  • In this video, I discuss an idea I've been thinking about for a long time, the difference between alive and dead ideas.
Robert Greene is the author of the New York Times bestsellers The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, The 33 Strategies of War, The 50th Law, Mastery, The Laws of Human Nature, and most recently, The Daily Laws.

There's so much gold in this video but at the moment, I want to say I really appreciate that story of the monk and the master. It's amazing how much difference it makes hearing those words from a monk just repeating them versus a master reflecting on the lesson behind the words as he says them exactly in the same way.
I often smile as I process a tough situation and then suddenly remember a lesson (and the phrasing of it) I was taught earlier in life. Now the words I technically knew carry actual meaning and wisdom when I say them internally or externally.
There's a lot more in this video to appreciate but for now I'll say thank you dear Robert for generously and passionately sharing these videos. They're a treasure. 🙏

Wow , as a 19 yo , who started to get through some of his thoughts , what you are describing is extremely helpful . I started to recently write down my thoughts , and as you said they sound very cliche , ofc it is not the exact same thing you would hear from another person , but it’s this general idea that i have gathered from everywhere and that i have reinterpreted in my own way , i had this wild theory that i was able to "copy" personalities , idk if it’s true or not or if it even makes sense but you just helped clear this out , and for this i am grateful !!
What’s also super interesting is that i found me repeating to myself , quite a few times , that my thinking was unidimensional but when i came to break down this idea , i didn’t even know where to start from because i couldn’t consciously find a relationship between thoughts and dimensions , but now that you have mentioned the 3d example , you just confirmed the relationship i unconsciously established was in fact right . I also was considering one of the solutions to my unidimensional thinking , is to level it up to the second dimension, but now i just got to know that i might need one more dimension ( that is if my thinking is in fact 1d and not 2d )
I just feel like my unconscious is the smart part in me and the conscious is the opposite .

I’ve heard Robert talk about alive and dead ideas in interviews, and I thought I understood it. But this moment taken to really talk about it to the audience was really well done. I was watching with a lot of interest. I can see how I can even apply some of this to managing people on my team that are struggling. Thank you!

The internet allows me to receive ideas that are very rare in my immediate environment. I don’t like to think of the idea of voyeurism - of watching Robert’s videos and reading his books, knowing all about his life and putting him on a pedestal while I am just another anonymous ghost watching along. But I feel a deep appreciation for his work and the technology that grants us access to it, and my way of using his expressions is to embody the spirit of his words and pass them along, amalgamating higher principles and ideas that make me a fuller person. Thank you for continuing your creative endeavours!!!!

[4:27] ...what's very noticeable in the 21st century is we're trying to hurry children up into adulthood, we're trying to immerse them into technology, in social media, we're kinda trying to make them mature before their age, an 8-year-old now is probably the equivalent of a 4-year-old back in my day... (I think 8 and 4 are used interchangeably and what you meant is "a 4-year-old now is probably the equivalent of an 8-year-old back in my day")

Something weird I’ve noticed is I repeat the same life patterns every seven years. I’m only 23 so I don’t have much evidence, or my brain will make connections where there aren’t any. But for example, at the beginning of each cycle, a major theme is locus of control. In the previous one it was free will vs fate. In this one it’s been ‘the obstacle is the way’ vs compulsion. I’m now noticing myself picking up an irritating pattern I had when I was sixteen. Sometimes it seems like general themes that can have different results. Other times it feels like I’m required to repeat the same mistakes verbatim.

It’s the struggle for money that makes it hard to let creativity fully take over. I pursued two different unique ventures in my twenties but have never been able to fully realize them bc of the need for money (to pay bills and survive). Currently applying to jobs for a stable income so I can pursue my next venture with more peace. My advice to people in their early twenties is focus on money so you can have freedom to create when the time comes

Perhaps this relates to fairy tales, Jungian psychology and the collective unconscious. Why children are featured prominently... we say the witch or step mother was jealous of the step-daughter, perhaps child doesn't have to represent beauty... but rather innocence and childlike nature.
Snow White coveted having her childhood coveted and preserved. Hansel & Gretel. Cinderella. The children get away or overcome at the end, allowing us to safeguard that nature into adulthood (they storyteller doing this).
It was an idea that came to mind as you spoke.

I believe Robert hits right on the nail when he says that adults are jealous of children, and trying to get them to grow faster.
Think about a little boy who is actually very mature for his age; that boy will get every kind of positive reinforcement from adults, complimenting him for his maturity as a sign of him being superior to other kids who actually act their own age, and encouraging him to keep working towards becoming even more “mature” as a kid, since he is being flattered by so many adults because of his behavior.
Perhaps, this is not such a good idea after all… kids need to experience their childhood.
