This song is about Joan of Arc being burned at the stake, and her presumed lover Gilles de Rais going insane, and letting his heart turn evil.
Gilles de Rais, descends into madness after her execution. He becomes twisted, committing countless crimes. The title, “The Death of Love,” alludes to the loss of their bond
The references to Joan’s bravery, and Gilles’ crimes create a dark and enigmatic atmosphere. These historical elements intertwine with the overall theme of love and its complexities, adding a touch of macabre beauty to the song.
Gilles de Rais was one of Joan of Arc's captains. The song describes Gilles and Joan as she is led off to be burned at the stake. Joan says (the female voice) "Where will you be when God is glorifying?
There we will be between the dead and dying
Where will you be my darling??"
"The Death of Love" speaks to Joan and Gilles alleged romantic involvement. When Joan is executed. Gilles in a sense becomes mad and thus loses his capacity for love, making him the person that he later becomes.
