So glad this channel promoted this mod! This video prompted a huge deep dive for me - I ended up playing through all three original games, plenty of FMs, including Thief 2X, Death's Cold Embrace, Seven SIsters, the Rocksbourg trilogy and Godbreaker, all in preparation for The Black Parade. Having gone through all of that, I genuinely would recommend people at least play the first two games all the way through _before_ playing TBP. This campaign is an absolute, genuine masterpiece of Thief level design and atmosphere, with all the intricacies you could ever hope for in this gameplay style present, mastered and sharpened to the highest degree. As a result of all this indulgent excellence, however, I think any fresh-faced newcomer would be utterly overwhelmed, confused and frustrated by the sheer scale and complexity of it all. I always love to see Thief Fan Missions represented, there are a ton of extremely high quality levels, I'm like 3 levels into this one and it's fantastic, always love to see Lady Rowena represented after her passing, she was a sublime map maker
You know smth is gonna be good when Mandalore resurrects the Mod Spotlight series to talk about it. Seriously though would love to see you cover more mods on games.
I'm currently at Mission 5 and maybe it's because I had the brilliant idea of playing it at night, but I was soooo on edge throughout the whole thing. Also I love a little moment I had during Mission 4, the "Bonehoard" one described in the video: while exploring the tomb I kept thinking: "The layout here strangely reminds me more of Dark Souls catacombs than the Bonehoard" and lo and behold... someone in the dev team probably thought the same thing.
I see what you mean, I kept forgetting this was a mod during the video and just assumed this was another of the series. There are plenty of mods that can add more to your game, but to get a mod that is its own game is such an amazing feat. Incredible work and hats off to the mod team!
Just wanna say, I watched a few minutes of your video on Stasis: Bone Totem and decided to start playing it. I'm a COD kiddy and this is my first true adventure game, and boy am I enjoying this. Thanks for talking about it I wouldn't have given it a shot otherwise.
thank you so much for showing the mod off and choosing not so spoil a single thing. i cant wait to load up dark parade today and dive back into modded thief
Love the fact that every good thief game video presented in this channel kicks in with assassins's track. Even though i loved the third installment for introducing me to the series anyway. Love your work.
I've never even played Thief, but i love seeing projects like this. Just a bunch of dedicated fans pooling their resources to contribute to something they genuinely love. Honestly, there are alot of developers that could take a lesson from this. Congrats to all those who worked on this mod.
The "Courage the Cowardly Dog" Katz theme playing in the background unlocked childhood memories. Haven't heard that theme in years. Great choice. Music aside, fantastic videos as always.
I had been intrigued by the Thief games ever since I was a kid, but with this video, I was compelled to finally play them. I beat Thief: Dark Project the other day and am going through Thief 2: the Metal Age. Intend to play the whole trilogy first in order to fully appreciate this mod.
Even then you won't be able to fully appreciate the mod, because it references other FMs as often as it does the official games. Its such a delight to see how some levels in TBP are in conversation with other older FMs. For years people have been wanting a 4th Rocksbourg FM, and I would say Mission 6 (Kept Away From View ) is exactly that. Mission 8 (Jaws of Darkness) is a continuation of Into the Odd's design philosophy (itself inspired by sperry's classic Shadow of a Doubt campaign). And peppered throughout all missions in the readables there are so many nods and other references to older FMs. I would say the best parts of TBP's story and world building is exactly in these readables, and not in the way it connects to the official games.
@@Wind_Falcon Indeed, having played hundreds of fan missions before TBP, including forgotten classics from the early 2000s, and then seeing all those references was so rewarding!
Would come home from school, block up my window to deny all light and dive into the world of Garret. My fav PC game of all time. The dark project. Even my name Dark Genix was birthed from this game.
The Thief fan mission community has one of the absolute highest standards of any modding/fan mission community out there. It's absolutely crazy what some of them put out. I love Thief 1 and 2 so much and I love the mission design in those games, but the modders have improved SO MUCH on what Looking Glass put out over 2 decades ago. It's genuinely incredible. It reminds me a lot of the people behind Tamriel Rebuilt are doing. They're building on the foundations laid by the original developers, but have refined the art so, so much. And this is all on top of the extreme fragility of the engine and the miserable experience that is using DromEd. (And thank god for NewDark as well!)
Think the series being dead is a lot of why, ironically enough. If you ever want to play polished new content, you'd better work your sleeves up and start figuring out how to make it, because you never will otherwise. Warcraft 3 modders are in a similar situation since, like Thief, it's an entirely dead series (we don't acknowledge Reforged just the same as not acknowledging the Thief reboot), and many of its mods are also near developer quality. I'd say another factor is just how friendly the devs are to modding though. The other commonality between these two very different games is that they were practically built from the ground up with facilitating fanmade content in mind.
I remember when Thief: The Dark Project released the downloadable demo in 90's. My brother and I downloaded the 55MB demo and had my dad's HP Pentium + AOL dial up going while we went to Church. Ah the days...
10:17 You're not wrong. My favorite realization when going through the 2nd level is that it's the same manor where the Constantine hiring Garrett cutscene takes place in the first game. In the sitting room on the second floor, you can find that weird clock on the fireplace and the hanging man window above it (seen in 9:20). Also, in a hidden cellar behind the bar, you can find the plant wine that Constantine offers Garret as well. While references aren't what make something great, the way Black Parade put this one in without any fanfare made it so cool to discover.
This makes sense to me and loved seeing those details! Always wondered why Garrett would walk into the same house he just robbed to meet with his commissioner - it never occurred to me Constantine invited him to another house!
I love mods getting more coverage! Have you tried Freelancer before? Another great 2003 game that's still being worked on by several dedicated communities.
@exhausted4398 Yeah, there's a few different communities. The biggest one is Discovery which still has a big online multiplayer server, but there's also Crossfire for a single player experience. A bunch of them are on ModDB. I don't think I can put links here, but search for the video "Discovery Freelancer battle for Freeport 9" for an example of an event that happened last weekend.
Lol dude, there is a GIGANTIC mod for freelancer that turns it into proper sandbox. On top of that it adds like whole story chapter after you finish initial storyline. ITs like a proper overhaul 1.5@@exhausted4398
I’m blown away by the texture quality. How there’s a high level of detail while still following the fidelity of the 90s and early 2000s eras of 1st-person PC gaming has my jaw dropped and my wig flying out the window. I don’t own any high-graphical-fidelity games that have released after 2016 due to aging hardware, so when amazing “old guard” communities for my favorite games: Thief, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, Rome Total War 2005, and Daggerfall Unity are still working on and publish content, I get so, SO overjoyed!!!
Mother of god. It's... beautiful. I loved the Thief games so much as a kid that I wanted to become a burglar when I grew up. I learned to actually pick locks off the internet, and would constantly break into locked rooms for fun. (I didn't steal anything, unless you count popsicles.) I damn near got caught a few times, but the games trained me well, and I avoided getting in serious trouble by ducking into a dark corner or side room and keeping absolutely silent, once for 15 minutes. None of the adults ever noticed me. So, yeah, I know exactly what I'm spending winter break on.
I think this is a very lovely way to use your platform as a big videogame reviewer. Mods often go underappreciated as far as the wider public goes, so showcasing incredible talent like these creatives to hundreds of thousands of people is a really cool thing to do. Hope these people are continually able to work on passion projects like this, the enthousiasm and skill is on clear display here.
THIS is the stuff I absolutely ADORE about the communities of old games. Seeing massive passion projects that take full advantage of modern hardware to make absolutely BONKERS stuff for games without changing their core identities or looks blow me away every time. If you're into Quake any and haven't already, I super recommend looking into Quake: Arcane Dimensions. It doesn't have a story like this project does but its some of THE BEST tweaks and Quake levels I've ever played. Particularly the map: Tears of the false god. Stuff like this is what makes me love games like DUSK and Amid Evil that capture these feels with all modern tech, and again projects like QAD and Black Parade that take a game and revamp it with hardware that couldn't even be dreamed of when they came out. Its so fuckin' cool.
one of my favorite mandalore bits is the replacement of ads with whatever gets slapped together in photoshop. thank you for averting my eyes from the horror of looking at ads
Unfortunately the Thief fan community has slowly been shrinking as the years go by, even though some of the best output in terms of quality FMs has been in recent years. Though we are way past the times of 100+ fan mission releases an year like in 2006, or even 50+ in 2013.
I was given the honor of betatesting this absolute behemoth, and all I can say to my fellow Thief fans is: go play it if you want to experience Thief as if it was the first time
It's good to see Thief is being kept alive with these mods that serve as stand-alone game basically. Despite it being on a 20+ year old engine I'd much prefer this than most current-day AAA games. I'll definitely give The Black Parade a play soon.
Please, please cover more mods, I know the mod spotlight series died so quickly for a reason, but I just love your mod reviews, they're very refreshing compared to everything else out there.
@@DragonMan-di9xv or triple A dont want or respects passion anymore so some games can fail the test of time which is the hardest of test unless they are in for the money
@@DragonMan-di9xv It's not that at all. It's that hiring hundreds, often thousands, of employees dilutes their ability to contribute. They need to all work on the same project now, so you can't just have one guy making inspirational kneejerk additions. Expertise is punished, and simplicity is rewarded - because *everyone* (including the people that shouldn't have been hired) needs to be able to keep up on the same project. It's why talented team leads are so important.
@@DragonMan-di9xv That's a part of it, although while I hate to sound pretentious- bigger teams really do lose a lot of the "soul" that you can feel in a lot of older games and indie games.
It's really just a given when there are so many mods being made out there, of course some are going to be exceptional. It's not like there aren't modern AAA games with great atmosphere, don't really see why there's a need to pretend it's some sort of either/or situation.

Dark Mods haneling of sound is terrible, which is the main feature of Thief, there are better alternatives.
i am loving black parade so much. it's incredible that these guys did all this for free
Damn, this mod looks amazing! It fills my heart knowing there's a dedicated group of old Thief fans like myself making love letters to this legendary trilogy. The scale of the maps is unreal and I wanna get lost in them snagging loot. Can't wait to play this!
I loved working on this and it makes me super happy to know that some people get just as much enjoyment out of it while plaiying it.

Thank you for all the content you make 🎉
Bro I have a friend who literally did the same thing!
On Twitter he indicated that we'll certainly be getting more mod coverage.
I hope the mod sparks a new wave of interest in the games and setting.
I love the thief video series, the game is two decades old but it is one of the most creative and fun retro games you can play.
It is one of the most creative and fun GAMES you can play, period.
I still play it regularly now
it means so much to me that this is getting as much support as it is, just seeing thief have this kind of life and attention again feels amazing
This mod is terrifying on how much there is in just a single level.
you know Soulforge takes forever to finish? This mod does that for all missions and it's amazing for it
The production value of this mod looks astonishing as well as art direction. I will replay first two games just to understand this one.

25 years of playing as Garrett the master thief, cheers to another 25 years! The best stealth first-person PC game ever made.🙌
What the fuck, I was rewatching your entire thief series just last night…
I was just watching your Thief videos the other day. Never played the games but love your breakdowns of them.
I just played the first mission and it was amazing! Huge props to the team who put this together, it's incredible
I've never even played Thief, but i love seeing projects like this. Just a bunch of dedicated fans pooling their resources to contribute to something they genuinely love. Honestly, there are alot of developers that could take a lesson from this. Congrats to all those who worked on this mod.
Great video, I am so happy you reviewed a thief mod. I hope you review Thief 2x too one day!
The "Courage the Cowardly Dog" Katz theme playing in the background unlocked childhood memories. Haven't heard that theme in years. Great choice. Music aside, fantastic videos as always.
Just completed it and...just wow. What a goddam rollercoaster. Every mission is an universe.

Love your videos about mods. Gives the community a chance to shine.
We are getting every piece of gold with this one🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥
There's a modding community for freelancer?
I have but it's been years since I've caught up with the mods especially. I think the last one I played was /v/lancer.
Good enough game, but being abandonware hurts it so badly.
For decades I carefully avoided playing Thief games, but now you sold it to me
Mother of god. It's...
They for sure knew you were there lol at least once
Alkaline for quake is pretty neat as well.
Or Death Wish for Blood!
one of my favorite mandalore bits is the replacement of ads with whatever gets slapped together in photoshop. thank you for averting my eyes from the horror of looking at ads
Welcome to the Black Parade
Thief fanmissions are a culture all their own. I love that communities like this can grow.
Unfortunately the Thief fan community has slowly been shrinking as the years go by, even though some of the best output in terms of quality FMs has been in recent years. Though we are way past the times of 100+ fan mission releases an year like in 2006, or even 50+ in 2013.
And yet again, the Thief community proves they are some of the most dedicated fans out there
I was given the honor of betatesting this absolute behemoth, and all I can say to my fellow Thief fans is: go play it if you want to experience Thief as if it was the first time
It's good to see Thief is being kept alive with these mods that serve as stand-alone game basically. Despite it being on a 20+ year old engine I'd much prefer this than most current-day AAA games. I'll definitely give The Black Parade a play soon.
Finally got around to installing it. Have played 5 minutes and already 10/10 happy with it.
This review was out fast! The mod looks awesome, everytime i replay the original trilogy, i alway play T2X as well. Looks like this one's a winner too
Glad you made a video on this, they deserve all the attention they can get!
Katz’s theme fits so well with Thief. Excellent choice of backing music.
Please, please cover more mods, I know the mod spotlight series died so quickly for a reason, but I just love your mod reviews, they're very refreshing compared to everything else out there.
What was the reason ? I'm curious
Holy crap this looks insane!
The sound design is absurdly good!
These guys understand that Thief is the best survival horror game. 💚
This mod looks delightful! I hope the team is quite proud of their hard work and dedication! Regardless I know what I’ll be doing tonight 😂
I can almost hear the Piano every time Mandalore says: "The black parade"
Game Awards 2023 are gonna miss this absolute gem
I love the still paintings in Thief. They've always been top-notch. It's cool they managed to keep the art style on track.
imagine an old game with modern mod having more atmosphere then triple A games
@@UnKnownv5 Shut up.
Rewatched all your theif videos last night and I get this treat today. Couldn't be happier
Damn I've been playing this mod, too. Probably some of the best if not the best Thief maps I've ever seen.
Thank you so much for this, looks like my Christmas is sorted .. and its free lol, Im actually happy to donate for this.
Hey. Can't remember if I've told you about this mod before. So going to say it again. There is a fantastic Doom mod called Splatterhouse 3D. It's a recreation of all the 2D Splatterhouse games and its very well done. I think you'd enjoy it.
I did not know anything about this. This is one heck of a surprise!
