IM(optimistic)O, he asks asks dumb questions to LSV and BDM in order to allow the new players to hear the answers to the questions there thinking of. In a sense, he's like a voice for the noobs.
That's exactly what he's doing. He does it every tournament he does commentary for and it was really nice when I was a beginner and didn't understand why certain triggers were being called on. Especially since Innistrad block had weird things you had to call priority and resolution for.
He is there almost entirely to ask things that would be obvious to veterans but not obvious to noobies. He is the pro tour historian. You must not have watched very many pro tours and heard him ramble off dead accurate placings, decks, players, game results and quotes. Basically data that no one but he has memorized. He has massive insight to the pro community and at this point, his experience in working at protours is irreplaceable since people of his level of experience just don't exist.
Evolve is a trigger with an intervening if clause meaning it checks the power of the creature that entered the battlefield twice, once to trigger the ability, another to check if the power is actually higher. Since tragic slip is -13/-13 the reckoner is a -10/-10 the last moment it is on the field before it dies to state-based effects. So when the trigger resolves, it checks if the reckoner has higher power/tougness. since it is a -10/-10 last time it was on the field, the trigger does nothing.
Eric Froehlich vs Tom Martell Round 1 0:49 Ben Stark vs Joel Larsson Round 2 13:11 Round 3 23:48 Eric Froehlich vs Tom Martell Round 4 39:28 Round 5 58:30 Ben Stark vs Joel Larsson Round 5 1:14:43
I personally believe that a person shuffles your cards like that to get you steamed and take you off your game. So many ways to psych out your opponents
the innistrad block will rotate out late next year when the expansion sets come out. then it'll be the return to ravnica block, the 2014 core set, and whatever block comes out late 2014.
He's doing it with the evolve trigger on the stack, and because tragic slip reduces power and toughness instead of destroying it, the boros reckoner becomes a -10/-10 before dying. You might have also heard them say that the evolve trigger checks the last known value.
You're correct in that the evolve trigger wouldn't happen, but not because of those reasons. Basically what happens is the evolve trigger goes on the stack. Martell slips the Reckoner in response, and it gets -13/-13. Since the creature dies, evolve will check last known information as Boros Reckoner as a -10/-10. I believe if you were to terror the Recokner in response, the trigger would still happen since last known information is 3/3 on the creature.
A lot of decks in this Pro Tour run Boros Reckoner, Azorius Charm and Boros Charm. On a turn where Boros Reckoner is taking damage, you can use Azorius Charm to give all your creatures lifelink, and Boros Charm to give make all your creatures indestructible. Due to how Boros Reckoner is worded, you can then have it target itself with its damage effect over and over again, each time gaining X life from lifelink, effectively gaining infinite life.
It's to keep your opponent from memorizing which card is where in your hand. That way if your opponent plays something that lets them discard a card from your hand, they may not hit one of your better cards.
The evolve trigger happens. in response, tragic slip brings the 2nd reckoner to -13/-13 As the evolve trigger resolves it checks the power and toughness of the new creature and find that it isn't bigger than the gyre sage. So the evolve fizzles. :)
no because think about it as a species a legendary creature is one who used to be part of a species but either evolved, mutated, or in the lore did something to make him/her recognizable
Im seriously like so confused, how are they bringing these cards out so fast and theres like no lands out, please explain w/out the obvious shots I'm opening myself up to :)
Burning tree-emissary also adds mana to your mana pool when it comes into play. Also people at a professional level won't play lots of incredibly high cmc creatures like a lot of casual players do. Of course there are exceptions to this. Hope the last one wasn't too obvious.
because by just taking a largely irrelevant hit and supreme verdicting next turn he can get a 3-for-1 instead of a 3-for-2. latest reply ever, you're welcome
He unsummoned the Hellkite in response to Azorius Charm to make sure that Ben Stark could not use Nephalia Drownyard to mill Thundermaw Hellkite from the top of Joel Larsson's library.
Just seeing aurelia is awesome she's favorite card ever she's so cool and what got me onto mtg angels my favorite creature type not the most powerful but super cool
card advantage, if u got snapcaster and u mill urself an instant or sorcery card, its like drawing 2 cards except one's in ur hand and one's in ur graveyard
Though i like that they show the cards in hand, i think i would like it if they showed the cards as they resolve on the stack their hand camera's don't have the glare on the cards that the ones on the field do.
It's actually really common in advertising and in fiction to pair an expert with a noob. The expert has an excuse to explain, which allows less sophisticated people in the audience to go on a sort of journey in knowledge. Also, the experts in the audience get to enjoy feeling superior.
the reckoner is not broken, is just very good in this format, but is not broken, try it in modern maybe just to see how is exiled with a path, or helixed in the right moment, the true broken card is the boros charm
I may be wrong, but in froelichs position I would have played hellrider mountain, and evolved the gyre sage to play the second hellrider then attacked with both of them. at worst all the reckoners would have been destroyed and it deals 4 off the bat anyway. plus, the next turn with aurelia in play it is insane. That may just be the influence of seeing the other players hand though.
I think it would have been great if jace and tamio were used together, you can mill yourself and if you altimate tamio you can get all of the cards that you milled when you milled yourself. Then add ons like snapcaster and other cards. No maximum hand size. Keep getting cards then you can counter every thing that the opponent has. Your safe. What do you think? Good combo or what?
hoodi hd innistrad rotates out of standard when the next block comes out after ravnica if your talking type 2 then no innistrad but no one knows when ravnica cyles because we have no official release date of the next block
I saw rootbound crag, sacred foundry, a normal mountain, and clifftop, so four. He had enough to play both hellriders. The post swing board state is what I would be most interested in, and whether eric expects the blasphemous act. I'm still not sure why he didn't go for the double rider over his own play, it presents a much more aggresive board state.
Not how it works basically the word "if" on evolve is what changes this the evolve trigger goes on the stack then it checks the creature when the trigger to evolve resolves when checking the creature it was dead so there was no creature thus no evolve trigger
your not wrong, though you might wanna be a little more ambitious, if from that position he swung out he would have dealt 8 direct and present lethal. from there martell would setup blocks, I can't read what martell would do from there perfectly, but he would HAVE to get those hellriders off the field. He would lose at least one reckoner, more likely two, and have the gyre sage or reckoner plus aurelia the following turn. Martell's drop from there would rely on a top deck and even then it's slim
Ben i feel sorry for him when he show the first 3 cards of him lib, and then draw the 4th and 5th, he could had sent thunder on top upkeep draw Sphinx.s Rev for 6, go to 4 and then just take game over one last miss play, i think he lost hes optimism at that point, where a player as his calibre should had being calm and even risk all. Augur some times can be a powerful creature to block and sometimes can just solve all your prob's.
I honestly don't get why tom didnt use the 3 damage to kill the gyre sage and tragic slip the loxodon. could have saved him more time. would have wiped out everything on the board.
In game 4, when Martell casts Tragic Slip to stop evolve, evolve would still happen because evolve triggers when the creature enters the battlefield, Martell casts Tragic Slip AFTER the Reckoner enters the battlefield, evolve goes on the stack and happens regardless of what happens to the creature after it enters the battlefield.
LSV actually knows what he's talking about and provides really keen insight for the duels; refreshing!
you know it's a great commentator when you learn things. Current pros in the booth is the best thing to happen to coverage!!!
@7:40 the Harlem Shake reference makes me feel ancient
Man this was awesome. I'm glad youtube exists because who knows when this would be on ESPN again
I've never watched pro players before. This was surprisingly exciting.
God I loved these manabases. So colorful.
I love how salty efro got when Tom stomped his ass
After about two minutes I was like: "Wait a minute... is that LSV talking?"
I love his commentary, definitely one of my favourite players too.
Rich: yep, spear it, it goes down.
Luis *very quietly* That's the spear it
IM(optimistic)O, he asks asks dumb questions to LSV and BDM in order to allow the new players to hear the answers to the questions there thinking of. In a sense, he's like a voice for the noobs.
'Geist is a pretty good card' 'Yeah, that it is' dem high level conversation xD
More people need to do this. Thank you ElMoss64
That's exactly what he's doing. He does it every tournament he does commentary for and it was really nice when I was a beginner and didn't understand why certain triggers were being called on. Especially since Innistrad block had weird things you had to call priority and resolution for.
The most satisfying moment in these games is at 35:55 when Joel picks up his fucking graveyard finally.
He is there almost entirely to ask things that would be obvious to veterans but not obvious to noobies. He is the pro tour historian. He has massive insight to the pro community and at this point, his experience in working at protours is irreplaceable since people of his level of experience just don't exist.
And a sweet ring. A lot of subtle personality. I like his style.

the guy has the ability to make a living with a game most people consider a fun hobby. that's cool as hell in my opinion.
Eric Froehlich vs Tom Martell
Round 1 0:49
Ben Stark vs Joel Larsson
Round 2 13:11
Round 3 23:48
Eric Froehlich vs Tom Martell
Round 4 39:28
Round 5 58:30
Ben Stark vs Joel Larsson
Round 5 1:14:43
dafuq? seriously? theres a stark and a martell playing there?
+Steven Lopez Rios don't tell the Lannisters
Yes it is a shock land. shock lands are considered both collors they represent, sacred foundry is a mountain and also a plain
I personally believe that a person shuffles your cards like that to get you steamed and take you off your game. So many ways to psych out your opponents
the innistrad block will rotate out late next year when the expansion sets come out. then it'll be the return to ravnica block, the 2014 core set, and whatever block comes out late 2014.
yeah, and he is also the best public speaker of them, so is good at filling the silence.
He's doing it with the evolve trigger on the stack, and because tragic slip reduces power and toughness instead of destroying it, the boros reckoner becomes a -10/-10 before dying. You might have also heard them say that the evolve trigger checks the last known value.

people like you make youtube so easy! :D
I want to make a Aristocrat deck...they look so badass, and play well.
LSV on the Commentary is just nice :)
The evolve trigger happens.
in response, tragic slip brings the 2nd reckoner to -13/-13
As the evolve trigger resolves it checks the power and toughness of the new creature and find that it isn't bigger than the gyre sage.
So the evolve fizzles. :)
If there are 1 boros reckoner for each player and both player are lower than 13, witch trigger start first if a player cast blasphemous act?
Por favor, existe algum con legendas em portugues? e3les falam muito rapido e não consigo acompanhar!!
So are mono decks crap now? Or are they playing multicolored decks because of the current block? Or both?
Stark: Spear it
LSV (Very quietly): That's the spear-it
best 2 matches of magic i have ever seen
no because think about it as a species a legendary creature is one who used to be part of a species but either evolved, mutated, or in the lore did something to make him/her recognizable

Burning tree-emissary also adds mana to your mana pool when it comes into play.

LSV, you are the god of puns.
If a card says 'Tap: add (mana) to your mana pool, could you get that land from your deck if not your hand?
At 33:10, why didn't Ben just dissipate the Maw???
because by just taking a largely irrelevant hit and supreme verdicting next turn he can get a 3-for-1 instead of a 3-for-2.
latest reply ever, you're welcome
You answered 3 months late, here I come 7 months later and reply to you.
Guess I hold the record then.
Well, I don't even remember watching this game lmfao!
ModernMinded 8 months after your comment, I have arrived. Your move.
Im hoping this comment thread continues :D
at 26:40 whyJoel Larsson unsummon his Thundermaw Hellkite?i dont understand.
He unsummoned the Hellkite in response to Azorius Charm to make sure that Ben Stark could not use Nephalia Drownyard to mill Thundermaw Hellkite from the top of Joel Larsson's library.
how does the combo work exactly?
how is the act dealing 13 dmg to the player
Just seeing aurelia is awesome she's favorite card ever she's so cool and what got me onto mtg angels my favorite creature type not the most powerful but super cool
card advantage, if u got snapcaster and u mill urself an instant or sorcery card, its like drawing 2 cards except one's in ur hand and one's in ur graveyard
Yeah. And it would make sense, anyway, how common are minotaur wizards lol?
It deals 13 damage to Boros Reckoner which can then do that much damage to target player or creature.
Though i like that they show the cards in hand, i think i would like it if they showed the cards as they resolve on the stack their hand camera's don't have the glare on the cards that the ones on the field do.
can someone explain me why joel larsson target himself to put a card from library to grave with jace?, it's for snapcaster?
It's actually really common in advertising and in fiction to pair an expert with a noob. The expert has an excuse to explain, which allows less sophisticated people in the audience to go on a sort of journey in knowledge. Also, the experts in the audience get to enjoy feeling superior.
37:51 - HBO's flagship fantasy show would appreciate this matchup.
Stark vs Martell hah
On ESPN 8, "The Ocho"
what was that guy using to mill joel so much?
how much red mana did he have?
Someone can explain why Gyre Sage doesn't evolve with the 2nd reckoner ? 46:15
Eric's face when he lost.. lol
the reckoner is not broken, is just very good in this format, but is not broken, try it in modern maybe just to see how is exiled with a path, or helixed in the right moment, the true broken card is the boros charm
I would punch Ben Stark if he shuffled my deck like that >_>
shielded passage on theirs. SOO CLUTCH!
Whenever Boros Reckoner is dealt damage, it deals that much damage to target creature or player.
Blasphemous Act deals 13 damage to each creature, and protection from red prevents that damage. It's not quite wrath.
Good point. Also, didn't mean to offend any noobs out there by saying their questions are dumb. My bad.
WatchingTom Martell is painful ! *Pins in eyes!*
he was asking the judge if he gets a penalty after not killing his augurs
It will trigger on the opponents Reckoner first.
I don't understand where the infinite life thing comes into play
hoodi hd innistrad rotates out of standard when the next block comes out after ravnica if your talking type 2 then no innistrad but no one knows when ravnica cyles because we have no official release date of the next block
I got it ,thank you.
Why do they flip through their hands over and over like that?
I saw rootbound crag, sacred foundry, a normal mountain, and clifftop, so four. He had enough to play both hellriders. The post swing board state is what I would be most interested in, and whether eric expects the blasphemous act. I'm still not sure why he didn't go for the double rider over his own play, it presents a much more aggresive board state.
No, Tom sacs a doomed traveler to cartel aristocrat, makes a spirit and then blocks aurelia on attack step 2.
around 20 minutes, LSV explains it.
i'd reckon you're right
Not how it works
basically the word "if" on evolve is what changes this the evolve trigger goes on the stack then it checks the creature when the trigger to evolve resolves when checking the creature it was dead so there was no creature thus no evolve trigger
Thragtusk should've been a legendary creature
Ben Stark... Any `A song of Ice and Fire´ fans here, thinking of Benjen Stark?
'Semfifinals'?
Yep
It looks like Froehlich and Martell made it to the semifinals by eating their opponents.
Oh thanks, it seemed a little weird.
Tom could make a Spirit token off of Doomed Traveler and still have six creature and be on 14 life
your not wrong, though you might wanna be a little more ambitious, if from that position he swung out he would have dealt 8 direct and present lethal. from there martell would setup blocks, I can't read what martell would do from there perfectly, but he would HAVE to get those hellriders off the field. and then just take game over one last miss play, i think he lost hes optimism at that point, where a player as his calibre should had being calm and even risk all. Augur some times can be a powerful creature to block and sometimes can just solve all your prob's.
Use a comma every once in a while. Please?
It's more because multicolor decks are so easy to play because of the lands available. RDW is stil a very real deck.
Exactly.
you do realize he´s the pro tour champion...
Not to mention that 40 grand that he won no big deal or anything
these are pro guys. They don't give a shit about what happen to the cards being shuffled that way lol
xD this is from the time when the harlem shake was still a thing
I honestly don't get why tom didnt use the 3 damage to kill the gyre sage and tragic slip the loxodon. could have saved him more time. would have wiped out everything on the board.
In game 4, when Martell casts Tragic Slip to stop evolve, evolve would still happen because evolve triggers when the creature enters the battlefield, Martell casts Tragic Slip AFTER the Reckoner enters the battlefield, evolve goes on the stack and happens regardless of what happens to the creature after it enters the battlefield.
Yes but if your opponent has a reckoner too then you die b4 he does.
Why didn't he verdict an the resto..... he would have his life and have blocker for any haste, an then he could sphinx the next turn
Why? Just because you dont like playing against it?
Please utilize periods.
