    Wow. Working my way back into the older episodes. Far better than what I could do, but your video production nowadays is 100% finely tuned and better. Love to see the growth and progress you have made.

      Well thank you Hank! I knew nothing about video making when I started but just tried learning as I go. :-) I appreciate the kind words my friend.

    Well it’s the Yellow Hammer, and you definitely nailed it Sir. The intro is a much welcomed addition. Much more personable. Very nice office area. Great setup. All aspects of
    this video is a win win. The intro is a game changer. Thank you Matt.

    One of my favorites for the native specs here in the south. Wet or dry, can’t go wrong. Really enjoy your videos. Keith

      Cool, thanks for watching! I imagine this fly fishes similar to a partridge and yellow (which is more well known up north).

    Love your videos, Ian Rutter’s book Great Smoky Mountains National Park Anglers Companion shows a picture of a Yellarhammer. I’d love to see that one tied, if you take requests. It be good for your Smoky Mountain fly series.

      Yes! I'm definitely going to tie some Yellarhammer nymphs. I just don't have the dyed yellow grouse he calls for yet. But I'll get it soon. Lots of versions of these out there but I really like the one in Ian's book.

    One of these days you should try a skykomish sunrise. Pretty good wet fly especially for steelhead. Theres only a few videos on how to tie one
    P.s. I love that you still have buddy jesus in the video haha. From now on any video you post, I'm going to keep an eye out for buddy jesus lol

      Ha! And quite apropos for you and your blog. I tied another Great Smoky Mountain pattern tonight-- a Yellow Palmer. I remember it being recommended for the Tuckaseegee and Oconaluftee. That will be my Friday video. Thanks for watching!

    You do a great job on your videos. I wouldn’t mind seeing a clip of you catching a fish on the the fly you tied at the beginning or end of the video.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Michael! I've tried that before, and will keep trying but I don't always fish with my GoPro on, and I don't always catch much anyway. :-) But someday I'll have the right fly on, at the right time, for a video that I haven't made yet.

    Is this a summer fall pattern or fall spring pattern?

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly Dale, I wouldn't say it's more effective one time over another. This isn't really the "true" Yellerhammer you hear so much about in the Smokey Mountains, which used the feathers from a yellow flicker (a protected woodpecker type bird). I'd fish this one as I would any spider type wet fly, such as a Partridge and Orange. And as such, it could be effective any time of year.

  • @samh4232

    Could put an orange head on it and it would look like a different bug.

    Looks nothing like the yaller hammer I’ve seen here in the smokes. More like a traditional wet and not crude. I’ve not seen any yellow fly not catch fish here, or in the CNF.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree 100%! Maybe this is why in the FFF Pattern Index they call it a "Yellow" hammer, instead of the Smoky Mountain pronunciation of Yellerhammar. Don Kirk has about three versions in his GSM book, which I've really been wanting to tie, but so far my dyeing yellow softhackle feathers have turned out terrible. Do you tie a traditional yellerhammer nymph? If so, any recommendation of where to get the feathers??

    • @serpent6710
      @serpent6710 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did tie some years ago, and as near as I remember, I used a smallish goose wing feather dyed with rit then split and the tips clipped flat. The real yallerhammer is a very crude looking fly, and indeed, they came out looking just that. Had to be twenty years ago now.

      I agree I grew up in the cnf near the tellico river and I've never saw a " yeller hammer " fly tied like this.

      I know this is a little old and probably will never get seen but I live on the TN/NC border and I’m right there with y’all. The only yellow hammer I’d ever heard of until this video is illegal to have. 😅
