I've had this knife for 6-7 years, an absolutely fantastic knife, i have the scandi carbon version with big oak scales. It has to be the most comfortable knife to use. The Forrest knife is definitely a perfect description.
I found after using just a flat grind for couple months that I had better cut control . I think once your motor skills get used to the grind it can outperform a scandi. Its all about technique , and a convexed bevel on a full flat is an awesome feather grind.
That and unless the scandi knife is rather thin, it won't slice a potato. Literally just acts like a wedge and splits rather than slices. Not the best for food prep.
Thank you! 😁👍 Fully agree with you! Great knife for outdoor food prep👌. Also fun to make some really nice thin curls with during feathersticking. Just a great knife and one of the best handles on a knife🤘. We filmed an episode about another knife last week that may be interested for you in that case. This Sunday 14:00 swedish time it will be launched 😉
I prefer a scandi-vex which is a combination of the convexed edge and scandi grinds makes it absolutely amazing performance for most any task in the woods
Haha yeah my Lars Fält knife from Casström looks nowadays like a scandi vex. Been using and loving that knife a lot and it performs so well. When I noticed that the scandi grind became a scandi vex it was not a sorrow because like you say… works very very well!😁👍
The SFK No14 should be available now, I didn’t pre order one but I’m definitely going to get one in Scandi. I’ve got the No10 in full flat and a Lars, I wanted the No10 more for food prep than working wood so the full flat made more sense.
Remember to check the handle when u get your casstrøm. Mine came with a gap between the steel and wood scales. Returned it no problem but it ruines my casstrøm experience.
love the review. I have the no 10 in Sleipner (scandi) and love it. the blade is 4 mm thick. it's a put it in your pants, go everywhere, do everything knife
Can someone please explain what's the purpose of a 4mm thick flat grind? It doesn't excel either in food prep because of thickness, or in woodwork because of its blade design that doesn't bite/split. So who is it for? Full tang flat grind looks like marketing to me. Finnish puukko or any other scandi is the way to go. For food prep you don't want more than 2mm thickness otherwise it will split the food instead of slicing. Does it make sense to grab a small axe and a flat grind knife (even some small kitchen ones) just for food prep that's all?
Good question! We agree on many points and we guess the no 10 flatgrind is main purpose is general use and hunting knife. For food prep it would have been better if the blade was higher if they want to keep the 4mm. We noticed that the frej and fox river II LT are great food preppers with the same and or thicker spine. Hight does a lot even if we compare now long convex with flatgrind. Bit unsure if that will hold for high flatgrind actually.
Fy fan.
Keep on making feathers😁💪
I appreciate your video, thank you! You came to the conclusion that the scandi grind was better. I agree when it comes to woodworking. But there is more to camp life, such as cutting cords, opening packages and, most importantly, cooking. That's where the flat grind shines in my opinion. In any case, the SFK (No 10) is a great knife, no matter in which variant.
Hi! We both think that the Casström nr 10 flatgrind will serve your wishes. It is a great knife to take with you for hunting and fishing and it performs quite well doing woodcraft. Hope this helps😁👍 good luck!
I guess that would be the Woodsman right now. Like that it is small, compact knife and that it has a quite a thick blade with scandi grind. It gives also a lot of control when bushcrafting because of the blade length.
Guys, what Ferro rods did you use here please? Also how the Casstrom No.10, compares to an LT Wright GNS, Genesis or the Bushcraft black from Morakniv? I only care about how they compare in feathersticking or in general performance, which would you pick from them, for feathersticking , and of course, don't forget the ferro rod name please??
Hi! We used the Camp Buddy "Bamboo" - Fire Steel XXL. Great ferro rod! Though question regarding the comparison… we have not build our collection that big that all those knives are included. LT wright illuminous 5 impressed us so can imagine those other LT wright knives do a awesome job as well.
Do you guys like the Lars Falt better than the Forester? I want to buy one of their blanks either the #10 or Lars Falt and was wondering your opinion. I like the handle on both knives but ive heard the #10 is very comfortable. I love building my own handle scales saves me a ton of money.
Hi, thx for your video. Made me kind of change my mind. Question. Why don't you put the handle not closer to the wood when batoning. Gives you more space on the blade to hamer.
Thanks for your comment! You watched the episode in great detail😁👍. Have not thought about it. Goes naturally. Guess we automatically readjust when it gives too little effect
I would say that the Lars Fält and NO.10 has quite similar diameter of the grip. Have you looked into LT Wright knives? They have a great handle and it is much thicker.
Hei gutter, takk for en flott test. Enig angående scandi grind, har en woodsman selv. Kan ta resten på engelsk, have you tried the casstrøm lock back folder? A review on that would be great! Keep up the good work 😀
Tjenare! Varsågod och tack att du har kollat vår YT channel😁👍. Woodsman is a nice knife💪. We have not tested the lock back folder but only talked out it. I saw it won even a price for good collab design or something. Guess at some point we will add that one to the collection. When that happens a review will definitely be made😁. Trevlig helg!
Would you rate this a better knife than the Lars Falt knife? I really had my eye on this one, the handle was the thing that peaked my interest, but i went with the larger blade on the Lars Falt, i'm wondering if i made the right choice, as i thought the no 10 was only a 3.75 inch blade.
Hi! No, personally I would rate the Lars Fält better. Think you made the right choice 😁👍. The handle of the no 10 is fantastic but in general we like the Lars Fält better. Great bushcraft knife for the activities we do in nature. Cheers!
Hey guys, Great video! Very helpful! Thank you very much! I would like to get a Casström No 10. I'm not sure about the steel yet. They changed the K720-steel to the Sleipner-steel in their production, so I can choose between 14C28N and Sleipner. What do you guys think about the Sleipner steel in combination with this knife?! Which steel would you recommend?
Hey! Great to hear that you find it a useful video! Thanks! Okay good question. We would have chosen sleipner steel for the scandi no.10 because it is easy to sharpen very sharp and hard. For the flatgrind we would have chosen the 14c28n steel because that one will be used during fishing and outdoor cooking adventures. Hope that helps! Take care
@@westcoastbushcrafters Thank you very much for your answer! I guess i'll give the Sleipner Scandi a try. Honestly, I never used a knife with Sleipner-steel, and didnt find many reviews about it either. Some people compare it to D2, which I dont like too much, compared to 14C28N. Thanks again! That and unless the scandi knife is rather thin, it won't slice a potato. Literally just acts like a wedge and splits rather than slices. Not the best for food prep.

That is fantastic! We agree with you. Great blade and handle design.
