Working day in and day out as a heavy industrial rigger we only used engineers for the big lifts and that would be anything over 100,000 pounds. Stay thirsty my friend.
You're correct. Placing your hoisting equipment directly over the center of gravity before lifting is critical. This prevents the load from swinging as it's lifted. There are few exceptions where placing the rigging and hoisting equipment offset from the center of gravity is preferred, but use these procedures with extreme caution.
