I have watched the whole Raducanu vs Sabalenka match and I am of the opinion that in that match she showed why she was able to win the US Open. She was holding her own against Sabalenka and it was only her serve which let her down. She was doing all the right shots and showed the ability to think on her feet. In fact, she was able to outplay Sabalenka during some stretches in the second set. IMO she would have beaten the Sabalenka of 2022. She had 10 break points but was only able to convert 1 because of some clutch serving by Sabalenka. IMO Raducanu will beat some Top 10 players before the year is over.

1:59 Andy is wrong. Emma won 10 matches in a row for the US Open. 3 qualifying and the 7 standard rounds. The other crazy part was Leylah Fernandez (ranked 73) made it to that final v Raducanu. A truly batshit crazy Slam.

This was a great conversation. I've thought that her father could be a part of the problem. It'd be nice if people didn't need to be told not to "be mean", but that's just not the world we live in, especially online.

Raducanu actually played Landisville (a $100K ITF) then played a WTA 125 in Chicago lossing to Tauson in that final. She literally played 5 tour level matches before winning the U.S. open going 3-2 in those matches (all 3 wins were at Wimbledon). I don’t ever see her winning a major again. I do believe she caught Lightening in a bottle but I see that she can be a top 50 player for most of her career if she stays healthy.

I think having 3 surgeries in 10 days, at such a young age, has made her cautious with the scheduling. She's only started back at the end of 2023. Time will be her learning curve.

She is an absolute enigma - and such a young one at that. The year she won USO she made the 4th round at Wimbledon and was beaten by poor respiration(?) as much as anything else. But showed then that she had game. USO qualifying probably did her more good than harm. But ISTR that in her 7 main draw matches, she never faced a single top10 opponent. I think Bencic was the closest. Next thing we know is that she'd won it.... and then changed her coach.... and then changed again.... and then the next one. Then came injuries.
Whether the stars aligned for her for those two weeks or if she'll really become seeded again I'll never know. I'd like to think so but I've been so wrong before...

I think her achievement at the 2021 U.S. Open was one of the greatest achievements in the history of the game. To come out of qualifying and win a major?!? Can’t make this stuff up. Pretty unfathomable.

Now understanding a but of what young tennis players have to overcome to even win a small title, I decided to give Emma time to develop her game. I agree that Emma needs matches. That's why it would benefit her to play small tournaments...even Challenger level.

IMO she faces so much scrutiny and maybe even hate partly because of enormous endorsements and coverage she gets. The latter two are definitely not proportionate to her overall achievements (US Open is undeniably a great story but it's been 1,5 year ffs - Andreescu also won GS, had better record after that and wasn't promoted as much as Raducanu is). I say: leave her be, treat her as her current ranking shows (also regarding the amount of coverage you give her), and she probably will emerge again on one of the tournaments. Then she will earn the love of her fans and we will not feel as if you are pushing her down our throats.

She should be playing every week to build up her match fitness and to grow as a player. They hype is off the charts here in the UK but Raducanu is way off the pace based on what I saw at the Australian Open and now at Indian Wells. The branding work is great in terms of generating income but she would benefit from some time out of the limelight so she can focus on her tennis. Her dad should perhaps step back and let the pros get to work with her.

Andy, I get what you are saying about Raducanu playing challenger events to gain confidence but what is your now on Radicanu’s progress now that she has played Indian Wells? Yes, she has still not won three rounds in a row and yes, her second round opponent retired but I thought she played a very good and competitive match against the world number two Sabalenka.

She is far too good to play Challenger events. She's going to get wildcards all year, she's just needs to get through 12 months of tennis and see where her ranking is at the end of it.

I know some people like Roddick mean well when they're throwing out advice about Emma -- but idk that people know what it's like to walk in her shoes -- 19 year old creates history by becoming the first person to have ever won a grand slam title as a qualifier (men and women's side), being thrust into the limelight, difficult father who's guidance is suspect, and she also looks like a supermodel so there are all those jealous trolls who just hate on her for that - not to mention she has to deal with all the professional envy from her peers on tour. Just get off her back. Also, Jon Wetheim, you wouldn't turn down a Tiffany sponsorship if they offered it to you.

I feel like, directly after the tournament, I heard a lot of talk acknowledging leyla Fernandez's run as the more impressive one. But I feel like Fernandez's run will be lost to history, while Raducanu's will live on forever. Sport can be so cruel.

Of course ER's achievement forever goes down in history! She's the last person standing to win the GS & as a qualifier, in straight sets & without even going into any tie-breaker in 10 matches!!! Additionally, Leylah LOST to Emma, which by tennis math means Emma indirectly beats all Leylah's opponents as well...) Last person standing is the deserving GS Champ! (And Don't say oh there was no top 10... if top 10 was so great, then they should be in the final & won it... but it wasn't so... & fact is many top 10 haven't even won a GS!)

She's never beaten a top 10 player. There are a lot of lower ranked players who would have a good shot at winning a major if they didnt have to beat the top players in the world. Andy himself would have at least a dozen slams if he didnt have to play prime Federer.

Your wrong Andy understanding Emma's mentality she has to play top players that is how she gets her confidence and how she showed this in last match against Sabalenka she started working out how to play against her in second set and it would have been interesting if it had gone to a third set. There are signs that I saw that showed what she has got.she has the ability to play shots that she played in US Open and more and if she gets a run I think you will see a big improvement on that. So no dropping back for Emma it would be like loosing because that is the fighter that she is she is not a Sabalenka screamer that is why people do not understand her true quiet determination
