"Real men eat meat, and going vegan makes you a weak soy boy."
We have this idea that to be a real man you have to eat animal flesh, and that by going vegan you are suddenly emasculating yourself. So, is this actually true?

There is nothing manly about killing animals, and there is nothing manly about lacking empathy. It’s time to do better, because nobody should die for someone else’s fragile masculinity.

@Martin Svensson The way you think is toxic. Men are not the only ones who provide food for their families nowadays. Women work for their families too, not just men. Not everyone can even physically eat meat due to their health. So by force, those men with families would have to bring other sorts of foods to the table to feed them. We need to eat wheat, fruits, and vegetables too. Think about that. In our diets, meat is not the most important thing to consume.

I'm beginning to feel the effects physically, whilst emotionally grappling with the moral implications of taking life so that I may live. I'm honestly stumbling in the dark, because I have no idea where to start, but I know this is a lifestyle change that I MUST incorporate, for my health and sanity. I found myself able to cycle quickly with loads of uphills to the gym on a BMX and when training I was faster and fitter than any of the other guys at the gym. My recovery times were minimal, and I always felt energised afterwards. In India if one person tells another: "YOU MUST DO THIS", the other may say: "IS THIS A VEDIC INJUNCTION, THAT I HAVE TO FOLLOW WITHOUT ANY ARGUMENT? ". Vedic transcendental knowledge is knowledge from beyond this universe and comes from the spiritual world, from Lord... Originally there was only one Veda. People were so intelligent and had such sharp memories, that by once hearing from the lips of the spiritual master they would understand. They would immediately grasp the whole purport. But 5000 years ago Vyasadeva put the Vedas in writing for the people in this age, Kali-yuga. He knew, that eventually the people would be short-lived, their memories would be very poor and their intelligence would not be very sharp. He divided the Vedas into four. The four Vedas and the Upanisads (part of the Vedas), the 18 Puranas, the Mahabharata (the history of India) are all part of the Vedic literature. Summarised Vedic knowledge is called the Vedanta-sutra and the Vedanta-sutra is perfectly explained by the writer (Vyasadeva) himself in Srimad-Bhagavatam. We request to try to understand the explanation of all Vedic knowledge from Bhagavad-gita and from Srimad-Bhagavatam.

Definitely a major hurdle for a lot of men to overcome the perception of meat eating being tied up in the whole idea of manliness.
It really blinds so many to the logical arguments against meat eating, factory farming etc.
Ironically it's the best aspects of our character (logic, empathy etc) that supports embracing a meat free lifestyle and only weakness, ignorance and insecurities that oppose it.

I am a vegetarian now and have been for a month and a half. I think it is stupid and idiotic to sell that "Real Men Eat Meat!!!!" idea. Aside from the choice of vegetarianism or veganism, what if that man CAN'T eat meat due to medical issues or allergies??? Seriously, society needs to stop feminizing men for choosing to become vegetarian or vegan. Today, 1/5 men are choosing not to eat meat. Long before, it was 1/20 men who have chosen not to eat meat. When will society learn to leave men and their vegetarianism or veganism alone and to stop telling them they need to eat meat??? I don't miss the meat at all whatsoever but I don't believe I can do the vegan thing.

Furthermore i agree big game/trophy hunting is disgusting but hunting animals for the table is entirely different.

Veganism isnt for everyone. Ive seen people that have lost too much weight. My cousin is "vegan" even though shes ended up in the hospital for it. So now she eats eggs fish and chicken here and there. Shes in college and when she started, she would get horrible migraines but once she incorporated eggs again, it helped tremendously. Not everyone can eat meat either though. Especially regular processed abused meat. I personally will always need meat but I know I dont need it everyday. I like greens fruits and veggies too so I have a balance. I would say paleo is the way to go and would help a lot of people. America is so used to stuffing their faces multiple times a day in hefty servings. Its changing but needs to change more. Also its not about being manly or what the hell ever, I think it should be about tending to your own body...

I would say the act of shooting rifles in hunting is what makes it masculine not necessarily the act of killing an animal, itself (so does the camouflage clothes, since it ads to the whole military image). Another part of masculinity is being able to protect/defend your family and provide a sense of safety and security. And a man who knows how to use a gun and has one can better defend his family from both unwanted animals and humans. And if a man knows how to hunt, it's hard to argue that he doesn't know how to use a gun. Historically, men where the ones to join the military, go to wars, if a fight in a bar broke out, the man would be expected to protect his woman, you had men dueling for women, the whole prince saves the princes trope, etc... In the majority of countries that have the draft, men are required to serve in the military but not women. I do think that sometimes violence is necessary and men are usually the ones who are expected to provide it and put their lives at risk in the process. And hunting/being a hunter kind of helps create that image of someone who would be willing and able to kill for you if it was necessary in order to save your life without actually putting the man at risk (or I guess at relatively low risk. Hunters do sometimes get killed by animals. Accidents do happen), which activities such as going to war to fight ISIS might do. Or not as life changing as joining the police or the CIA. All of those activities would, of course, be more useful and might actually result in your protecting someone.

    Dear Ed,
I want to express how much you've changed my prescription. I adopted a plant based diet about 7 years ago because of Nutritionfacts.org. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and a low saturated fat diet is exactly what I needed to save myself. It's worked like a charm, I haven't had symptoms in years, but I always new I was doing it for selfish reasons. I felt good that I was reducing animal suffering and helping save the planet, but I was doing it all for myself. It wasn't until a few months ago when I discovered your channel that my prescription changed.
I think it was comfortable to not consider myself an ethical vegan for the same reason people eat meat. It took the emotion out of it. I wasn't angry at people for eating meat as long as my reasons were selfish. I was disgusted by the sight of meat, but that was my emotion, other people weren't obligated to feel the same in my eyes.
I can't say I'm happy with my new found ethics, because I am currently finding it hard to cope with seeing animal products around me at all. I feel judgmental of my friends and family for not caring more, and I'm more angry at the world. But I also know I can turn that anger into fuel and help change the world. I think I'll join an activist group once the pandemic has eased up.
Thank you for all that you do.

@@idk3626 I was vegan for a year, so I can only speak from personal experience, and to be honest it's not optimal health or nutrition. Giving up high quality meats for substituted foods deteriorated me, i couldn't figure out what was going on till i did some research on human development. Long story short we are omnivores. We can survive just eating fruits and plants but the machine that is our bodys will run like an automobile that was neglected routine services. The body knows what it needs to function correctly more than your minds projection of what is fair for animals, it's part of life. Child birth is painful for a woman but it's part of life, it's human biology, science. Besides, I don't stress what people judge me for, God's judgment is all that matters. So the similar to communist cult type diet with all it's restrictions and convictions, countless supplements to make up, not for me thank you.
