I called the installer of my solar system and after a quick troubleshooting over the phone, which basically was turning the switch toggle between on1, on2 and off, he told me most likely I needed to replace the actuator or control. The fee for actuator replacement was $340 plus a travel fee of $3/mile. I removed the cover and noticed one switch terminal was slightly bent. After straightening out the terminal, presto the actuator started working. Warm water started entering the pool. You saved me well over $400 today. If the switches fail one day, at least now I know how to replace them.. Thanks so much for your video boss!!
I don't normally comment on videos - but this has fixed my parents pool solar heating. The actuator was not turning...turns out the switch was not connected properly. Didn't even have to replace - thanks to your video I managed to fix it all. Saved me hundreds of dollars for replacement part and install for parts plus install (and call out fee)! Thank you sooooo much!
I could not believe this would work. So before ordering switches I opened up the valve actuator to check it out and fiddled around with the connections to the switches and, presto, the one that had failed started working again. So the spade connector was kind of loose and tightening with pointy pliers did the job. Fast forward to yesterday, they the switch failed again, found this video for a refresher, got myself a couple of switches mailed order (next day, $7.00/pair on amazon, ready to use, specific for this), installed in 2 min, and valve is working again. This is an amazing "little secret". THANKS!
My actuator stopped working and my local pool company would only replace the whole unit. They were going to charge about $250. I purchased the switch and it worked. Thank you so much for this video!
Note to viewers - the switch might not be the whole problem. I have replaced my switches a few times over the years - I just replace them all every few years. What I have noticed is that the spade connector can be kind of loose and loses its connection. I just replaced 6 today and after replacement tested all of them and they are working fine. A new switch with a faulty connection will fail again, so I used some tiny needle nose pliers to crimp the female end of the spade connector to make a tight fit electrically. I am confident this will extend the length of time between switch replacements.
Tom- your comment about a loose spade connection solved my problem. Thanks for chiming in. Of course, I also ordered a bunch of these limit switches too, because it sounds like they will fail eventually.
Many thanks, Robert. Brilliant video. I just came across it today. I am sick of pool companies charging hundreds of dollars for simple fixes. Keep it up!
This post just saved me $200. In my case, the limit switch was not the problem, rather the post that secures the handle was binding against the housing. By taking the handle and the housing off as noted in this video, I was able to clean and lubricate the post and now everything works. Thank you!
mine wasnt working, but it was just a bit stiff, took the top off, and it immediately started working. so free fix, thanks for the video of disassembly, I knew it could be opened without breaking anything as a result!
Robert. Can't thank you enough for this video. Was clueless as to why my spa mode flowed into the pool as spillway. Did just as you said. Changed out the switches for $1.50 total and works fine now. Thanks.
My pool guy (who we really like and trust) was going to charge we $275 (labor included) to replace this valve. I watched the video twice, ordered the parts and after a quick 5 minutes of work I replaced both micro switches and my valve is working again! I spent $7 on a 10 pack of valves, saved $268 and can do the repair 4 more times!
Just finished my repair on my hot tub actuator. Bought two switches from the Evil Bezos for $14. Five minute repair and works like new, and $325 stayed in my pocket. Thanks for your helpful video!
Thank you for your video. I thaught my actuator was "Kaput" but I follow the instruction on the video and just by checking and moving the connectors, I was able to reactivate the actuator movement. The problem was a bad connexion at both sides because of corrosion.
Awesome!!! Thank you so much! I just bought a house with a pool and, of course, the first time we turned on the spa, the whole thing emptied. My husband was so proud when I diagnosed the problem and fixed it for a few bucks!!! I even adjusted the positioning of the valve. Proud mama here. Thanks!
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this! My pool company quoted me $551.28 to replace the two actuators and, following your video, they now work perfectly for just over $8 (the switches came in a package of ten.)
Watched the video, got the switches from Uncle Jeff Bezos ( 4 for $14.99), took about 15 minutes to change out the switches and I was in business. Saved about $400 from the estimate to replace the entire assembly. God, I love TH-cam how-to videos! Many thanks!
I first thought my issue was with the programing but found out one of the automated valves wasn't working (rule 1, check mechanicals first). Popped valve top and indeed the limit switches were wonky. Just finished replacing both switches after amazon order arrived this morning and it works great. Thanks so for such a great and informative vid.
just wanted make sure i drop by to give you a big THANK YOU! i was just about the drop $130 on a new valve actuator, but then found your video and changed only the limit switch and everything is working!!
Thank you for taking the time to document this amazing fix! My switches will be delivered tomorrow and I was able to manually return the valve to the correct position in the interim in less than 10 minutes. It's 103 degrees today, so having a working pool is important.
Thank you so much for this video. I had already replaced an actuator a few years ago. The other one failed this week. With your help ( and links) i diagnosed a failed limit switch. This was super helpful.
Thank you for posting this WITH the amazon part number link! I don't mind doing stuff like this on my own but I never know how to properly match parts like this. Well done sir!
Great Video!!!! I was about to order actuator from Amszon then stumbled across this video. Found one of the limit switches problematic. I went one step ahead and fixed the limit switch myself. It is a delicate part. Resistance across normally closed leads were high, in the order of few Kilo Ohms. I took the contacts out and sanded and put them back, then the resistance became close to zero. And valve started working. Anyway I will get new limit switches and keep them in backup.
Thanks so much Robert! I followed this and fixed an actuator that wasn’t working. Total time about 10 minutes, and that included repositioning the ring that stops the actuator in the open position (wasn’t fully open when the actuator stopped). Now it’s perfect! Saved me a lot of money and I know how to do it again if the other actuators fail. Awesome!
Thank you. Mine was not the dip switch, as the pool cleaner accidentally hit the toggle switch to the middle position. Needs to be in the lower position for mine and now works. Thanks!
Robert, hope there's a lot of good karma coming your way. Just crimping one of the connections appears to have fixed our problem. Will be ordering some limit switches to have on hand. (side note: wasn't sure what power was going to these switches, but seeing you handle them gave me some idea it wasn't 120v).
Excellent video. I had already taken the actuator apart and was looking for a source for the switches. This video explained everything in great detail and provided me a great link for purchasing.
Thanks Robert.... my American Home Shield warranty insurance doesn't cover any automation equipment, including a valve actuator, just the valve itself. So my pool repair service guy suggested ordering a new actuator online and installing it myself, if I felt comfortable with that. Then I saw your video and have now ordered the limit switches (10 for $6.99), which I'm pretty sure will fix the problem. Thank you!
Robert, great instructional video. Valve now turns as it should. HOWEVER, the water from the hot tub is still draining, very slowly, back into the pool. Any suggestions. Thanks!
@@g92069 It's late for this but the problem is either (1) the diverter valve assembly in the valve directly under the motor or (2) the check valve on the spa.

Thanks, this fixed my problem! Replaced both switches. One quick question. Does it matter how you connect the wires to the posts? I tried to keep top to bottom positions clear, but started changing them to try to get the handle to stop where I wanted, since after reattaching the handle, the valve was opening and closing 90 degrees off from before. Figured I might have reattached the handle in the wrong position, and was finally able to adjust the handle to match the waterflow. Seems to work despite the cross wiring possibility.
I find limit switches on Amazon however I need lever arm too - Where can I purchase the lever arms for a reasonable price - the pool stores offer however overpriced
Thanks for the great video. I end up with taking out the switch on the right-hand side (lower) and got it to turn to the middle, but back the switch and all is now working.
Great video. Any idea where you can buy the "nubs" as you called them? One of mine is cracked and I'd hate to have to buy an entire new valve just to replace that.

No. My valve would not turn manually either. I read somewhere that this type does not turn manually. Only way to get manual operation is to remove the whole actuator.
@@thehookupextras I tried touching the wires on the limit switch and no movement. I even tried replacing the switches anyways - no luck. Any suggestinos?
I used a multimeter to check for voltage before touching anything. With the toggle switch in the off (center) position, there is no voltage across the switch leads.
Thanks for sharing this video and appreciate all the additional feedback from others. I'm having trouble finding these microswitches online. Any suggestions? Tried Amazon and they don't have the two prong for the part# SS-5-2T. Other inform on microswitch shows 5A125VAC. Can these be purchased at local pool stores or only online. 5A125VAC is fine, these are 24VDC systems running on very low current, so it does not exceed the ratings for those switches. AmazonUS: amzn.to/2WDD6Dq AmazonUK: amzn.to/33QZriN
Thanks, the link that you provided is for a Micro Switch with 3 Pins. My switch now only has two prongs. Does it matter if I don't use all three? Really appreciate the help!

if the manual switch won't move it, does that mean the whole actuator needs to be replaced?
Not necessarily. Did you check to see if the valve will move if you touch the wires on the limit switch together?
So there's no issue with not turning off power before doing this work?
I suppose it's always a good idea, but these are low voltage actuators.
Nope... I wondered the same left it on so I could test it.
I used a multimeter to check for voltage before touching anything. With the toggle switch in the off (center) position, there is no voltage across the switch leads.
will these work in a Jandy Valve?
I've never taken apart a Jandy valve, but I would bet they work the same way.
I'm wondering the same thing. Did this work on your Jandy valve?

Thanks for sharing this video and appreciate all the additional feedback from others. I'm having trouble finding these microswitches online. Any suggestions? Tried Amazon and they don't have the two prong for the part# SS-5-2T. Other inform on microswitch shows 5A125VAC. Can these be purchased at local pool stores or only online. Any help would be appreciated! -
5A125VAC is fine, these are 24VDC systems running on very low current, so it does not exceed the ratings for those switches.

Thanks, the link that you provided is for a Micro Switch with 3 Pins. My switch now only has two prongs. Does it matter if I don't use all three? Really appreciate the help!
@@richbeitter9158 One of the pins will be "normally open", the other will be "normally closed". The 3 pin will work, just put the wires in the same position that they were on the old one.
