I have now owned a interchangeable lens camera for and never printed any of my photos. Tomorrow I will fix that and print 43 pictures and give them away to friends and family. Most of the pictures are of memorable moments we have spent together. PS: I like you guys drunk!
I'd love to see a 'best experience' award - something that goes to the camera that sparked the most joy or made the photographer in question most excited to get out and take photos. Honestly I think the focus on results is pretty boring - almost every camera will put out results good enough for most people, but the experience of using one is a major factor I think is often ignored
I agree. This is why I love my Zfc but won't use a Canon. Is the Zfc a close to a perfect camera? Absolutely not. But it's pretty, it's light and compact, and the film-style dials make it really fun to use. On the other hand, something like the Canon R3 might sound really good on paper, but I don't like the ergonomics or interface and this creates frustration which pulls me away from my enjoyment of taking a photo. I'm sure plenty of people will disagree and that's totally fine, but at the end of the day both cameras are capable of producing images I'm happy with, and the user experience on the Zfc is just better for me.

Two categories needed: 1) An affordable pocket camera (under $400) that fits easily in the pants pocket, with a retractable zoom lens, an electronic viewfinder (always needed on sunny days), and a convenient knob for adjusting automatic exposure. My Panasonic LX100 II is the closest thing to this but the lens protrudes too far for pocket storage ("Is that a camera or are you just happy to see me?"). This would be a travel camera that has to be ready to shoot very quickly. 30FPS at 1080P video would be a real bonus. I hate using my iPhone for photos. 2) An award for good ergonomics. This seems to be the last consideration on every camera company's mind. As good as Sony cameras might be, the company just raises its middle finger to the ease of use factor. This should really be a "Worst" award, just to humiliate those companies who such a poor job in this aspect. When it comes to ergonomics, it is like there's no field testing at all, and no company learns from its past cameras. I'll admit that I have big hands and come from a video background although I've had plenty of still cameras. Also, when reviewing cameras, take off mega points for no audio input jack (unless the camera is under $150). Thanks for your wonderful awards show!
I recently just bought an R10 as my first hobbyist/portrait camera(after researching dozens of cameras and watching 100s of videos, many of them yours) so it makes me feel good that it has your approval. I also bought a GX85 as a travel/every day camera to practice on.
Thumbs up on the GX85. Although it's 6 years old, it remains an extremely capable camera. Put a Leica Summilux 15mm f1.7 lens on it, and you'll get some amazing images.
I've been following you both for years! I bought your book and actually started to move from photos for myself into a little side business. I'm only commenting because I love this awards video☺...Also, this year a major retailer actually found my site and bought the rights to a photo of mine to sell in their stores!!! It will pay for my hobby for many years more. I still can't believe it...thank you so much!
I just upgraded from a Sony A7C to a Panasonic GH6 (yup full frame to a micro 4/3 sensor) and for video I am blown away. Everyone who has seen my videos has said they look like they were taken with a professional camera. I am not having the auto focus problems that everyone is mentioning. So far so good.

@Patrick Huynh With a good stabilization, you can achieve long shutter speed (especially at those pretty wide focal lengths) and thus expose correctly without cranking up the ISO.
@patrickhuynh393 Like any lens, it has strengths and weaknesses, but the overall tech and feature list is impressive and a good harbinger of things to come. My plans is to use it for real estate and other commercial stills and video work, where it will prove to be excellent. All lenses could be called garbage if used for things other than what they are designed for. I respectfully think you misunderstood what Tony and Chelsea meant when they chose this lens for high honors.
Knowing how much you have praised the R10 this year, I shouldn't have been surprised at your camera of the year. Still, I keep forgetting about the R10 because I would always get a R7 instead. Yes the R10 is good, but the R7 is so much more for $500 extra.
@@brianmiller921 I'm guessing at the R7 price point there are decent full frames they would rather push people toward, where as the R10 price point full frames are just trash compare to it.
@@brianmiller921 correct I got a deal on a A7C so I ended picking one of those up for $1500. I was plan on getting an r7 but the price and the locked RF mount. I have the Canon M6mII with the 32mp sensor and the A7c with less MP still takes a cleaner image.

jeez, i can't tell how you much i love you guys. first of all, you make it obvious when you're "shilling", and i actually appreciate that. but then, you have accurate assessments of all the gear i care about.
You get the Golden Antique Award for choosing the Miranda. In 1967 my dad bought one. He was looking for an SLR system, but less costly than Nikon. He was using two Leica M3 bodies, M mount lenses and the Visoflex II with a short mount Leica 65mm macro. So he walked out of 47th St. Camera with a Miranda kit, a brick of 36 exp Ektachrome HS, and went to Denali. On our end my wife received his slides from Kodak Labs. All were black, no images. The brand new Miranda had a mirror which didn't flip up with shutter release. Maybe your gold plated Miranda was his copy? My dad bought a Nikon FTN (which I still have) + a Nikkormat as soon as he returned to NY.
Love your work. Been watching, mostly silently in the background for several years now. Always enjoy your presentations. My nomination for best camera of 2022 is my GH5! I'm always learning new things with it. I finally got one in 2020, but it took quite alot of negotiations with my dear wife before I could get it! It will also be "best camera" for 23, 24, 25.... Agree on that. I'd rather the R7 awarded. It's a good alternative to the video awardee, FX30. R10 isn't "affordable" at all, putting into perspective with the actual affordable range. R10 feels like low-midrange, with no other lenses, and no stabilization. It was crippled, even though there was no other model to cannibalize. It's a monopolizing, a downplay for better future pricing and less specs of upcoming cameras.. and then we're back to no lenses! I hope Sony counter punches with better way better offerings. A7c II, new a6000/a7000 updates, better APS-C lenses. It's ironic Chelsea tells Sony "don't get cocky!". Just my two cents though.
July 2013: I bought one of my bucket list cameras, a Canon F-1N. On a trip back home from Charleston, SC, I mentioned to my wife that KEH has an F-1N with the AE Finder FN and the AE Motor Drive FN for sale at $500. She asked "Is that their flagship camera?" I answered "Yes, for the '80s." She said "Buy it". I've checked from time to time and it appears to be holding in value or increasing. December 2013, she bought me a 5D III for Christmas.

A category for professional video camera of the year for professional videographers/cinematographers and not a best camera of the year for what a soccer mom or a family trip camera would be good for, or costing less than $1000 as you identified to be a criterion for choosing Canon R10.
Thanks guys! It might be interesting if you have a 'choice in the brand' award or something, where you choose one particular camera from a brand that you find the most versatile or innovative. Most of us are tied-in to a couple of brands thanks to investing in lenses in that system (or a couple of systems), so looking at where that particular brand is going might be interesting :)

Cannon deserved WTF of the year. I am a second generation Cannon shooter since my dad started me on an AE-1. I recently switched form DSLR to mirrorless and in doing so moved from Canon to Sony. I am an engineer and can't stand that they would cut off third party innovation. It kills competition and affords them the ability to be complacent in the future. Super happy about my A7IV.
I have at various times used Nikon, Canon, and now Sony. If you are budget conscious then KEH has a large variety of great quality used Sony gear. Some of those Zeiss lenses made for Sony are still really nice pieces of glass. Sony's latest lenses, both primes and zooms are light, wicked sharp, and very high in contrast. However, they are also very high in price.
The best part is when the canon fanboys try to defend canon for doing it too. Then they try to argue that they have affordable lenses too haha. Canon has either $2,000+ lenses or dirt cheap crappy lenses. Not supporting 3rd party is a joke and a slap in the face to consumers.
@@mrwashur1991 That is the danger of Canon. Comparing the lineup of Sony, Nikon and Canon you see clearly that Sony is now focusing on the high end, Nikon is very affordable for the quality you get but Canon has very high priced lenses and very cheap plastics lenses. This is a very problematic situation for Canon as Tamron, Sigma and Samyang can steal a lot of revenue of they let them enter the RFmount. I read that Nikon took third party lenses into consideration before designing their Zmount lenses as they are cheap for the quality , so undercutting every incentive for third party manufacturers. Right now for Canon allowing third party is a suicidial act as it will plummet all their revenue they get lenses. At the end of the road this is simply a business.

I wonder what a "best hybrid" or "best consumer cinema camera" category would have looked like. Idk if I'm just super niche for my interests being #2 general stills and #1 narrative cinematography, but those priorities make my preferences differ quite a bit from those interested in most things "videography." For me, it's dynamic range, pixel res, and bit depth over autofocus, sensor size, and stabilization; and APS-C over both MFT and full frame. ANYONE else feel me? lol
When I first became a pro photographer in 1984 Nikon were taken as the serious contenders but I had a hunch and went with Canon. Still using their gear and now not surprisingly, Canon is king and will be forever.
I knew it would be the R10 when you called it affordable at the beginning of the video. Its honestly the most overlooked camera right now, as the R7 tends to steal the show. Which is fair, it is a lot a camera for what it cost too, but the R10 has become my recommendation for people that are just what you described; people that want something more than their smart phone but still don't want to have a fully featured camera that might seem confusing and expensive to them. Still a small market, but there are those that are seeing the value in a "real" camera again. Just really wish Canon would allow Sigma and Tamron into the mix. We all know how Canon basically never took APS-C lenses seriously, and Sigma and Tamron can fill that void for them. Some fast primes, an RF version of the 18-35mm F1.8, some telephotos, I think crop sensor RF cameras with these options would start to take a large chunk of what is left of that market.
I shockingly agree that the R10 is one of the best cameras released this year in terms of price versus specs. The thing is loaded and great for all use cases. Other than this, the runner ups you mentioned were all very good cameras in their own rights. 2022 was a good year for photography gear. And it was funny seeing Chelsea getting tipsy on screen! Tony seemed just like his usual self, so is it less alcohol or higher tolerance? This very important question remains unanswered... That was fun to watch!
The problem with an R10 or any APS-C Canon R is that Canon only makes consumer grade lenses for APS-C. So your APS-C lenses probably leave some image quality on the floor. Add a pricey FF lens... you're cropping, lowering quality, same problem except perhaps for R7 users on super pricey ultra-teles who'd be cropping FF anyway. The best normal photo use with any Canon APS-C has always been with 3rd party premium lenses. And that's a NO for EOS R now. Maybe less of a concern for R10 users at a lower price point, but still an issue. Hopefully factored into the decision, but it would've hard for me to pick the R10 as the top model given that affront to your image quality, even considering the intended use.
The WTF award is my favorite. Always more fun when drinking is involved. This is the first year I can recall when new cameras have come out and I thought "I'm good. I don't need that.". I do photography and very little video. I hope manufacturers will always have cameras designed specifically for photographers. I shoot Sony, but I was glad to see the Fuji X-T5 which is aimed at photographers. Have a great new year!
I do wish some mention had been made of Fujifilm's Instax printers in particular. The cameras are fine, but the ability to buy a small-size and reasonably high resolution for printer for $140 is pretty great, especially since the film is all cross-compatible within the size formats.
@@xoxoAlu I should be getting the Evo soon, which in my mind is going to be even more important as a printer than a camera. Very excited to make prints of a vacation I went on with some friends, and send them copies of the photos I took then with my XT-4.
Still wondering what you think of the Tamron 35-150 mm f2-f2.8 Di III VXD. I'm thinking it could have been a contender for lense of the year last year or this year, but you're not showing it any love. What's up with that?
You could add more lens categories and make a separate video of those winners. Best Ultra Wide, Best Wide Angle, Best Portrait, Best Tele, Best Super Tele or just divide them into subjects categories: Best Landscape Lens, Best Portrait Lens, Best Sports Lens, Best Wildlife Lens.
You have to buy a 200 dollar fan for that one too? .Fuji admitted my xh1 had a hardware problem with audio . They all did. Can't even hear sound on playback. . I feel shammed. My xpro2 has a fused iso wheel they claim is from probably being in the " sun" too much . I like Fuji but every camera I own by them has a problem and they told me sorry it's out of warranty. Ffs

I think that actually the Sony CF card standard is great. Yes the cards are expensive, but the slot is backward compatible with the SD cards. SO I am not a pro, I am completely fine using SD card, if someone needs more speed - buy that Sony CF card. But for example Nikon users should stick to the absurd XQD card, they can not use SD cards.
surprised the fuji xh2s was not mentioned in video. offers both proress raw and blackmagic raw (external).I feeel the fx30 is a good compliment to an exxisting sony ecosystem. but as a single camera the fuji xh2s with it's raw flexbility is my take (I'm still rockin a sony a7sii and red scarlet x though)
Couldn't agree more on your worst camera of the year award. I have the Pentax k-70 and to call the Pentax KF a "new" camera is just ludicrous. Don't believe me? Rent a K-70 and the KF and tell me what differences merited this cameras release.
I think "new" for Pentax is going to be much of this going forward. Not that many consumer models get huge year to year updates. Pentax gets bragging rights to 2022's only DSLR -- if that's a thing to brag about. I bet the main reasons for the update: consumers don't like to buy older models. And they probably ran into parts supply issues. A small redesign to fix that.

I bought the R7 over the R10. Well worth the extra money for IBIS, better video capabilities, and the battery.

For me, the fujifilm xs10 is better than canon r10, for the same price you have more lenses and in body stabilisation

Agree on that. I'd rather the R7 awarded. It's a good alternative to the video awardee, FX30.
R10 isn't "affordable" at all, putting into perspective with the actual affordable range. R10 feels like low-midrange, with no other lenses, and no stabilization. It was crippled, even though there was no other model to cannibalize. It's a monopolizing, a downplay for better future pricing and less specs of upcoming cameras.. and then we're back to no lenses!
I hope Sony counter punches with better way better offerings. A7c II, new a6000/a7000 updates, better APS-C lenses. It's ironic Chelsea tells Sony "don't get cocky!".

July 2013: I bought one of my bucket list cameras, a Canon F-1N. On a trip back home from Charleston, SC, I mentioned to my wife that KEH has an F-1N with the AE Finder FN and the AE Motor Drive FN for sale at $500. She asked "Is that their flagship camera?" I answered "Yes, for the '80s." She said "Buy it". I've checked from time to time and it appears to be holding in value or increasing. December 2013, she bought me a 5D III for Christmas.
My Pentax EI2000 from more than a decade ago had internal (and external) storage. Plus it had a scripting language!

A category for professional video camera of the year for professional videographers/cinematographers and not a best camera of the year for what a soccer mom or a family trip camera would be good for, or costing less than $1000 as you identified to be a criterion for choosing Canon R10.
Thanks guys! It might be interesting if you have a 'choice in the brand' award or something, where you choose one particular camera from a brand that you find the most versatile or innovative. Most of us are tied-in to a couple of brands thanks to investing in lenses in that system (or a couple of systems), so looking at where that particular brand is going might be interesting :)

Cannon deserved WTF of the year. I am a second generation Cannon shooter since my dad started me on an AE-1. I recently switched form DSLR to mirrorless and in doing so moved from Canon to Sony. I am an engineer and can't stand that they would cut off third party innovation. It kills competition and affords them the ability to be complacent in the future. Super happy about my A7IV.
I have at various times used Nikon, Canon, and now Sony. If you are budget conscious then KEH has a large variety of great quality used Sony gear. Some of those Zeiss lenses made for Sony are still really nice pieces of glass. Sony's latest lenses, both primes and zooms are light, wicked sharp, and very high in contrast. However, they are also very high in price.

The best part is when the canon fanboys try to defend canon for doing it too. Then they try to argue that they have affordable lenses too haha. Canon has either $2,000+ lenses or dirt cheap crappy lenses. Not supporting 3rd party is a joke and a slap in the face to consumers.

Comparing the lineup of Sony, Nikon and Canon you see clearly that Sony is now focusing on the high end, Nikon is very affordable for the quality you get but Canon has very high priced lenses and very cheap plastics lenses. This is a very problematic situation for Canon as Tamron, Sigma and Samyang can steal a lot of revenue of they let them enter the RFmount. I read that Nikon took third party lenses into consideration before designing their Zmount lenses as they are cheap for the quality , so undercutting every incentive for third party manufacturers. Right now for Canon allowing third party is a suicidial act as it will plummet all their revenue they get lenses. At the end of the road this is simply a business.
Recently bought the R10 and while it's not the best camera out there, it certainly is the best bang-for-the-buck.

Idk if I'm just super niche for my interests being #2 general stills and #1 narrative cinematography, but those priorities make my preferences differ quite a bit from those interested in most things "videography."
For me, it's dynamic range, pixel res, and bit depth over autofocus, sensor size, and stabilization; and APS-C over both MFT and full frame. ANYONE else feel me? lol

When I first became a pro photographer in 1984 Nikon were taken as the serious contenders but I had a hunch and went with Canon. Still using their gear and now not surprisingly, Canon is king and will be forever.
I knew it would be the R10 when you called it affordable at the beginning of the video. Its honestly the most overlooked camera right now, as the R7 tends to steal the show. Which is fair, it is a lot a camera for what it cost too, but the R10 has become my recommendation for people that are just what you described; people that want something more than their smart phone but still don't want to have a fully featured camera that might seem confusing and expensive to them. Still a small market, but there are those that are seeing the value in a "real" camera again. Just really wish Canon would allow Sigma and Tamron into the mix. We all know how Canon basically never took APS-C lenses seriously, and Sigma and Tamron can fill that void for them. Some fast primes, an RF version of the 18-35mm F1.8, some telephotos, I think crop sensor RF cameras with these options would start to take a large chunk of what is left of that market.
I shockingly agree that the R10 is one of the best cameras released this year in terms of price versus specs. The thing is loaded and great for all use cases. Other than this, the runner ups you mentioned were all very good cameras in their own rights. 2022 was a good year for photography gear. And it was funny seeing Chelsea getting tipsy on screen! Tony seemed just like his usual self, so is it less alcohol or higher tolerance? This very important question remains unanswered... That was fun to watch!
Lense cost a kidney
The problem with an R10 or any APS-C Canon R is that Canon only makes consumer grade lenses for APS-C. So your APS-C lenses probably leave some image quality on the floor. Add a pricey FF lens... you're cropping, lowering quality, same problem except perhaps for R7 users on super pricey ultra-teles who'd be cropping FF anyway.
The best normal photo use with any Canon APS-C has always been with 3rd party premium lenses. And that's a NO for EOS R now. Maybe less of a concern for R10 users at a lower price point, but still an issue. Hopefully factored into the decision, but it would've hard for me to pick the R10 as the top model given that affront to your image quality, even considering the intended use.
I had a feeling that the R10 would get camera of the year. Not surprised.

The WTF award is my favorite. Always more fun when drinking is involved. This is the first year I can recall when new cameras have come out and I thought "I'm good. I don't need that.". I do photography and very little video. I hope manufacturers will always have cameras designed specifically for photographers. I shoot Sony, but I was glad to see the Fuji X-T5 which is aimed at photographers. Have a great new year!

I do wish some mention had been made of Fujifilm's Instax printers in particular. The cameras are fine, but the ability to buy a small-size and reasonably high resolution for printer for $140 is pretty great, especially since the film is all cross-compatible within the size formats.

Still wondering what you think of the Tamron 35-150 mm f2-f2.8 Di III VXD. I'm thinking it could have been a contender for lense of the year last year or this year, but you're not showing it any love. What's up with that?

You could add more lens categories and make a separate video of those winners. Best Ultra Wide, Best Wide Angle, Best Portrait, Best Tele, Best Super Tele or just divide them into subjects categories: Best Landscape Lens, Best Portrait Lens, Best Sports Lens, Best Wildlife Lens.
X-H2s is by far the camera that most impressed me this year.
You have to buy a 200 dollar fan for that one too? .Fuji admitted my xh1 had a hardware problem with audio . They all did. Can't even hear sound on playback. . I feel shammed. My xpro2 has a fused iso wheel they claim is from probably being in the " sun" too much . I like Fuji but every camera I own by them has a problem and they told me sorry it's out of warranty. Ffs

Yes! The R10 is a very cheap great camera, i also recomend the RP it's a very simple FF and cheap camera that fives great results as well
I think that actually the Sony CF card standard is great. Yes the cards are expensive, but the slot is backward compatible with the SD cards. SO I am not a pro, I am completely fine using SD card, if someone needs more speed - buy that Sony CF card. But for example Nikon users should stick to the absurd XQD card, they can not use SD cards.

surprised the fuji xh2s was not mentioned in video. offers both proress raw and blackmagic raw (external).I feeel the fx30 is a good compliment to an exxisting sony ecosystem. but as a single camera the fuji xh2s with it's raw flexbility is my take (I'm still rockin a sony a7sii and red scarlet x though)

Couldn't agree more on your worst camera of the year award. I have the Pentax k-70 and to call the Pentax KF a "new" camera is just ludicrous. Don't believe me? Rent a K-70 and the KF and tell me what differences merited this cameras release.
I think "new" for Pentax is going to be much of this going forward. Not that many consumer models get huge year to year updates. Pentax gets bragging rights to 2022's only DSLR -- if that's a thing to brag about. I bet the main reasons for the update: consumers don't like to buy older models. And they probably ran into parts supply issues. A small redesign to fix that.
