Hello everyone! Oscillator demos are always hard, as different people like different things. I tried to cover all interests. The chapter 'Basic patches' contains mostly dry and clean audio demos with a lot of knob tweaking. The chapter 'Advanced patches' has ideas for music setups with effects. All the best!
If anyone is on the fence about this one, get it. It sounds incredible and is so easy to get great sounds from even without a lot of modulation. But if you do have a Batumi or Zadar it really comes alive. One of my favorite analog oscillators, it’s exceeded my expectations.
Loved your demos. Those formant sounds about halfway through were especially interesting, all without a filter. Im really getting interested in this oscillator. Thank you for your hard work making this video!
@@MonotrailTechTalk I'm watching this again and I wanted to point out, at around 17:30 there is a sound that repeats about every 5 seconds, it's like an elephant breathing out. :) Does that also come from Sofia?
@@Chinpira001 I think I know what you mean, and then no. At the start of that clip you can see the modulation going into sofia in the two sliders on the left side. At the point in the video you mention I added the note ' now adding the reverb', but in truth I add the dry signal into the reverb at that point. I didn't realize when recording that the clock division modulating the pre-delay was already audible, even without a signal input for the reverb. This modulation is happening at half the speed Sofia is receive a pluck, and causing the light airy breathing sound.
@@MonotrailTechTalk Thanks for clarifying. I somehow really like that sound there, funny that it results out of something you were planning differently 🙂
Glad to hear the video helped out! Think there aren't to much demos out yet. But tbh I'm quite curious to hear what other people will do with this! I mentioned in the end I like to get the dark and gritty side of things. But I'm pretty sure you can get nice results when aiming for the oscillator to be higher pitched and bright. Will explore it myself as well if I can find the time! All the best :)
@@MonotrailTechTalk I'm just starting my modular journey, but this module will one day be in my rack. I have an Acidlab m303 arriving next week. Will sign up for your Patreon, the content you're producing is exceptionally good!
Hey, thanks! That's lovely to hear. No pressure of course, but would appreciate it a lot. Over the last year the support on Patreon has grown more than I could have dreamed. It's becoming a big reason these videos are possible!
Just got Odessa and I am so in love.. never got warm with my Belgrad since I had it.. now its a match, and I guess XAOC is my new favorite module brand. It just hits the sweetspot for me out of classical synth architecture and new innovative design, it has it all. I make psytrance and Odessa is so psy its unbelievable, and more and more I discover the other XAOC modules I just want a rack full of their stuff, its soooo fitting to my style of sound design.
Wow, this sounds amazing. I haven't wanted a new module in a long time, but this sounds great fun and so diverse in sound. It will give the new XPO a run for its money! Different of course, but similar enough many might go one or the other
Glad you like it! Would have to listen more to the XPO to make a comparison sound-wise, but they have a different approach for sure. But think you're right in general, I don't feel the need for more complex oscillators at the moment, think they would compete for the same spot :)
@11:22 wtf this sounds like every friggin type of synthesis at once (Except for maybe additive) I hear subtractive, hard sync, pulsar, FM and AM and maybe some ring mod ish tones all at the same time. This really is something new and special
OMG this is amazing! It sounds like FM, a resonant filter, and a buchla complex generator all genetically spliced together Edit @ around 7:40, it sounds like there's a friggin monster stuck in that sound trying to get out!
Glad you liked it! Indeed, there's a lot of great sounds in there that remind of a combination of modules. Filter, distortion, noise, resonance, fm. Actually feel like I'm just scratching the surface with this one, and pretty sure I will find more sounds hiding over the next months :)
Very helpful and clear scope/diagrams! It really help make this complex processing tangible and understandable. Lovely! And this is a massive oscillator, wow.
I've been really enjoying this one a lot since this video. It's a unique sound with limitations, but also a lot of wonderful sweet spots. Make sure to listen to as much demos as you can, but I'd say keep it on your radar :)
@@MonotrailTechTalk absolutely, you are right, it has limits. If I had to ask you a couple of questions regarding a system that I'd like to build, would you give me an opinion? thanks man!
Cool gritty sounds! Thank you for the diagrams, they help understanding the patch a lot better. What module is that phased LFO with spinning leds? The one that you start increasing its frequency at 22:22
Thanks! Glad to hear you like the diagrams :) And that' the Erica Synths Octasource. Did a video on it a while ago in case you like to see more: th-cam.com/video/Y2bKGd5he8s/w-d-xo.html
Great demo, thank you! However you saved $500 for me :) I was very impressed with "Xaoc Sofia quick jam" video, but now It's totally demystified for me. Now i'd better spend money for one more hard-synced vco)
Glad to hear it, thanks! It's basically clean, on purpose. I want people to hear how something sounds out of the box, no complex EQ, compression etc. I only have 3 things permanently turned on on my output: a very subtle EQ boost around 4k/2k, a gain, and a hard limiter. The last one is just to make sure no weird peaks clip, because I mostly keep my recordings around -6db. Im not making it as loud as possible at all, and want the volume to sit comfortable next to a regular voice.
Hahaha, inderdaad. You caught me ;) And I agree. I know it's most important things sound good. But if a company nails both the sound and design, that's just nice!
@@MonotrailTechTalk I agree half with you. The sound is most important but I also think an instrument is more than its sound. How something looks or how you play with it, which parameters are presented to you also ads up to enjoying playing with it. For me a vintage MS-20 feels different then a newer mini or software.
Thanks! It's a customized open source DIY project a friend of mine build. It's a 'performable' dual attenuator. With momentary cut/connect buttons, mute switch and cross link switch.
Yes! It's really weird looking at the scope when building up complex sounds on Sofia, it's really the reverse of what happens when you close a resonant filter :) So with some modulation building complexity, you get very similar effects.
@@MonotrailTechTalk i think that must have been someone else. Also if you haven't already you definitely need to give it a listen, its been a favourite of mine for about a decade. Its one of those soundtracks that stand alone just as well as a part of something else

Odessa is so different. It is a cluster oscillator that outputs sine waves and can give more of a chorus type sound that is lush and full but different from Sofia in a lot of ways. Probably should get them both just to be safe.
Yeah, it's a weird package that feels like a mix of oscillator(s), resonant filter/gate and phase shifter or something of that nature. Lot's of interesting sounds that can all be modulated at once :)
