left standing in the sun or hot warehouses somewhere. Maybe they were just old. Important ones you've missed would be Gutmann, König Ludwig and Prinzregent Luitpold.
Sadly hard to find in the UK but have had the first two before - and indeed drunk them with the Prince himself! th-cam.com/video/hAKSq2xBzkM/w-d-xo.html
Before watching: Hefeweizen was the style that got me into Craft Beer, and I went deep, travelling around Bavaria tasting the vast Malo of them. My peak Weizen is Gutmann, followed by Kuchlbauer. From your chosen range my list would be 1. Weihenstephan. 2. Rothaus. 3. Andechs. 4. Franz. 5. Erdinger. Paulaner is undrinkable, rotten apples galore. No idea why Pedro keep this.
Reckon you should do taste tests like this over several days. Fair enough with macro-lagers but your palate will be burst after tasting multiple more characterful beers.
I was in Munich a couple of months ago (after being bit by the craft-beer-bug) and I came back a bit more skeptical of Augustiener...I mean, they brew top class beers, but HB (both Hell and Dunkel) are imo ever so slightly more palatable and Andechs are just amazing at making beer! All of their beers are basically flawless. PS. I was hoping to see also König Ludwig in there, but it is a pretty small brewery with respect to the others (I'd guess on par with Andechs)
@@TheCraftBeerChannel Right! I remember! Also shout out to Camba, who makes a banana-bomb of a Weizen and also a hoppier version which is extremely nice but also a bit divisive
@@TheCraftBeerChannel it used to be common in the UK ( or at least around Sheffield!) about 10/15 years ago.. but thinking about it, I haven't seen it for ages
Augustiner is famous for various reasons: -privatly owend -only brewery with wooden barrals of 200 Liters at Oktoberfest -no advertising -cheapest beer at Oktoberfest and at the biergaardens -helles and edelstoff are munich legends...
These were all apparently poured improperly. In Germany they will pour 2/3 then swirl the yeast up from the bottom and finish the pour. As we all know much flavor comes from the yeast, not the thin beer at the top.
Hey! We can assure you that the beers were poured with sediment as the look of them shows! However, many of these beers are no longer bottle conditioned so there is little point in the two pour method. Others also use lager yeast rather than ale yeast for the refermentation, so the same applies.
I love Hefeweizen. But I find the ones we get here just don’t taste as fresh and flavourful as they taste in Bavaria. The only one tastes approximately close is Weihenstephan especially on draught.
Did I miss something? Rothaus was number 7 that Jonny thought was alcohol free. Then later on there was a Rothaus AF. So was there or not two Rothaus beers and did Jonny spot the difference? Apologies in advance if I am being stupid.
Visited the Andechs’ monastery years back with my German then girlfriend. Tried a few of their beers, including the Hefeweizen. My girlfriend ate what she translated as pig-knuckles, but I couldn’t bring myself to try them. She also stole a branded Andechs glass for me! 😂
I don't really love Hefeweizen and some of them I've scored years ago and my tastes will have long since changed. But the one I rated highest was Steigl.
@@kennyangel Right, it would be a bit unfair letting it compete with regular dunklen Weißen. They should definitely do a Weizenbock challenge though, it's such a great style.
@@TheCraftBeerChannel because I think they do brew in license in other places, but not sure about it. Certainly is one of the Weizen that you most regularly would find outside Germany. For instance Zoo Bar in Leicester Square even has it on tap!

I'm gonna do the same thing, except for non-alcoholic Hefeweizens.
Jonny when he's uploading anything on hefeweizens: 'Nobody is going to like this or think it's cool!'
Everyone: 'YAAAAY HEFEWEIZEN!'🎉😂
Seeing Jacob makes me nostalgic, my go to pub had it on draft permanently, and I was absolutely gutted to see it go. Thought they went bust. But here they are, where can I get one?😊
Ah it's true. I guess the Hefe fans are just spread throughout the world enough that you rarely meet one!
I think you tried the Weltenberger twice.
Haha I did and we had to reset so I do try both beers on camera as the tasting notes show. Lucky someone was watching me after so many beers.
Interesting need to try franziskaner again. I really liked Ayinger's ones too. Not much better in life than having these on tap in the Alps.
I doubt it does, but I love the sound of your version!
The best beer one can drink!
I'm missing my personal favorite, a "Gutmann Helles Hefeweizen". Ok, its even hard to get within Germany... But good video. Thanks!
This is a style which really deteriorates if left to age outside the fridge . Autolysis from yeast becomes apparent. How close are the bottled-on dates on these beers? A week fresh versus 6 months isnt a fair fight, even comparing the same beer.
what happened to Line 16 17? swapped during tasting?
Yep it was pointed out that I drank 15/16 in the wrong order so had to adjust things. Thought we'd made it seemless, apparently not. Apologies!
Drinking a Koenig Ludwig Weissbier in Bonn as I look at this video. Decent.
Will watch the video when I get back to the UK on Friday.
Great Tasting. Although i would have loved to see how "Die Weisse", Austria's oldest Weißbier Brewery, would have fared against the lineup.
Shame about Weltenburger. We probably had the same bad batch earlier this year going by your description. Usually, it is a very nice beer. Andechs is my favourite and on a good day I get apricot, banana, peach, honeydew melon, double cream, some bitterness and a bit dry end. From a dimple glass, big head to lower the CO2, at 6C- 7C so slightly colder than it should be.
...also Ayinger Bräuweisse is my 2nd best, with almost 'champagne' like characteristics and hinting towards Belgium beers
weltenburger is a famous brewery, but the hefeweizen is produced by bischofshof in regensburg
My absolute favorite beer style and as always I'm taking stock of the opinions of someone I consider a real Weiz guy.
My favourit hefeweizen at the moment is from Berg Brewery, Ehingen Germany😍 you should taste this! Cheers🍻
I'll see if I can get hold of it!
Good editing on the Rothaus front 🤣.
As far as wheat beers go, I’m not a fan but always curious to make sure I try a good one, just to be sure - so may try the Andechs or Hacker.
I actually like Heff / Dunkels, just to take the edge off the banana element.
Whoops. Ironic I got the AF bit wrong
Sorry mixed them up in the edit! I definitely tasted them as per the sheet
1:23 I've been saying it's a full course meal for years.
3 Weizen sind auch eine Mahlzeit, da hast aber noch nichts getrunken.
You forgot Gutmann. They probably also have the best non-alcoholic Hefeweizen.
Damn you were first.
Schneider Weiss uses carafa in their hefe for color along with 2 decoctions. Probably the darkest out there. Not my favorite hefe but if you can get it in cans it’s better than the bottle versions.
Have you ever tried Weizenbock? It tastes hearty like roast beef and has the fine consistency of ice cream.
Well König Ludwig is not a wheatbeer, its Prinzregent Luitpold both from the same brewery
After watching: seems to me many of the beers in your lineup were mistreated 😂
WHat makes you say that? Only the Schneider showed any off flavours related to storage
@@TheCraftBeerChannel just a poor joke
We visited Konig Ludwig last time we were in Munich! Great beer, but sadly very hard to find in the UK th-cam.com/video/hAKSq2xBzkM/w-d-xo.html
Augustiner is famous for various reasons:
-privatly owend
-only brewery with wooden barrals of 200 Liters at Oktoberfest
-no advertising
-cheapest beer at Oktoberfest and at the biergaardens
-helles and edelstoff are munich legends...
Can’t believe you didn’t throw the Aldi and Lidl wheats in here.
Sorry messed up the edit and got them the wrong way around
You should definitely drink more hefeweizen.
Gonna remind myself of this comment daily.
Visited the Andechs’ monastery years back with my German then girlfriend. Tried a few of their beers, including the Hefeweizen. My girlfriend ate what she translated as pig-knuckles, but I couldn’t bring myself to try them. She also stole a branded Andechs glass for me! 😂
Stealing from a monastery? Hmmmm.
Go track down some Der Weizen from Tilman's Brauerei for the next one
you should do the same but for non-alcoholic versions
Yes I should!
I don't really love Hefeweizen and some of them I've scored years ago and my tastes will have long since changed. But the one I rated highest was Steigl.
Weihenstephaner is the best out of all of these.
Ayinger #2
-I’ve tasted all but the lowest ones.
How would you score weihenstephaner vitus?
That's a weizenbock, a different type of beer.
Try König Ludwig Weissbier - another great Hefeweizen
We did! With the Prince himself! th-cam.com/video/hAKSq2xBzkM/w-d-xo.html
Now please do Weißbier dunkel (dark), with things like Schneider Adventinus that'll blow your mind :)
Aventinus is a Weizenbock.
@@flagadabilal6565 I know, just tried to copy it... it is a dark Weizen though ;)
@@kennyangel Right, it would be a bit unfair letting it compete with regular dunklen Weißen. They should definitely do a Weizenbock challenge though, it's such a great style.
@@flagadabilal6565 would love to see that actually too!
Isn't it curious that your scores started high and got lower? Does that onslaught of tasting wear out the palate?
Was the Franziskaner brewed in the UK by any chance?
Ha - I don't believe so.
@@TheCraftBeerChannel because I think they do brew in license in other places, but not sure about it. Certainly is one of the Weizen that you most regularly would find outside Germany. For instance Zoo Bar in Leicester Square even has it on tap!
@@kennyangel look at the bottle and you may find out. does it say "Münchner Bier" or "bavarian beer" on it. also it may say produced and bottled at Spaten- Franziskaner Brewery, Marstraße, München....
Best hefeweizen Ive ever tried is Weininger hoamat weisse and trust me Ive tried a lot of the very best over the years and Ive personally reviewed over 400 beers from Germany,, if you havent tried it you should, not easy to get though, Andechs is fantastic but their beers are too carbonated in my opinion, leaves it too aggessive for me in the mouth, cheers for review🍻

@@hansmuller3604 Yeah private brauerie m.c wieninger
Just a very quick question. I will be visiting Liverpool and Manchster the end of this September. Which breweries do I have to visit before I leave, I have two days with a mate 🤗 SHOOT!! Love & Beer 🍻
