Semi-Local here, though I do not have a Scooby an what he said, I can offer some general advice. Meadow Hall at the end of the yellow route is an expansive shopping mall and has some interesting areas such as a market esque area near the food hall (I forgot its actual name), do be warned it is quite large and as such is somewhat easy to get lost in, it also has a very distinct turquoise roof. Try to avoid staying too long as the spice heads do become aggressive after around 4pm. The extremity of the blue route is best avoided as the only real area of interest is crystal peaks which is just meadow hall but worse and as of recent overrun by large hordes of youths at the weekends which has gotten the police concerned, additionally the area (birley lane and onwards) does have some issues with drugs with with Westfield school implementing checks to stop students from smuggling drugs into school after two busts one involving a friend of mine and some of his mates getting plastered in the back of art class and the other involving a stash of weed In the crawl space above the humanities ground floor men's toilets. Rothervally is alright and does have wakeboarding, golfing, and a large children's play area (there is a free foot entrance beyond Westfield school and direct cars, if you wish to go cycling I would recommend parking on the road back there and riding in as opposed to using the paid vehicle entrance as there is a cycle path just before the old railway bridge that can take you all the way to Chesterfield if you so wish. Do not take the purple rout if you wish to keep all your organs are extremely stabby, like seriously don't go there. The Park Hill complex (the massive hoofing structure that overlooks the train station) has significantly improved over recent years, however many locals still fear it, it is probably fine but I do not go there unless completely necessarily. Weston park museum is very good, I haven't visited in a while but they used to have a rip off spore display where you would design a creature and release it into a simulated world only to see it die within 5 minutes but that was like 10 years ago. The burger van outside the University is good, as is sundaes gellato who do very nice waffles. Try not to live too close to a river as they do flood fairly often (every couple years) with one being narrowly avoided this year, pretty major ones a couple of years ago, and the entirety of the city centre being flooded in 07. As for near by sights, chesterfield has a weird cathedral tower, Doncaster has a defunct stadium, and the Pennines are a short-medium length drive away do be warned if you go; you will get wet and cold so pack a change of clothes, a drink, and especially In winter a thick coat as it may seem fine right up until the point you reach the peaks and get blasted with drizzle and -5° wind chill. Overall a wonderful city but do not expect it to be all sunshine and rainbows as post industrial decline is omnipresent in all of the northern cities.
